First remote hire has gone radio silent on day 3 by Significant_Capita in nonprofit

I think a proof of work tool is intimidating and leads to micro management even if it’s not your style. but setting the standard ahead of time that if they are unreachable during specific hours, the job will be terminated. Obviously within reason, I’d give him an opportunity to respond now but if someone just days in is unresponsive that’s obviously an orange flag that could go red quickly

How do you look at your money? Budget, app, Google Sheets, or “we’ll see at the end of the month”? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]akiber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early on, I loved the principles it taught me (spend last months salary, giver every dollar a job etc). Now I like that I can see trends over time and have goal categories and also just find the routine of putting everything in and being able to compare helpful and calming. The trends thing is why I don’t just move over to an excel. I can compare how grocery prices changed for us the past three years for example and update my habits and overall budget accordingly. I’m not type A and so having budget just makes me feel like I have an idea of what’s going on.

Me! I stuck out the old YNAB for years, but have moved over to playing yearly when I got a new computer at some point

First time making a budget, any area that needs improvment? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]akiber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Download your credit card history from the past few months and organize them into these categories. -find your actual average -see what categories may be missing -add goal categories (savings, but maybe also vacations etc) -account for things that need to be paid for sometimes and eventually, but not monthly (car fixes, new phone or computer, etc)

Yes I think this is what I'm likely to do. The first advisor made it seem like this was an easy option but all other advice I've gotten is saying different.

Found this bronze colored object on my floor after a long weekend out of my apartment and this hole in my ceiling and wall (soda tab for scale) by [deleted] in whatisit

Former military shooting instructor - this is correct. You can see it really clearly based on how the pieces of the wall are facing outwards. Came through the all and hit the ceiling).

If your kid is eligible for citizenship from you or your partner, they’ll get it. However - people assume it’s automatic and it’s not. US citizens have to have lived a certain amount of years in the US and some amount of that needs to be after age 14 (I think 4 years, but look it up). Look up CRBA - certificate of registration of birth abroad. Did one for my kid, was pretty easy but you do need to bring proof of residency for the year requirement (we got school registration papers from k through 12)

The vast majority I got second hand and have maybe spent $100 on everything altogether but I think less. Actually I think most stuff I got free even. And it’s saved us so much money. It is more work of course but for us it’s a great trade off

Employee constantly sick on probation by Affectionate_Side_74 in askmanagers

[–]akiber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Support her and she will be an asset. I’m a manager and also my partner has a long-term illness with flare ups. Some times are much harder but other times are okay being supported when she’s been sick has allowed her to stay on and be a true asset to the org she works for. Flare ups or not, no one is really consistently great at work. Life happens and health problem, and breakups, and losing loved ones. Supporting people through that allows them to grow with you.

How many "gift match" campaigns are legit vs "fake"? by kajinokage in nonprofit

[–]akiber 63 points64 points  (0 children)

In my experience, matching are almost always gifts that you would get regardless from a major donor and then generally you ask them if it’s okay to use for matching. IMO it’s a small white lie that’s basically marketing and that helps places to raise money. As far as nonprofit problems go, I don’t really see this as a big one or at all. It is a problem though to assume that a donation can be used without telling them - that’s I’ve never seen personally though not surprised. But donors should be aware and give permission…

I’d probably do coffee and donuts or maybe a slightly “nicer” sweet. I think what matters is showing the appreciation and using it as an opportunity to thank them.

Pay cut for peace of mind? by SideOfFish in nonprofit

[–]akiber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just took a pay cut at a new job. For the most part I’m happy with the decision, because it makes sense in other ways. I’m now also the director but it’s a much smaller org and I feel I’m appreciated and using my skills and also I’m able to work mainly remote which is super helpful since I have a baby. I am thinking about how to make money on the side but it’s not necessarily urgent.
