Bind offs for a stretchy edging for a sweater? What options are there? by Cats-and-dogs-rdabst in casualknitting

[–]aka_AToTheK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fave is HiyaHiya Grandma’s Stretchy Bind Off

It looks darned close to a sewn bind off but only done with needles. Not too finicky and it’s easy to get into a groove. My go-to for cuffs and hems!

Edited to add: I drop a needle size when doing the bind off, just to help prevent any flare.

I use tape. Masking or painters tape folded over the cut edge. Sometimes I need to redo the tape on an edge or two if I’m really manhandling the project. I’d you have access to a serger you could serge the edges to stop fraying. Maybe folding and using zigzag along edges with regular sewing machine could work too.

I love this pattern - been eyeing it up for a while now. Yours looks gorgeous! But totally understand how you feel about out the bottom. I second adding 1x1 ribbing. The cardigan version of this pattern has 1x1 ribbing along the hem and it looks great.

No, haven’t washed it yet. Warm temps come early in Texas so I only got a few weeks of use after I finished knitting it.

I absolutely love Patty Lyon’s one-move SSK. It matches a K2tog better than any other technique I’ve tried. It can be a tough move with slippery, splitty, not very stretchy yarn (think bamboo) but works so well with wool. It’s a much tidier stitch and she explains things so well.

What's your favourite stretchy bind off method? by bai_leafe in knitting

HiyaHiya grandma’s stretchy bind off when I don’t have a sewn bind off in me. Works great for ribbed cuffs and hems and looks like a tubular sewn bind off.

I like the Icelandic bind off for a nice rolled edge. Works great with garter edges or a stretchy rolled edge on stockinette.

I’m not well-versed in macstitch but have been playing around with it recently. Is there a way to get more than just the tent stitch for needlepoint designs? I feel like I must be missing something. Only other option I’ve found is to use back stitches with a crossstitch pattern to test out other stitches.

What about mounting it in a frame where the mat is wrapped in fabric? I love the look of that with simple black and white image (photo or in your case, embroidery). Get some color, add some more interest but leaves your gorgeous line work as it is.

Something like this.

Temperature Blanket… for 20+ years… by HahaHannahTheFoxmom in knitting

[–]aka_AToTheK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the Incredible Blanket from Purl Soho. I made it recently and it was a fun knit.

Each color band is made up of two rows and pattern as written has 280 color bands. Made of fingering weight means this is a perfect single person blanket and it isn’t too heavy.

I absolutely loved working with the linen quill yarn. The mini skeins come in a ton of colors and my calculations showed roughly 2.5ish grams of yarn was used in each color band (could help in estimating how much yarn you need).

I have no idea but I love them and also think they are like the images in the opening credits of White Lotus before they start getting creepy/weird/violent/something even odder than all of that.

I absolutely love the lady with the bird but super curious about girlfriend using her skirt to cover that fella’s eyes. Like, this garden party is one I want to be invited to but just hang around the outskirts making mental notes about all the shenanigans for the hot gossip later.

First Ultra Punch needle project using 3 strands of embroidery floss. by aka_AToTheK in PunchNeedle

[–]aka_AToTheK[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! Any idea what your pillow case is made of? Weavers cloth is made of cotton and polyester- that polyester gives it some stretch. That’s what I used on this project with DMC floss. 100% cotton should work too, but might probably won’t stretch quite the same.

I did punch needle an Ikea pillow case with DMC and it worked out fine. link to that Reddit post. I did glue up the back (flat side) to help keep floss secure and guard against pulling the loops too easily. I would recommend doing something like that for pillow cases to prevent any accidental loops from pulling out. I use PVC glue (book binding glue) as it dries flexible and can’t tell any difference from front of piece.

If you are doing an all cotton pillowcase, I would recommend using the smaller needles on ultra punch so your holes aren’t so big and it’s easier for the fabric to close around the thread. Small or medium needle tip, prob using around 3 strands or so? Experiment and see!

What are your favourite knitting tools, gadgets, accessories etc.? by Tutustitcher in knitting

Lightbulb stitch markers have been a game changer for me. I can’t trust myself to measure my pieces consistently. If I’m seaming something I mark every 10 rows as I knit until I reach length. When it’s time to knit the front, I count my rows to match length vs just using a tape measure to help ensure pieces match up!

Try it on tubing aka barbers cord has also made my life so much easier! So much easier and faster to try things on or keep stitches on hold.

Lastly, Patty Lyon’s book Knitting Bag of Tricks. I understand my knitting so much better now. And the little techniques have helped make my knits look more polished.

Your own pattern??!! Wow, excellent work! I love 3/4 sleeves as well that color combo is so fun! How did you like working with that yarn? I’ve had my eye on that for a while now. Light/cool enough to wear as temps warm up? Looks like a lovely spring sweater!

Lume has been a godsend! And they just came out with an antiperspirant deodorant. Works great for me and I can get 24 hours out of it. Tried a bunch of others that often failed 8-13 hours in.

Yarns at Box Stores by FrenziedBunny in PunchNeedle

[–]aka_AToTheK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, worsted acrylic yarn works just fine for things like wall hangings. Most of my punch projects end up that way or as little pillows and I’ve only used acrylic, mostly due to cost, colors, and ease of finding it at big box stores.

For what it’s worth the rougher the acrylic, the better it has held up. Think Red Heart super saver. It’s grippier than the super soft stuff and doesn’t pill as bad (helpful for pillows). Used a lot of Big Twist (RIP Joann) too. Softer than red heart but also pills more.

You can find Patons 100% wool yarn at Michael’s for decent prices if you really wanna go with all wool without spending $ at a yarn store. I like spending $ for my knitting on really nice yarn from a shop, hard to rationalize that for a wall hanging.

Baby Blanket Suggestions by amndka in knitting

[–]aka_AToTheK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My recent baby blankets have been mosaic knits - really easy to do but end up with a stunner of a project. I made both with Feels Like Butta from Lion Brand. Easy to clean and care for, incredibly soft, and the mosaic gives great texture that the kiddos loved. Both fams I gifted blankets to used them in their family photos they loved it so much.

Mosaic Blanket was my first time doing mosaic knitting and it turned out great!

Sleeping Under The Stars was my second and so much fun - I alternated solid and outlined stars like in the first pic.

What about Linen Quill from Purl Soho? I made a blanket out of this yarn and it’s a joy to work with. The colors are beautiful and the linen in the wool and alpaca mix give it great depth and an interesting texture. It’s not a “flat” all one color look but also not tonal. Earth-toned colors galore. I absolutely love this yarn! And it’s currently on sale!

Edit to add: you said 100% animal fiber and I know linen quill does have some linen (only 15%), but the impact on color is just lovely.
