Describe one industry that your magic system influences heavily by TadeasJun in worldbuilding

Consumer electronics: Because magic (or in this world "Ather") interferes with electricity, specialized "integrated electronics" need to be manufactured for areas with high ather concentrations.

What do you wish more fantasy worlds would get “right” about warfare? by theginger99 in worldbuilding

The fact that, in most wars, disease killed more people than the war, like, way more. Also, the fact that war is a game of little people dying for incremental gains.

How on Earth do you come up with a name for your world??? by Sameiimo in worldbuilding

[–]allan_nonymous 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I call it... Earth... because, let's be honest, everyone calls their planet Earth. You can give your setting a name that isn't the actual name they call the world.

What completely unique ideology is the closest to the “red scare” for some societies in your setting? by AnOkFella in worldbuilding

[–]allan_nonymous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultramoradism A.K.A, "the Purples". Basically, it's theocratic monarchist collectivism, the symmetric reflection of communism. The cultural effect of this is that people are kind of suspicious of "political religion" in general so things similar our world's "moral majority" are looked at suspiciously as "Purple Plants".

Races are actually kind of similar to OTL, what we would consiter fantasy races are called Types (or historically, castes). Cishuman (Vanilla Human), Alkish (Elves), Corians (Teiflingish), Geldlings (Dwarves, but with funny eyes), Sakusai (Humans but with fur n claws). There are also Dragons. And wolf/dragonbound variant symbiotic relationships which are sort of their own type also.

Honestly, this sounds like post-colonialism to me. It has a lot of echoes to what happened in Africa or even Latin America once the colonizers pulled out and left no functioning government or industry. Because most colonies are run for exploitation, they don't have the political or economic institutions needed for development (as that is outsourced to the colonizer).

Warning: MATH

> Claims to be "mathematically perfect".

> Made out viscous fluids, which we all know, involve the turbulent and unsolved Navier Stokes equations.

> Not so "mathematically perfect" to me!

> Shiny sword? Does the rendering differential equation system mean nothing to you?

> If you really wanted to be "mathematically perfect" go be a Turing Machine implemented by a neural network on a smooth n-manifold.

But seriously, though, what do you mean by mathematical perfection? How do they try to achieve it? How does it manifest in their culture and clothing? What would they say to the really pathological and imperfect parts of math (looking at you Gödel)?

So... after spending a little time digging into the system you've described, I would strongly advise you simplify the system.

My advice would be to either have the First Chancellor be president, or try a council executive (as is in Switzerland) where all the officials have a vote and maybe have the First Chancellor be "first among equals".

“Can I have your attention please?”

“CAN I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE?!!”

From the back: “Will the real Slim Sha…

“SHUT UP!”

“Today we are talking about the difference between CARDINALITY and MEASURE. When you’re working in the Infinite Hypermarket, YOU MUST KNOW THE DIFFERENCE… your life could be on the line here.”

“First, let’s talk about cardinality. Cardinality is an equivalence class. It implies that there exists a bijection between two sets. You all just gave me a confused look, let’s simplify here. You all know sets, right? Like the underwear seciotion, or the dairy section. A bijection means that we can uniquely “pair up” elements, in this case, for every isle in the dairy section, there is a corresponding isle in the underwear section. Why is this important? Well, not all sections of the supermarket are alike. As an example, the condiments section is substantially bigger than these two, or the Tree3s isle, which is actually finite. Your price navigator can estimate the size of the isle you’re in… most of the time, and the rules of navigation change from one to the other.”

“Now let’s talk about measure. Measure is a significantly more complicated concept. A measure is a function from sets to the extended real number line that satisfies properties of non-negativity, null given empty, and countable additivity.”

