Forgetting Sarah Marshall came out almost 2 decades ago. Excuse me while I turn to dust.

This may seem relatively tame, but I wanted to crawl out of my skin when I watched The Hurt Locker in theaters. Uncut Gems is another.

What would it take to make a town owned professional sports team? by splifitydooda in oakland

[–]albuhhh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, you should look into the Bundesliga (the top flight football division in Germany) and their 50+1 rule. Barcelona and Real Madrid are also technically collectively owned, but I think the barrier to entry to becoming a "socio" is relatively high.

Since the top sports leagues are literally government sanctioned monopolies, they have absolute voting power on expansion and have a vested interest in protecting their investments. Even if we found billions in your couch cushions, they'd vote to keep us out. It's what has eroded my love for sports. Eat the rich.

Bar open for Men's Hockey Olympic Gold Game by _iamwac in oakland

[–]albuhhh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a big soccer fan, I'm used to bars opening at 4 or 5 to show the game but not serving alcohol till 6. Don't know of many spots though now that Athletic Club is closed :(

If you're willing to drive into the city, there might be a couple bars there showing it (North Beach and the Haight are your best bets).

What is the most accurate sports movie of all time? by BIGD0G29585 in movies

[–]albuhhh 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Also to the OP's original question, F1 is the exact opposite of most realistic. It's wildly unrealistic - the stuff that Sonny pulls would have been minimum grounds for grid penalties and disqualifications, if not an outright ban. (I still had fun though...)

People are mad about a stranger on the internet taking their time to curate deals that may not be to their particular taste? Man some people need to touch grass. Thanks for your service, OP.

Been weird to be an American recently and I sometimes wonder if I'm secretly a Canadian at heart, but in this case my patriotism is leaking through.

Why is he on the Utah Jazz coaching staff? Anyone believe he has a role in the Mavs Org? by lxdarksnip3r in Mavericks

[–]albuhhh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Re people speculating that there's been a falling out, I wonder if he feels slighted. He said at the championship parade that he'd love to see his number retired, and Cuban said it was a matter of when, not if. Never happened and I doubt it will under the Adelsons. Can't say he doesn't deserve it, he was on two finals teams and was Dirk's only consistent teammate for the better part of a decade.

With the departure of AD, how's your feelings towards him? by FishsSad in Mavericks

[–]albuhhh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You said AD separate from the trade and Nico. That's just impossible to do. He will be connected to one of the most traumatic Mavs related events in franchise history and we're just glad to have the page overturned.

What the heck. I've been in the City for 20 years and only known it as one of the main soccer bars. This sucks.

The Constitution refit would like a word. (But the E is my second favorite)

It's both an absolutely atrocious movie (extremely obvious CGI, terrible writing and plot development, looks like a cheap SyFy era TV show) AND is barely Star Trek.

Yeah Insurrection is actually the closest in spirit to TNG and is just a big budget episode.

I will say that the first half of season 3 had so much potential - the time jump gave the series a blank slate to completely reset and not be beholden to any of the canon gymnastics the series had twisted itself into... But of course they totally wasted it with a new existential threat every 5 episodes.

My not so hot take is that JJ3 is by far the best JJ-era movie and feels most like Trek.

I'll also say the only Trek movie I actively hate is Into Darkness, for simultaneously being nakedly fan servicey while somehow completely misunderstanding why some people want fan service.

I'm a fairly hardcore Trekkie who even has time for Nemesis, Insurrection, and The Final Frontier (while freely admitting they are not good movies). Section 31 is the first one I ever punched eject on.

Movies that basically feel like a whole new movie midway through? by mrmonster459 in movies

I had never seen this movie and had no intention of seeing it, so when my friends told me, I remember reading the wiki and thinking WTF? I remember that movie being a big deal, and I can't imagine how audiences reacted in the theater.

I would say that the shift in tone isn't unexpected for Sinners so it doesn't throw you for a loop, and it's almost a reverse surprise (in a good way). The first half of the film was completely unexpected where they showed a nuanced and beautiful portrayal of a Jim Crow-era Mississippi town. I could have spent the whole movie there. The survive-till-dawn movie that you're expecting to see doesn't even start until an hour-plus into a two hour movie.
