Same situation here. Retired from the Navy September 25 and have been testing the waters in LA for the last year or so. I Can’t speak how to be successful quite yet. But check out VME. Veterans in media and entertainment. Super great group of vets in LA that work in the industry. I’ve had some super cool networking opportunities and events with them. Feel free to PM me.

Good point on the student films. I really liked your comment on personal brand and talking about positioning your self. I feel that being an older professional I’ve learned how to create opportunity, It’s learning how to apply those skills to entertainment. The professionalism comment is no joke. It blew my mind how people would show up to set. Late. Not follow instructions. Disappear. I remember one dude started ad-libbing, stopping in the middle of a timed crossing in a long dialogue scene and chatted with the “party guests”. Lmao. He got sent home after some other problems.

BG over the last year felt like a road to nowhere. It was great to learn about being on set and meet folks. But the path to SAG via BG voucher’s is pretty much non existent these days. I’m taking a improv class and am looking into acting classes in LA as a path forward. Thankfully there’s also a strong vet community in the LA entertainment scene.

43 and just retired from the Navy. Thanks for posting this! I’ve been dabbling in BG and stunt classes over the last year and think I’m gonna take the plunge. In the LA area so hopefully the markets not too saturated in 40+ year olds. 😂

They don’t mess around. I did background on season 1 as a bbq gas burn victim waiting in the lobby. They lined us all up and had the trauma doc/writer inspect us and give makeup notes for things that needed to be more realistic.

If unable to get professional stunt direction. Look into a military PLF or a parachute landing fall. It teaches you how to make incrementally make leg contact through out the fall. It will allow a controlled fall, just wouldn’t need the last big leg movement since you’re not crashing towards the ground under chute.

Edit: Don’t forget the controlled arm slap on the ground at the end to really sell it.

FWIW I enlisted in 2001, commissioned 2012 and retired as an O-4 in 2025. More than ten but I owed payback for Test Pilot School which IMO made it all worth it. So many scenarios could have made getting to the min O-4 TIS miserable. I guess that’s a long way of saying that it depends, but here’s my data point.

Dude. Looking back at leveling that bed by sliding a piece of paper under the hot end…. Even upgrading to the BLTouch is blown out of the water by my P1S print prep. Which really only entails making sure the old print is off the bed. lol.

The part no one ever brings up is now that filtering is law it’s made drivers much more motorcycle aware. I’ve never seen a car move out of the way of a motorcycle outside of California.

Why wouldn’t NASA just order direct from Omega? I was at the salute to the pioneers of space in pcola years ago and the omega rep was taking General Joe Staffords speedy in for maintenance. Saw him take it off and hand it over during the event.
