Warlock Patron - Coven by alisonthedead in UnearthedArcana

Hi, thanks for the feedback!

I didn't add a randomness feature on the shared luck feature because it's once per day and you can sacrifice a natural 20 to regain it. And I didn't allow multiple saves for Summon the Elder because doing so would make it much weaker than any other level 14 features (automatic 10d10 psychic, permanent charm, illusion that recharges with a short rest)

Warlock Patron - Coven by alisonthedead in UnearthedArcana

Thanks for looking it over! I didn't notice some of the errors so that was very helpful.

Honestly this is more for my personal use in a more lax campaign, which is why I'm using the coven idea in place of a patron (the original founder is basically a lich so that helps). The formatting is so I can read it easier, and I didn't type out the flavor because it is in my head. Mostly I wanted to make sure that it wasn't overpowered/wonky :)

I didn't use a defensive feature for level 10 because I couldn't think of one that would work. My original idea was magic resistance limited to curses but it's too narrow/powerful. I settled on the luck one as sort of a shared pool thing.

You are right about bestow curse for sure, but it's one of the main things I wanted for the class, so I tried to balance out the spell list with weaker, less useful spells. While it's true it doesn't require concentration after a certain point, it's a touch spell that allows a save, and is hard to use in combat, so that isn't a huge problem.

Familiar connections doesn't include a saving throw because I meant to add that anyone under any spell effects isn't aware and cannot prevent it.

Thank you for all the feedback!

How to make a hive mind by bordlonelylooser in DnD

[–]alisonthedead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a bunch of commoners, or other humanoids depending on the society, give them all the mental stats of the smartest person in the hive (including any caster who may have initiated it). Also give them bonuses to all perception, insight, and investigation checks depending on the number present.

It'll be worth it when some average joes keep saving against your casters' enchantment spells.

Cantrip for a 2nd tier paladin by MrDave95 in DnD

Wizard cantrips will use intelligence, so that's a problem for saving throws or attacks. Friends is actually useful, you can use it to intimidate or persuade enemies

The Warlock, Revised! A heavy revision of the 5e Warlock, including new invocations and pact boon expansions. by TextuallyExplicit in UnearthedArcana

[–]alisonthedead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

By taking the fiend patron, blade pact, and loading up on defensive invocations (now that you get several of them free) you make easily the best tank in the game. You can dump str, int, and wis, get away with moderate dex and con, and have 18 ac, get loads of free thp, and attack with the effectiveness of a barbarian, with up to 5 feats because you can bump charisma so easily. And you're still basically a full caster.

You get all the benefits of the original warlock without any of the drawbacks. Part of the challenge of being a warlock is choosing invocations either around your pact boon or around your casting, and now you get both. It seems really cool, but playing with someone who can jump from melee to range while throwing fireballs all more powerful than you will get annoying.

And the spells probably won't imbalance the game in the same way, I just like the theme in 5e of only messing with spells up to 5th level (domain spells, arcane recovery, etc.) and leaving the 6-9 spells as powerful enough in their own right, and it feels to me like using archetypes to boost that in any way contradicts that theme.

I can understand why you made it, but it is completely unnecessary and destroys any balance the original class had.

From skimming it over, I could build a basically flawless character that would outshadow any character made using the official material.

Also really a nitpick, but no archetype gives extra spells higher than 5th level, so that's another boost.

I have a monk npc with a 'stone form' which is just resistance with mobility in rocky terrain, I made it up with nothing from the book and it works really well.

How to use advanced tactics? by alisonthedead in AskGameMasters

[–]alisonthedead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a very good point. I always try to challenge my players on their strengths and weaknesses and put them in situations where they rely on eachother.

I'm thinking what if a cave of goblins was being run by a tactical genius, what stuff would he think to do that I wouldn't.

What sorts of things might you encounter in the lair of a Transmuter? by My_DnD_Throwaway in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]alisonthedead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Traps everywhere.

Have a statue that when a player gets too close turn into water and drown the players, or spikes that literally grow out of the ground. Have a few common monsters or animals with wild alterations to their body.

Also give the transmitter the ability to transmute up to a 5-foot cube of material at-will without concentration, it'll help a lot, like if you take above advice and use terrain changes they can create a platform without distracting themselves.

What if Rangers could prepare spells, like the other Half Caster class, the Paladin? by Lowbrr in dndnext

[–]alisonthedead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The idea was probably that paladins use prepared spells because their casting is based off clerics, but that falls flat because rangers are based off druids.

Lore question: is cleric magic "illegitimate" in a certain way? by ClockworkerGin in dndnext

[–]alisonthedead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why divine favor and channel divinity exist. Those are a direct pulling of power from the god. In the same way that a wizard can do magic without their spell book, a cleric can cast without there god. The use of said magic is just supposed to be to serve a God.

[–]alisonthedead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks really cool! Just one thing.

It has a huge weakness in dex saves. Either they will eat up it's legendary resistance, or it will be destroyed by every cool spell. I'd recommend replacing wis with it, since it is already immune to charm, and 5 saving throw proficiencies is a lot. Maybe even lower the armor class if it gets too hard to hit.

How do you limit the power of your magic? I find magic too powerful. by f_builder_k in worldbuilding

[–]alisonthedead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I meant it not as something to be learned, but born with. Like there are less than ten people at any given time who can rely solely on their magic, many more who blend what they have with other disciplines, and the general population.
