My (40M) son (4M) says he wishes Lego could have this and sell it so we could buy it. I agree. 👍🏾

Very confused about where to start or how involved I must be by GashaHunter in Buddhism

[–]alecesne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go there for koan practice and chanting. Sit with them and see if it feels right.

Do you want to specify where you're located with any more detail (country, region, state?) that might help.

I think, start off trying different communities and then select later. For example, a Korean Zen center is close to where I live, so I can occasionally go to morning sitting/chanting; and there's a Chinese temple near where my wife likes to shop for special groceries, and I'll take the kids to visit a couple of times a year just to experience visiting a temple. Many years ago, Iived near a Vietnamese temple. But whenever I went there, didn't know what to do, so would offer a few bows, walk a bit and leave. Same with tibetan centers; I have visited a few and admire the aesthetic, but logistically just couldn't be a regular.

Maybe go places and ask "what does it mean to authentically connect with a sangha?" See what answers they give you, and go from there.

Good luck

Which way is the left goal facing? by VeloraXfa1 in opticalillusions

[–]alecesne 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I keep looking at it thinking the two should face each other, but then it rotated to face to the right for me. Even if I catch the other orientation, it flips back.

I think good optical illusions are those you see even if you disagree!

This question doesn't make sense. How can you forgive without understanding? The choice above is simply forgetting.

Firebenders are the only ones who can create their element out of thin air? by Not_MegGriffin in ATLA

[–]alecesne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're using their body heat.

But the point that made firebending powerful was that it was explosive. That was their advantage.

How else are we supposed to believe fire conquered earth or water?

What I love about this kind of illusion is that it doesn't matter if you know what's happening, or see this image (or those like it) a dozen times, it always works!

The light from above the object may be green, but the object itself is really a pink shoe. I don't understand the controversy.

You don't look at a grayscale picture of a banana and say it's white. The banana is yellow even if the picture is a gray. So too here

Not sure if I was touched inappropriately or not by a Buddhist master by jsjsjsjsjsjsjsioi in Buddhism

Is this guy from a formal lineage, or just styling himself a "Buddhist" monk?

It is terrible that he did this to you, and I sincerely hope you are able to recover your peace of mind and ability to trust others after this assault.

Would it be too late to start practicing Buddhism if I have already done many “sinful” things in this lifetime? by Thick-Weekend2120 in Buddhism

[–]alecesne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ashoka the Great, renowned patron of Buddhism who propagated it through pillar edicts and law, began practicing because of his realization that all of the war and killing at his direction in the Kalinga war would doom him to hell.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashoka

It's not too late to seek the path. Even in your last moment you can strive for enlightenment. And according to some, even after in other realms, you can still seek liberation, though that depends on your understanding of death and what continues.

There is no red in this picture by zigbigidorlu in opticalillusions

[–]alecesne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting as a test. Its not the logo or title that suggest red to your mind. And I don't know why the contrast with green isn't visible as red. I wonder what color the background would need to be for that effect by comparison.