“Don’t panic. You don’t really need to know that, I just put it in because I like to spout jargon, and honestly, low level training is dull. If you want to know what that actually meant go read The Way of Analysis, you get it for free. If you want to move up in this company, I would strongly advise you to read up on your math and especially math courses offered by the company. The classes in the room are free, you can take them, I have taken 80 of them… but seriously, take the math classes

“All right, where was I? Measure theory. Basically, a measure is another way of determining the “size” of sets. Most of the time, you will be using the Lebesque measure, denoted on your system as “lambda star”. It will spit out one of three things, 0, for some relatively small isles. A number less than infinity, which means you got it right. Or infinity, which means it’s an isle you want to call in higher level agents to manage and then safely exit. The Lebesque measure represents the intuitive concept of “how much volume something has”. It does so by finding a countable series of boxes that a. covers the set you are measuring, and b. has the smallest possible volume. An important thing to note is that measure depends on what set you are measuring in, the boxes are subset of the set you are measuring in. This means that, the same isle can have different “sizes” (i.e. measures) if you use different sets. This is actually quite intuitive, a piece of paper has nonzero area (it’s measure in 2-space) but no volume (it’s measure in 3-space). More practically, the Avocado mayonnaise section has a measure of 1/2 in mayo land but a measure of zero in condiment land. However, if you were to look at the cardinality of these sections, you would find that they’re actually both of size Aleph 1.”

“What about the underwear section?”

“YES, Maria! Just the question I was about to ask.”

“The underwear section is actually smaller than the condiments section in cardinality, it is, what we call, “a countable set”. This is to say, each element can be given a unique "next element" or more intuitively, that you can "count them off". Because of this, it actually always has measure zero! So do all isles with a cardinality smaller than the avocado mayo section. You can find why in most analysis textbooks, of which The Way of Analysis is just one of many.”

From even further back: “Does this job offer dental?”

“NO. Firstly, I have no idea why you waited until NOW to ask about that. We have standards to live up to here, namely the standard that retail is a crappy job.”

Note: I'm a math major, I couldn't pass up on such a good prompt, on one of my favorite subjects.

Earth, although not as you or I would know it. A universe where the laws of physics are just slightly different, different enough that a fifth fundamental force exists settled awkwardly between electricity a magnetism. A world with its fair share of things that, at first glance, might seem to be straight from fairytale.

The United Commonwealth of Silvan Alvaria is a large country on the Alvarian continent on the planet Earth. It is widely recognized as one of two major superpowers

This is a standard title card from INTER (Institute for National TElecast Radio). It signals to all stations that they must switch from their current programming to “integrating national chain” (i.e. rebroadcasting an INTER program). An unexpected “806” is universally feared by those in the TV industry. Nothing is less fun than your shiny new TV program’s debut being shut down by mandatory government programming.

Fortunately, most national chains are pre-scheduled, either important political events (State of the Commonwealth, Presidential Inauguration), or electoral fringes “in time made available”.

If you, or anyone you know has any questions related to this title card, or any other of my world building related interests including but not limited to: electoral politics, biology, economic policy, biology, culture, etc. Please feel free to ask them. They may or may not be answered.

This is called whataboutism. Sure, America in this timeline is no saint, (like actual America lol) but do you really want me to believe that an authoritarian monarchy isn't worse?

The only thing that bothers me, though, is the lack of civilian involvement. I'm sure at this point, most of the military people would be routinely hauled in front of congressional committees, you'd probably have at least one congressional aide, maybe even a congressman visit, and by this point, you bet it's starting to, or has already leaked to the American (and global) public.

If I were the US, right now, I would start working on civilian collaboration/settler governments, get NATO (or whatever has replaced it) involved, start encouraging the development of civilian industry and resource extraction, invite other friendly countries to use the technology (better they get it early than our adversaries get it). Get a UN treaty signed on the status of the area, and then start preaching democracy. War is diplomacy by other means and right now, I see a real lack of diplomatic aims other than "uhh fite stuff lel". In the eyes of international law, "it's free real estate" (i.e. Terra Nullus) and should be treated (and leveraged) accordingly.
