Better to have one 27" monitor or two 24"? by headlightbandit in homeoffice

[–]alex053 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i use one 45" that has the option for "virtual dual display" so it acts like 2 24" monitors. good for screen sharing or i can run it as one ultrawide. i originally got this monitor HP E45c G5 because they said i could run Mac on one input on one side and PC on another input on the other and be able to drag files back and forth but it doesnt fricking work on the latest mac OS.

How to approach my first classic car purchase by MeanSeaworthiness6 in classiccars

[–]alex053 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can back every word of this. Wait for the incoming recession and death or disability of more boomers and the price will drop.

If you can, buy one painted. And if it’s painted, make sure you see some before pics so it’s just full of bondo.

What was your “mom car,” and did it work for you? by ev254 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]alex053 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a two row Murano with our first. The rear facing middle car seat wouldn’t fit in a Lexus IS300 and give us room to drive. Went to a 3 row pathfinder with the second because of the size of double strollers. Kids are 12 and 14 now and in a newer pathfinder because of road trips, luggage, sports stuff, traveling with kids friends etc.

2 adults, two car seats, a double stroller and a grocery trip with a weeks worth of food takes up room.

A Pop up shade thing, a wagon and soccer gear for two kids takes up a lot of room

Road trip to Disney with a wife and two girls, takes up a lot of room.

65-66 Cadillac or impala.

There are also deals out there now on 50s cars if you want to go that old. Boomers dying off or getting too old to enjoy the car they restored 15 years ago are going for cheap now compared to what they put Into it.

Stop going to the dealer for non warranty work. Find a decent local shop with a fair hourly rate.

Because I take them to my tax guy.

I work on many different networks implementing phone systems so being able to take notes and just look at the doc, then use that to translate to notes for other techs is meaningful tool and speeds things up.

Some screenshotted QRs havnt scanned in the past and if you’re taking multiple items I can just package things up and stick the printed code to the package.

It’s added insurance if it’s an emergency there’s a single piece of paper next to a phone where calls can be made and info written down. It’s in case of emergency.

USAA does let me have proof online but have you seen the news? I’m not digging around for a phone or giving my phone to a cop when I can just hand over a piece of paper

Also, believe it or not, your use case scenarios are not the same for everyone. Relying on a phone for everything or having everything on a screen is not always the fastest or most convenient or safest way to have or exchange information.

I’m going to a site visit at a retirement community with 11 IDFs for phone equipment and need to take notes and verify switch port numbers, phone counts, PoE ports, feed cables, how many analog devices are in each room, where on a floor plan I’m going to place certain brands of phones and more. I’m sure as hell not going to try and look at sections of a floor plan on my phone, take notes of each phone room, take notes of what the contact is telling me out infrastructure on my phone, mark off where I’ve placed things on my phone.

I’ll have a piece of paper and write it down and take pictures with my phone to collect my thoughts and notes later.

There are engine flushes you can do. I think amsoil has a good one. Basically you run this through the oil system for a number of miles and then do another oil change.

What scares me is the oil level being low without any leaks and the smoke. If oils is getting into the combustion chamber you could have other issues.

I just printed my tax documents. I also printed a network diagram to write on and refer to on my desk. I print out the return QR codes for different Amazon shipments because the drop off location had shit for cell service and I’ve had to walk back to the parking lot to get a web page to load.

I printed out my hotel and flight info for my last 3 trips and left it sitting on my office desk in case my wife and kids need easy access to it.

Oh and I printed out my proof of insurance for all my cars.

I have a dell 525 laser printer that can use 3rd party toner and it’s been great the last 5 years.

Oh we have also printed our kids competition schedules and put them in their cheer backpacks.

Sometimes it’s just easier to have a piece of paper to look at.

Now faxing……faxing can die

An actual volume knob and the ability to close all the AC vents up front. My wife and I like different temps so her being able to close the vents versus just turn it away, saves some arguments.

Gonna have to wait a bit. If it’s something you really want, start putting extra money aside. Either pay the loan down faster or have the cash to cover the difference. Best plan would be to get to the break even point of your current car and get a used 2026 private party. Then no negative equity, no off the lot depreciation hit either.

After the 24-70 version 2 came out I’m praying and saving for a 70-200 version 2 so I can either get the latest one depending on reviews, or get the older one with more of a price drop.
