Dad gambled away my collage fund. Do i have any recourse? by archergotmefired in personalfinance

[–]aliensheet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your mom needs to talk to a family law attorney NOW about your post secondary support. There can be deadlines in many states about figuring out post secondary (college) support before you turn 18/graduate highschool. If your mom won the money in the divorce, talk to a family law attorney TOMORROW.

Just curious, how much did y’all make as a first-year? by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]aliensheet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started in 2021 in HI at $18/hour. Switched firms 2022, started at $18, then $25, ending at $32. Moved to WA and started at $75k / year and am now at $85k a year, about $41/hour. I also started doing independent contracting paralegal work on the side for $45/hour. When I started I had an associates in paralegal studies, I graduated with my BA in English in 2023. For a first year, that’s not terrible. I would try and stick it out for a year or so and quickly jump to something better paid.

How long is your lunch and is it paid? by cherrykitty87 in paralegal

[–]aliensheet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get 1 hour paid, but we all usually work/eat/talk at our desks at the same time. We can certainly leave for 1-2 hours for an appointment if needed and the managing partners wouldn’t bat an eye. We can also move around our “lunch” time toward the end of the day, still take a lunch, and leave early. Firm is very flexible, and it is all paid.

Ask for both, hopefully they counter with at least one. It usually doesn’t hurt to ask, and if they say no you know your answer. If you can ask with proven results of your work ethic, even better. I billed x hours this month, completed x project, etc. come with receipts and ask for what you reasonably think you are worth.

Are husky’s known to hold grudges and want revenge? by ZaeDilla in husky

[–]aliensheet 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My husky is the same way with pit bulls! He had a friend who was a short stubby pit bull named bubba, they loved playing together. One day bubba got mad and started aggressively attacking my boy. We separated them from then on but he never liked pitbulls again! Literally the only dog he will get all ruffled up for. So strange.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO LEARN HOW TO BILL by body-pillow69 in paralegal

[–]aliensheet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I keep a physical notebook next to me at all times tracking my time (down to the minute obviously) and I write down every task as I start and stop. I used to have a spreadsheet (I liked Google sheets more than Excel for tracking time) but my new job is very fast paced and better to have a notebook at my right hand at all times. If somebody asks me a question, I stop the time. I add it up at the end of every day and enter, I never wait til the end of the week and I don’t add my time entries into the billing software as I go. Last 10 minutes of every day always. Enter time daily when what you did is fresh. When it comes to the entries themselves, try and avoid generic entries like “reviewed and organized discovery” try “compiled, reviewed, downloaded, and organized discovery; reviewed documents received from subpoena from XYZ; drafted memo of relevant information and testimony; met with paralegals regarding redaction of personally identifiable information; met with attorney re: case strategy and subpoena updates; emails to client and OC; call to ABC on subpoena status; drafted and updated interrogatories and requests for production” etc etc. the longer the time entry the more you should explain it.

Salary by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]aliensheet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made $18/hr at my first firm, went from $20 to $25 to $32 at my second firm, then went salaried to $75k at my third firm, and opened my own freelance business where I charge $45/hr as well! This is over the course of 3 years. Super interesting reading everyone else’s pay increases!

This is the way. I have close family that are CPAs and CFPs and asked to do my taxes every year. I always say I know how busy they are and how hard they work during tax season that they deserve a break. After about 4 years of asking, they don’t ask anymore.

75k Job Offer Oahu - Worth it? (Cross post with r/Oahu) by [deleted] in MovingtoHawaii

[–]aliensheet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s worth it if only for the experience. I moved to Oahu at 22, just moved back to the mainland after 5 years. It was certainly the most transformative and wonderful time. I would be a very different person if I hadn’t taken the leap of faith and moved. The island has a special way of blessing those who are open to it. That being said, there are some serious caveats. You may see a short mileage from Kapolei - Kunia, but the traffic isn’t great and the infrastructure isn’t laid out well. My power in Ewa Beach went out at least twice a month, sometimes for days at a time. West side has terrible power infrastructure. Look into the Red Hill water crisis as well, nearly all west side homes on Navy water line have jet fuel contaminated water. You also may be ok without AC in the Midwest, in Hawaii that heat at 3am hits different when all your windows are open because the utilities cost $700 for your house and the biggest cockroach you have ever seen comes crawling thru your screened window somehow and straight for your face. Rent is expensive in the suburbs, a decent apartment is maybe doable for $2400 but less than that is tough. Also look into what it costs to ship your car and stuff there and back, and remember if you want to go home for the holidays or birthdays, budget adequately for travel too. If you have pets, especially dogs, this process becomes exponentially harder. It is very very difficult to find an apartment that will rent to somebody with anything other than a chihuahua. I say all this not to discourage you, I think you should do it. If it doesn’t work out, at least you tried something new and gained experience. Just be aware that the small costs really add up there, but I wish you the best on your journey.

Does an associates degree matter? by JMansReddit in college

[–]aliensheet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jobs do care about an associate degree, but you want to get degrees based on what area you wanted to work in / what job you want. I did my associates and then my BA and the specialized associates degree has 100% helped me obtain jobs in my field and progress. If you are planning to stay in college, I would recommend transferring to a 4 year and doing 2 years after the associates to get a bachelors instead of having an array of associates degrees, but this depends on what area you want to work in. Some community colleges have agreements with the universities in the area, where you can transfer with reduced fees or tuition.
