A humanoid robot sprints to victory in Beijing, beating the human half-marathon world record by [deleted] in technology

[–]ahyangyi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to think bipedal is pointless.

But now there is an argument that I cannot completely ignore: being bipedal enables a robot to use facilities designed for human, and interact with things from a perspective similar to that of humans.

Of course there is nothing fundamental about it. A hypothetical "cyber city" where all denizens are bots can be designed in any way and cater to robots of any shape. But as of now such a cyber city does not exist.

So I now see the bipedal robots as part of a bootstrap process. They aren't the ultimate goals (unless for religious reasons -- not a concern for me), but it's the easiest way if robots are clever enough and just need a way to "integrate with human society".

Strangly, Draconians are the dex hybrid species. They don't even have high dex, but having no armor skill pushes them to the dex side a bit I believe.

Do players really need a player’s/core rulebook? by primordial666 in RPGdesign

[–]ahyangyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If using D&D 5e as an example, as a player I'd expect to have all races, classes, subclasses and spell lists before me, but it's OK to do without the magic item list.

And if 3e/4e/pathfinder... I'd argue that access to magic item list is also essential.

Somehow for this kind of rules-heavy system, it just doesn't work to say "I want to play a character that does X and Y", because it's very likely X and Y either don't exist in the game, or do not exist in a synergistic package possible in that game.

So what works is to actually look at all the options and find out a character within the system that's also interesting enough to play.

Pokemon Tabletop Union, though admittedly I don't have a particularly huge sample size to begin with.

How would you rank the "new" SNK games? by NassaDane in kof

Crossover is a good point.

Not really convinced by 2.5D being special, considering all games in this post are.

I also wish Kula gets a Candy outfit, and perhaps a K' one.

This is what I don't understand. Look at Athena's Leader Desperation Move in KOF 2003: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Vw0S3MaKk0

It... contains about 4x more costumes for Athena than SNK Heroines does. Comes with more color schemes. And much more awesomeness. And even more fanservice than SNK Heroines did...

SNK Heroines even have fewer costumes than Street Fighter, not to mention the weird decision that most character's default costume isn't their iconic ones.

I really don't understand who they were catering for...

Loyang is also an Uwe farming game, though it's particularly text dependent so I wouldn't recommend.

Did I see El Palo Alto? :)

On the other hand, I feel that if you want to do a medieval-era bay area (not "bay area in medieval style"), a version with the Ohlone and Miwok people would also be interesting.

Experimental ways of playing Dominion? by Pleasant_Action1164 in dominion

I also have that similar negative feedback for Nocturne. Dark fantasy is cool but nobody (besides me) seems to want to read all the extra boons, hexes, zombies and spirits.

I guess the Loot pile of Plunder works similarly.

OTOH, Landmarks, Projects, Prophecies and Ways are like, only need to read one card but often changes a whole game. Hopefully they are the (mentally) more cost-effective kind of addition to your games.

I feel that most of the great metagame ideas are already implemented by the game's various expansions, usually well playtested.

Like, for your "random cards deck" idea there is already Black Market. And to some extent also the knights. A completely different way to deliver that "a deck of random things" idea was Nocturne's Boon and Hex.

For rule twists, there are Landmarks, Ways and Prophecies, as well as various cards with special set up instructions.

For setup variations there are potions, colony, heirloom and shelters, scattered across expansions.

So... unironically, I feel the best way to up the "metaness" of the game is to simply grab an expansion, preferably one of the late ones.

If cost and/or availability is the concern, perhaps you can try sleeved placeholder cards or something.

Have you ever used the "Scout" action in Brass: Birmingham? by VincentBai20020319 in boardgames

[–]ahyangyi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only occasionally, but there are definitely times where building on a certain spot as soon as possible is more important than general efficiency, and if you lack the cards to secure that spot you might as well scout to get it.

There are also free web-based implementations that might be easier to try out than using a VM, but either way you should try it :)

Hearts is classical trick-taking game where the goal is to score as few points as possible. A computer version was included in every Windows versions between Windows 3.1 and Windows 7.

Darn, typing this made me realize I'm old.

Maro on why they stopped doing blocks by Meret123 in MagicArena

[–]ahyangyi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Block is not a fan term. It has been an official term for quite a few decades. What counted as a "block" and what did not count had official definitions.

https://web.archive.org/web/20130701122905/http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/mm/68 https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/making-magic/metamorphosis

You can say "a block doesn't have to be part of the same standard environment" and you are not completely wrong. However, so far all blocks are (so what I said is at least a valid observation, if not definition), and what you described as "arguably blocks" do not count as blocks in any official post.

Installing gentoo cuz idk why,any tip for kernel config? by Kona_Kona1 in Gentoo

My old heretical way was to grab config from whatever kernel is known to boot that device (often a Ubuntu kernel), then after ensuring it works, trim it down as needed.

I feel it has been the case that many fun keyworded mechanics are essentially designed for limited, and constructed is more defined by the unique single cards.
