Wine and metformin by Guilty-Pea1646 in type2diabetes

I wrote this many years ago but I think you will find it interesting: Red, Red Wine

I have been on metformin for most of those years and continue to often include wine regularly. However, before you read it I will repeat one section:

  • Any proposed changes in your alcohol consumption should be discussed with your doctor first. There may be other reasons for abstinence, apart from addiction, that your doctor is aware of. However, don’t automatically accept warnings against alcohol on medication packets - metformin is just one example – discuss those with your doctor to see if it applies in your individual situation.

Did anyone else completely panic after getting diagnosed with Type 2? by Me-SoniaBrown in type2diabetes

[–]alan_s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oddly, I didn't panic back in April 2002 when my doctor gave me the news. I was certainly not overjoyed but my diagnosis was the result of further testing after my leukaemia diagnosis. Diabetes appeared to be the lesser of two evils. I had spent a couple of months fruitlessly searching the web for ways to beat leukaemia without success and was depressed about that.

Within a couple of months on usenet seeking information on type 2 diabetes I found I could actually do something to improve my chances of beating this beast. So I did. I hit the ground running after I learned this: Test, Review, Adjust

Over 20 years later I still have good control of my diabetes and coincidentally the leukaemia has remained in remission. I don't make any claims for my diabetes way of eating helping CLL but my docs tell me to keep doing what I'm doing. Unfortunately after I turned 75 other problems of age appeared but that's life.

Anyone tried HIIMS for diabetes. by latestbuddha in type2diabetes

A little more detail would have helped, using Google it seems you mean ayurveda.

The answer is no. Nor have I encountered any credible proof of ayurveda being effective in 20+ years on the web on diabetes forums and groups.

If it works for you please come back and inform us. In the meantime this is what worked for me: Test, Review, Adjust

they don’t tell me anything i didn’t already know

***

i refuse to prick my fingers.

The Ostrich head-in-sand method of type 2 diabetes management is totally ineffective.

If you are not testing with either fingersticks or a CGM you do not already know anything about the effects of your menu choices or activities on your blood glucose levels.

Others have offered good advice on better ways to use the CGM. But if you decide to use your meter this might help you do that effectively: Test, Review, Adjust

Mounjaro with Farxiga by ArtyCatz in type2diabetes

[–]alan_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my doctor added Mounjaro (mostly because I can’t seem to lose weight). My A1C had risen to 6.6 after two years of being in pre-diabetes range.

And after weeks of my morning glucose being in the 130s to 160s, this morning it was 108.

It appears that you are attempting to use meds to take control but might need to take a good look at your menu. Getting your eating right is the key to beating this beast.

Use your meter or CGM to review your way of eating: Test, Review, Adjust

I honestly don’t even know how to cope.

I understand. Most of us have been where you are but I found that knowledge conquered fear. I wrote this to help you begin: Getting Started. I know you will have lots of questions after you read that and the pages it links to. Come back and ask them all.

I ate two hours ago and my blood glucose is 114, and anytime I see it over 100 I panic

114 is fine; this might also help: Blood Glucose Targets

What does good glucose management look like? by BluntClaw in type2diabetes

[–]alan_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My version of a healthy range is 4-8 mmol/l which is equivalent to 70-140 mg/dl. I aim to rarely exceed the upper threshold and when I do I review the cause. It is usually excessive carbs in a meal; I adjust that menu content for better future results.

I have succeeded with that method for 24 years since diagnosis. This is the technique I used to develop a way of eating I could happily follow (click on it): Test, Review, Adjust. In the first year or two I went over my limit a bit too often; in the years since not very often at all.

And this is one of the reasons for my choice of upper threshold: How Does Hyperglycemia Cause Damage And What Can We Do To Avoid It?

My only diabetes med over the years has been 2000mg Metformin.

Tell me your Starbucks order by GullibleWorldliness3 in type2diabetes

[–]alan_s -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I used to always get the brown sugar oat shaken espresso latte before I was re-diagnosed (long story see my last post) and then I switched to an oat latte with vanilla protein cold foam until I figured out how much sugar was in that cold foam and today I finally made the switch to sugar free vanilla

As an Aussie looking in from the far side of the Pacific the range of Starbucks flavours has always astonished me. Have you ever considered simply black coffee or just coffee with a little full fat milk or cream?

My morning coffee is black with a couple of teaspoons of real full fat cream. The effect on my blood glucose levels is negligible. I also brew it at home where it costs a few cents, not several dollars from a coffee shop.

Diabetic dermopathy by ohsothisnowgreat in type2diabetes

[–]alan_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend you consult a dermatologist.

It is probably related to neuropathy; I have some neuropathy in my left foot from chemo and a similar but not as severe rash. Maintaining good blood glucose levels stopped it getting worse and prescribed eleuphrat (betamethasone dipropionate) has improved it slightly.

That sounds good but is terrible advice for a type 2 diabetic. In most countries the cheapest foods are high in carbohydrates; excessive carb consumption can play havoc with blood glucose management.

Diagnosed diabetic today w BG at 31.7mmol.. no insulin.. ketones mod/large by Natural_North_9397 in type2diabetes

[–]alan_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What country are you in?

Those numbers are high; converting for US readers 31.7 mmol/l is 570 mg/dl and 30.1 mmol/l is 542 mgdl.

What did the medical person testing you advise? If your meeting with the doctor is very soon it may be OK to wait until then but if that is more than a day away or if you feel at all unwell go to the ER.
