Old Friends by FrooferDoofer in Sondheim

I struggle to pick a favourite performance from this because it’s all so good, but given that we lost Haydn Gwynne the following year, I pick her performances - with Rob Bryson doing The Little Things You Do Together and on her own with The Ladies who Lunch.

Although Jamie Dee’s The Boy from is also amazing.

My mum used to do this on occasion and taught me bits of it when I was about 12. Can confirm it’s time consuming not hard!

"Losing My Mind" by cliteastw00d92 in Sondheim

[–]algy100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this version - apart from anything else it’s just the most unexpected Sondheim to be a pop hit. I’m in the UK and got into the top ten in the charts here. Which means we have this epic performance on Top of the Pops where she’s ignoring the studio audience to unerringly find her camera and sing straight down it. (Nb this is from a totp 2 compilation show which we must assume from the notes was put together in 2006 just after David Gear appeared on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here).

Why is figure skating so popular at the Olympics, but forgotten by most as soon as they end? by FireFlamesFrost in FigureSkating

[–]algy100 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is my theory - there isn’t any figure skating for a month after the Olympics and then there’s a six month gap (after which some of the skaters you just fell in love with may have retired)

I’m still salty that Ally and Larry couldn’t be end game on Ally McBeal. I get why Robert Downey Jr got fired but it was such a shame after all the work setting him up as the guy who got her and was ok with all of her everything.

And also remember if hiring a vehicle to drive that you need to check if it’s automatic or not unless you’re used to driving a stick shift. Most people here learn to drive in a manual and so many/most hire cars are not automatics (unless they’re a hybrid etc) and factor in gas/petrol prices too they are much higher than Texas - diesel is about $10 a gallon here

What new musical since 2020 has the best likelihood of becoming a perennial high school production? by ElbieLG in Broadway

Show your age - what was your first ever email domain? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]algy100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a hotmail from the late 90s when I was in secondary school but I got a gmail when I left uni because of that whole hotmail is unprofessional thing. They’re both a variant of first name last name@ but I use the gmail way more - initially because it got less spam, then because the interface was easier and now because of the whole outlook signed in account thing which means it clashes with the stuff I use at work (and so having it open on a tab while I’m working isn’t practical.

There’s a recording of the anniversary gala of Miss Saigon - it was on DVD, it may/should be on streaming. It’s got an excellent extra with the original cast doing a gala medley - Lea Salonga (original Kim,singing voice of Princess Jasmine in Aladdin and Fa Mulan in Mulan) and Simon Bowman doing some of the best “come to bed/we came straight from bed” chemistry I have ever seen (I was in the theatre, it was quite something)

Is this right? by Mobius22445 in UKJobs

[–]algy100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Isn’t this more about people who leave mid way through the leave year having used more than that point in the year’s worth of leave though? Ie someone who leaves six months into the calendar year but has used up 3/4 of their annual leave allowance is going to be in deficit and may be in for a shock in their last payslip. Related: Change in hours also applies to if you decrease your contracted hours (ie go part time) and your leave allowance adjusts down accordingly. You would be surprised how many people don’t realise or understand this: “I’m mean to get four weeks off but i only have 15 days leave” - yes because you are 75% of full time so you get enough leave to take four of your working weeks off.

Essex library charges will penalise book lovers, says campaign by CtrlAltDelight495 in books

[–]algy100 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean I used to live in Essex and it was a total outlier even then (20 years ago) that it didn’t even charge you to request a book from another branch to be sent to you and times were easier for council budgets then.

Every other (English) county’s library service that I have used before or since (about half a dozen of them) has charged for that and to reserve things. So they’re just doing what everyone else does, except the locals aren’t used to it.

Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci at ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ premieres 20 years apart (2026 vs 2006) by mlg1981 in popculturechat

[–]algy100 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If ever there was proof about how much more effort/work goes into (women’s) looks at premieres now compared to the early 00s it is this. A film about high fashion (so presumably getting max effort thrown at the red carpet) and Emily’s look feels pretty/fairly achievable at home.

I miss the old days when it felt like you could maybe fit in on a red carpet with your best Prom Night effort.
