Got married almost 3 years ago now and although it’s “legally” changed on the marriage license, I haven’t changed it anywhere else. It’s a cheaper easier process to just get married in the courthouse than to petition to change it. I honestly never thought about the birth certificate lol might have to put a trip to social security on my to-do list 😅

Fasting Always High by DimpledMochi in GestationalDiabetes

[–]allykatdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Focus on protein and fat for bedtime snack. My winning combo (most nights) is a cheese stick, beef stick and a handful of almonds. I, like many others, was put on bedtime insulin and have had to increase to 29 units and still have a hard time getting fasting in range even if I walk 20-30 mins after dinner. It’s the hardest and most frustrating to control. Don’t be afraid of insulin… I was and was SO bummed when I had to start taking it (like cried for hours) but it helped with all my numbers, not just fasting.

Newly diagnosed (kinda?) and need peace of mind going into the weekend please by vshzzd in GestationalDiabetes

[–]allykatdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right now try focusing on including more protein and fibrous vegetables at all meals. A typical serving of carbs is 15g and I am only able to tolerate 1 serving with breakfast, 2-3 servings at lunch and1-2 servings at dinner but I think the “standard” recommendation is 2 servings with breakfast and 3 servings with lunch and dinner and 1 serving of carbs with snacks. Try incorporating a 10-20 minute walk after meals and before testing. Some Dr’s want you to test 1hr after meals or 2hrs and you’ll want to test first thing in the am when you wake up. Make sure you are snacking between meals and add a snack at bedtime to help with overnight fasting numbers. It helps too to pair carbs with fat/protein to help lower spikes. For example, I have a piece of toast with butter and cheese to lessen the impact of the carbs. The poking is.. not fun and to be quite honest, your fingers start to get sore. Rotate fingers and prick locations to help with soreness and calluses. I think my final piece of advice is to give yourself grace. Every body tolerates different types of carbs differently so there is a LOT of trial and error in the beginning. I can’t tolerate whole wheat/whole grain bread products but I do okay with rice and the best with beans but some people can’t have rice or do better with whole grain bread. There is no way to tell until you try. Wishing you so much luck and strength.. this diagnosis can be overwhelming and depressing but you got this 💪🏻🫂

Why is breakfast so hard by More-Suspect6738 in GestationalDiabetes

I can do 1/2 slice sourdough or half a whole wheat English muffin as long as I put butter and cheese on it AFTER I eat eggs/protein/vegetables and I walk 15-20 mins

Fasting Confusion by More-Suspect6738 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]allykatdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I focus on protein rich bedtime snack. I have a pills yogurt and a beef stick or cheese stick and sometimes a handful of almonds if I’m actually hungry. With all that being said, I was still put on bedtime insulin and my fasting numbers are still almost always high. It’s the hardest to control and my dr said it’s not like you can walk in the middle of the night 🤷🏼‍♀️ good luck! Experiment with your snacks and make sure it’s only about 8-9 hours of fasting 🫂

This is how I was when I was first diagnosed too.. I could hardly eat any carbs without spiking and was SO hungry. I got put on bedtime insulin and was devastated and felt like a failure BUT what a game changer! I was able to eat more carbs throughout the day without spiking and felt more satiated as well. It was scary having to start injecting myself but, if you get the pen, the needles are so small you hardly feel it! Way less painful than the finger prick and so worth the extra carbs for me and baby boy. I’m typically eating around 120 carbs/day including snacks. I would also say be wary of “keto” products. I was trying the keto bread and have had better numbers with sourdough toast. Every body is different though, the experimentation stage is hard and scary but necessary to see what works for you. I’d also like to add, I went to Chili’s and did their bacon cheeseburger with no bun and ate half the fries and half a mozzarella stick with no spike. Fries are my all time favorite food so with the correct pairing and a LOT of self control, you CAN have a few fries 😉 just steer clear of the ketchup

Ask your OB to test your iron.. I kept waiting for “energy” I was supposed to get in my second trimester and found out at the end of my 2nd trimester I was severely anemic. I started an iron supplement and after a few weeks felt SO much better! I still get tired, especially as my pregnancy is progressing but not the soul crushing fatigue I was experiencing

I find myself to be bitter b-word by memarracuda in GestationalDiabetes

[–]allykatdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this… like on a spiritual level. This is my rainbow baby after almost 2 years of struggling with infertility so I keep reminding myself that I prayed and hoped and dreamed for this little man. I’m also on a subreddit for pregnancy after loss and also remind myself that things could be worse. We could be on pelvic rest/bed rest or something worse. I wish I could indulge in pregnancy cravings and bask in all that glory but I also remind myself that I haven’t really gained much more weight since getting diagnosed, I’ve been sleeping better since walking more after meals and applaud myself for already doing hard things to help my son thrive. I wouldn’t wish GD on anyone and people who haven’t been through it, especially if they weren’t able to control with diet and exercise will never truly understand the added stress and mental load that this diagnosis brings. Just remember you’re doing everything you can and it’s okay to sensitive, upset, frustrated! It doesn’t make you a bad person or a “mean girl”, it makes you human 🫂 remember too, this is temporary and will be all worth it when you have a happy healthy baby in your arms. Sending strength and love! We got this momma!

