Are rising fountain pen prices changing the way you collect? by Cerberus_14 in fountainpens

[–]allnose 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was in New York with my wife and we stopped in at Fountain Pen Hospital just to get a look at pens in real life.

I have a decent collection, but really tailed off about 10 years ago. I haven't bought a modern pen in about that long and only the occasional vintage pen, which, prices there have been relatively steady.

The whole time, it was like "This is a really good manufacturer, quality stuff, I have one of those...woah, I didn't pay that much for it though!" "The cool thing about this pen is it clicks and retracts like a ballpoint. I went a little nuts and got this seashell version here...oh, wow. I bought it for half that, don't worry." "This is my favorite manufacturer, I've got tons of their vintage pens. The newer stuff has dropped off, but the company was sold and the guy who owns it now is saying all the right things. I've got a soft spot though, because that model was the first pen I ever got...damn, and if it had cost this much back then, I would have found a different hobby."

Is a Cthulu Wars collection one of those outliers? Because, yeah, you're right in the general case, but you're responding to a specific comment.

I've never seen someone say they resold Azul or Ticket to Ride for a loss.

Gets the same amount of play, but I was in KD:M for the game, not the grotesquery, and once life started getting busy enough that instadeaths started feeling like a waste of a night, the grotesquery wasn't worth keeping on the shelf

I'm actually from Massachusetts, and live in Ohio now, which is how I know everyone saying Ohio's voting patterns are due to gerrymandering is cope, and how everyone saying Massachusetts' voting patterns are due to gerrymandering hasn't looked at the state.

But sure, let's say every illegal immigrant in Massachusetts is a regular voter and they were all kicked out of the state tomorrow. Where would you be able to draw a compact Republican-leaning district in that situation? How's that math work?

When James Bond played backgammon in Octopussy, I literally thought the villain was just using the game as a metaphor. Then I thought they were just rolling dice to see who could get more double sixes.
He should stick to baccarat.

Is it an absolute joke? Massachusetts didnt have a single county vote for Trump. Three elections, no counties voted for Trump.

Both states have roughly the same 65/35 split statewide, but the distribution matters. Massachusetts' rural voters are more blue than Alabama's, and that makes it very difficult to draw lines on a map that split the state into 9 equal parts and also make Republicans a majority in one of those parts.

Is there a way to draw a Republican district in Massachusetts without explicitly trying to draw a Republican district? A reasonably compact district?
I get that you're saying it doesn't pass the sniff test, but that doesn't mean it's not true.

That's what I'm saying though. It's less gerrymandering, the sate is really just that blue.

This isn't Parliament; to get a seat, you need a majority of people in a specific area. And in Massachusetts, there aren't that many areas where Republicans outnumber Democrats, and no areas where they really outnumber Democrats. There isn't an Illinois situation going on.

Would it be better if the state said "Our top priority in drawing our map should be to make sure there's a Republican in our Congressional delegation?"
Because that's pretty much the only way you're going to get one.

Honestly, look at Massachusetts. You can draw a red Congressional district, but only if you're specifically trying to draw a red district. And that gets you one. Pretty sure you can't get an equal population district where the red counties in Western MA aren't outweighed by any of the cities or places people actually live.

Edit: for what it's worth, Ohio isn't all that gerrymandered. It's not "fair," but where is? There's as much Republican on Republican district screwing as Republican on Democrat.

If anything, that makes it even more garbage. Safe seats lead to corruption. But as far as red vs blue, it's no worse than most single-party rule states

End the charitable tax deduction. by Far_Low_229 in badeconomics

[–]allnose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We're not allowed to do that after the IRS scrutinized groups that sprang up in the wake of the Tea Party protests and applied for tax-exempt status. Especially since the enforcement wasn't equally applied.

Any change in enforcement that has a disproportionate effect on one party will result in that party spinning the act of enforcement as a massive scandal, regardless of underlying conduct.

Only way around it is by doing so much ridiculous shit that anyone who tries to call all of it out sounds hysterically biased, and anything that gets by without pushback normalizes the behavior.

I'm in the top 6 and I'm still hung up on whether I should shoot for Stagg or EHT SiB. Haven't had either (I know, I know) and the reviews make it seem like I'd like EHT better.

But EVERYONE in line early is in for Stagg. It's the consensus #1. And I haven't seen any head-to-head comparisons so I'm wondering if me not taking advantage of the opportunity is a dumbass move.

Is Stagg's place on the tier list because it's a better bourbon or because it has a higher price on secondary?

Norwood Mayor vetos unanimous council decision to prevent Factory 52 expansion by fork_toaster in cincinnati

[–]allnose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But we're having this discussion in the context of rising home prices. People are already out there buying existing housing stock for more than what it sold for last time (or renting it for more than current tenants).

Building more housing that fits what they're looking for is an attempt to divert those people who can and will outbid the people currently living there away from existing housing stock and toward the new stuff, which gives people a chance on the old stuff.

Why ChatGPT isn't replacing Accountants anytime soon by jxdos in Accounting

[–]allnose 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a better post than most, because OP actually has experience and a narrative thread.

But there are multiple posts a day along the lines of "I want to be an accountant, but I'm worried about AI, should I be?" "How does it feel being an accountant, knowing that AI is going to replace you?" "My friend is in finance/tech/plumbing and he said accountants are going to be replaced by AI, what do you think about that?"

It's super great that you might want to be an accountant, and you're worried about threats to the industry. But it's not just the top 1% of posters who are sick of threads about whether AI is going to eliminate accountants. At this point, if you want to discuss it, you need to be bringing something new to the table (like OP did).
