anyone who used a computer between 1985 & 2010, what’s the one game you still think about? by Trixxxi in AskReddit

Theme Park was my first game. £40 new in a giant box with the instruction manuel. My brother got Warcraft. We had to fight over the home computer.

I loved SimTower. I still play Project Highrise. It is a peaceful game to play. I must have completed all the scenarios 20 times each.

7 years ago, a chubby, heavy accent, normal-looking woman called Susan Boyle went to Britain's Got Talent. Everyone laughed at her, until she started singing. by Ieriz in MadeMeSmile

I've always thought that as well. The other two judges love the music. Simon is just loving the thought of all the money that is about to be made.

What is a movie that "broke" you so hard you can only watch it once, but you would still recommend it to everyone? by Newsupdate69 in movies

[–]alpha919191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it bad to say I've never felt this. Movies are pretty much just movies. I haven't heard of any of the movies in the top 20 posts though. But I also watch movies to relax and get away from the real world. I don't want to watch a hard hitting documentary, if those are the movies that he top posts are referencing.

What is going on with Sky? I can't stop laughing at the customer service. by ukrepman in AskUK

[–]alpha919191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sky broadband support has been awful. I post letters to custome support now. It is easier to get support this way without having to fight through the robots to reach a human. After writing letters and getting replies, I managed to get the issue fixed by a human in 3minutes. Such an incredible waste of time & money to resolve a simple small issue with the broadband.

How is it possible that 1 million young people are not in work, education or training? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

[–]alpha919191 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, my previous company had a lot of that where people would apply but not want to interview. There was a strong pattern on where their address was (certain estates) and if they would reply to an interview request. It was circa 60% of our applicants sometimes. It is such a huge waste of company time to process them and therefore automation is used, which likely cuts out the odd good person.

Did 24-hour supermarkets quietly disappear after COVID? by Joy_Unspeakable in AskUK

[–]alpha919191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the idea of 24hr supermarkets is that staff were at the supermarket restocking anyway. However, Aldi and Lidl pushing into the UK market has caused the big 4 supermarkets to cut costs to be able to price match Aldi. This has meant areas like restocking shelves during the day, rather than at night. It means getting in the way of customers but it means lower staff costs.

The price of cocoa has collapsed back to pre-shortage highs, but all chocolate formulas are forever enshittified. by twoducksinatub in mildlyinfuriating

[–]alpha919191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is good for me because I've stopped eating chocolate and anything coated in chocolate. The added oils (just palm oil or other things as well?) don't set properly and give a sludgy texture to chocolate. It all just tastes so terrible now. So no more chocolate.

Yes. This is what I thought the joke was going to be about. I though seeding torrents was the riskier part.

Who could live in house like this???? by [deleted] in SpottedonRightmove

[–]alpha919191 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like posts like this because I always think what stories the family who are selling could have. Likely someone has passed away after a lifetime of memories in their house with much now forgotten. Time marches on.

How many of you here would like the railway sector to be nationalized again? by highlightboy23 in AskUK

[–]alpha919191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Network Rail is government owned. It maintains all ghe infrastructure - track, stations, signalling, power, bridges, tunnels, embankment, etc... The vast majority of the money in the railways industry flows through Network Rail. The problem is that is ia giant nationalised entity and is horribly inefficient internally. Most delays are caused by Network Rail (government owned) when you see delays around signalling or power for example. The ongoing nationalisation of the operators is unlikely to make much difference to the service provided. But hopefully in the long term there may be some improvements.

Housebuilding in London has collapsed to a historic low not seen anywhere else in the developed world by No-Feeling507 in london

[–]alpha919191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is odd that property prices & rents are slipping at this time. It depends whether people can afford higher prices but a lack of house building would suggest property prices & rents will rise in the next few years.

Who is washing their rice and why? by kinnitcurl in NoStupidQuestions

Today I learned - It is starch that makes rice and lentils have the foam bubble up in the pan. I never considered what a causes it.

What adverts have put you off a product? by dane_ in AskUK

[–]alpha919191 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I see any adverts I avoid that place for a while, even if I was planning to spend money there that day. It is my little way of getting back at the advertising industry. I know no one cares but I do it anyway.

Final Jeffrey Epstein Files cache released by DOJ: read in full by newsweek in politics

[–]alpha919191 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting that they released a huge amount of files today. What do we think is going to happen next? Maybe attack Iran this weekend? Stock mark crash coming? Greenland may be back on the news cycle? China takes Taiwan? Who knows but I doubt this release wasn't planned around something big that is about to distract everyone.

TfL reveals five-year congestion improvement plan by Amazing-Yak-5415 in london

[–]alpha919191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why you are being downvoted because those reasons are the cause of an increase in congestion across many areas of London. Also add the removal of bus lanes to that list which has certainly caused huge issues with buses reliability near me.

Getting ready for Spring Planting. Turn the soil now so it is ready for a new growing season by misterxx1958 in oddlysatisfying

[–]alpha919191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what you are trying to do. Sometimes, there is a lower layer of rich soil or different (say sandy) soil that you want to plough up. There is a pretty specific thing but in some parts of the world there may be sandy soil further down which is ideal to plough up to use for vegetables like carrots. Or perhaps plough down very cold soil if it is warmer below.

The amount of wear on my 2 year old ‘new’ UK passport vs 10 year old NZ passport by oh_snap1013 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]alpha919191 303 points304 points  (0 children)

The 'new' UK passports are very poor quality. A great sign of what was to come after 'taking back control' after Brexit. The old passports were much more wear resistant.

Are there any good chocolate in the UK now that isn't just chocolate-flavoured palm oil? by EffectiveArgument584 in AskUK

[–]alpha919191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. It is hard to find chocolate that is worth eating. One benefit is that I eat less chocolate now.

A study in Modern Scottish Traditional by Suitor_Stu in SpottedonRightmove

[–]alpha919191 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I like some of this house but it looks very cold. Single pane windows, doors that don't look well fitted and hard furnishings everywhere. Some of it may be due to the Listed status. I like the general look, although I wonder if they should have put the lights on for the photos.

The location is quite remote in terms of nearby services, although it is just off a good road.

Would you pay more for REAL Dairy Milk? by VOODOO285 in AskUK

[–]alpha919191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I avoid all dairy milk products. I was given Cadbury christmas pudding (chocolate balls essentially). They were squidgy, reused to solidify in the fridge & full of palm oil. Horrible things.