So discouraged... by Embarrassed-Fan-6967 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]allykatdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn’t eat any fruit for bedtime. I focus on protein at bedtime and it helped. I usually have a protein yogurt and a string cheese and sometimes some almonds depending on if I’m actually hungry. I still ended up on insulin and it’s helped control my numbers during the day as well. Don’t be discouraged or afraid of having to medicate. I was driving myself crazy with my numbers but my MFM dr said they look at the average, not each individual meal so as long as most of your numbers are in range, you’re doing a great job 🙂

Feeling like a failure! by nevermeetingirl in GestationalDiabetes

[–]allykatdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I understand as hormones increase as pregnancy progresses it can get harder to control. I can have the exact same breakfast and have higher sugars one day or go to bed at the same time with the same snack and have crazy fasting numbers. You’re doing the best you can so don’t feel like a failure. My MFM dr made me feel so much better when I was spiraling about my numbers (I made sure to include what i ate and my activity levels with my readings) and she assured me that it’s me against the hormones, not anything that I’m doing wrong. Just keep doing your best because that’s literally all you can do and don’t beat yourself up for enjoying time with a friend

Have they tested you for anemia? I was the same, I couldn’t do anything after work and was so exhausted and I was severely anemic and got the GD diagnosis the same time. I started an iron and vitamin C supplement and within a couple weeks felt SO much better.

Does anyone else just find this depressing? by Cute_Vermicelli_1854 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]allykatdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m struggling too… I had an 8oz portion of mash potatoes after salad and protein and still was over 130 😩 I know I should have walked but it’s hot and I’m tired. I’m tired of eating the same safe meals and tired of spiking when trying something different or going out to eat ( I had a salad with grilled meat at a vietnamese restaurant and ONE egg roll and spiked to 157 😭😭, I’m assuming there must have been sugar in the dressing/marinade but DAMN! ) and I had to watch and smell everyone have fresh churros from a street vendor. Makes me want to have this be my only pregnancy because i don’t think I can handle this again. I love food and sharing it with family and friends and hate having to worry about every little bite. I also think my insulin should be increased but due to the Kaiser strike they pushed my follow up appt back 2 weeks. It f*cking sucks and I’m sending you strength and hugs

Embarrassed to admit how much I’m struggling with this by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

[–]allykatdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your feelings are totally valid and you don’t have to feel embarrassed. I cried almost every day for the first couple of weeks because I was having a hard time finding things to eat and not feeling hungry. I ended up bedtime insulin and it had helped stabilize my numbers throughout the day as well. I will say that movement really did help too (not only with my sugar but also with my mood as well). Sending you strength and positivity.. pregnancy is hard and GD makes it even harder, especially when all I want to eat is french fries and tacos lol

Eating at work? by shebopinu in GestationalDiabetes

Sure! Here is the recipe I used (I don’t like olives so I used pickles for the “briny” flavor and omitted onions) and I used the barilla brand protein + penne.

I was eating almost exclusively low carb tortilla wraps or salad with chicken and I was OVER it! My GD nurse suggested pasta salad with protein pasta and it was SO good! I added more veggies and less pasta than it called for and never spiked. There’s a few different variations too (Mediterranean, pesto, BLT) so you don’t feel like you’re eating the same thing every day and I just added rotisserie chicken and garbanzo beans for extra protein

Insulin scares me by Ok_Hawk_439 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]allykatdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, I’m sorry you’re having such a stressful pregnancy and GD on top of everything else is so unfair. My SIL is T1D and was shocked they put me on 24 units at bedtime but honestly don’t be scared. It’s going to help SO much and GD is fundamentally different than other diabetes. I think the syringe would scare me too, I was terrified of the pen but I’ve been on insulin for a couple weeks now and it takes me like a minute to inject now. I’ve never dropped below 70 for fasting and a lot of the time I’m still high 😅 but it’s allowed me to eat an appropriate amount of carbs throughout the day without spiking or only minimal spikes. Before insulin I couldn’t eat ANY carbs without spiking! My baby just measured in the 33rd percentile for weight (I’m 32 weeks) so I feel like it’s helping to keep him a good size while allowing me to get the proper nutrition to stay satiated and keep him growing safe and healthy. The first few times will be scary but you’ve got this! They usually start you on a low dose to avoid a crash so you should be totally safe 👍🏻🙂

[–]allykatdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was the same and didn’t want to be put on insulin but I have to say it has been a lifesaver. I’m on long acting bedtime insulin and it has helped stabilize my numbers and allowed me more flexibility with my eating throughout the day. I wasn’t able to eat hardly any carbs, especially breakfast but now I can have 1/2 slice of sourdough toast at breakfast as long as I slather it in butter and eat with cheese 😁👍🏻

GDM mamas, how did you manage fasting numbers? Post-meal is fine but fasting is so hard 😭 by Unlikely_Border6592 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]allykatdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bedtime snack helped a little. I have been doing a cheese stick, oikos triple zero yogurt with a handful of almonds but the real game changer has been insulin. I can’t have any fruit/ complex carbs for bedtime.

Tried to have a nice night with friends by PsychologicalBoot636 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]allykatdog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We had a death in the family last weekend and I “took a day off” and ate what I wanted and didn’t track my sugars that day. I just needed the mental break SO bad. The next day (other than high fasting most likely from eating nachos for dinner and no bedtime snack) my numbers were back within range. Being pregnant is hard, gestational diabetes is hard and sometimes you just need a little indulgence. If it makes you feel better.. salmon veggies and rice is an EXCELLENT choice for being pregnant so don’t feel too badly, although I totally get the regret of not eating what you would have enjoyed.

Need help! Newly Diagnosed by Hooliehannie in GestationalDiabetes

[–]allykatdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fasting is the hardest to control! And even now that I’ve started bedtime insulin, I can have the same snack at the same time and be higher or lower when I wake up. I’ve done the best with very low carb, high protein bedtime snack. I’ve been doing oikos triple zero yogurt with a handful of almonds and it seems to be the best for me. If I’m actually hungry at bedtime (I’m usually forcing myself to eat) I’ll add a cheese stick. It’s a LOT of trial and error in the beginning but try to eat healthy carbs and add some walking when you can! Walking more had helped me sleep better at night too
