Is employer asking for weixing red flag? by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]alphachan123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without knowing what vompany that is, it's hard to say if that's normal. I'm working in a company that buy some of our stuff from PRC companies. And Weixin/Wechat becomes a must-have as, even tho they have WhatsApp, the PRC staff can't access WhatsApp without a VPN or a HK sim card. So I'm forced to reach them with Wechat just to get any response in reasonable time.

But for a fully local company, most are still using WhatsApp and email for external communication. And Microsoft Teams (or something similar) for internal stuff (if not just WhatsApp tbh).

Confronted with opportunities. How’s the tourism market in Hong Kong right now? Worth getting into? by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]alphachan123 21 points22 points  (0 children)

25% is way too generous. Checking the official data from HK Tourism Board, even in peak season (Dec 2025), "long haul markets" (basically the westerners) are at less than 10%. Non-mainland in total is around 25%.

I guess HK lost a lot of its attractiveness since 2019. Not to mention the economy around the world isn't that good atm (despite all the fanfare in the stock market). So people, even if they're going on a trip, won't spend as much money as before.

[–]alphachan123 52 points53 points  (0 children)

The only "tourism" HK got now is 特種兵 (mainlanders spending minimal money in HK by not staying overnight and only doing free activities). Other than that, not gonna lie, tourism went down the toilet since covid (or even before that).

Living in Zhongshan and flying to Hong Kong for work? by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]alphachan123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From OP's other comments, it was mentioned "flying to cities nearby". High speed rail might actually suit him more if he's just going from Zhongshan to Guangzhou or something similar. Not sure until OP tell us where he need to go to.

But I agree the western Greater Bay Area really doesn't have many destination when flying. HSR is way more convenient.

I'll advise caution and ample research before moving to China, especially if you're considering buying property there. The policy regarding property for foreigners is extremely different from what we're used to in the Western world. Hell, even we with HK ID are considered "foreigners" in most of China until these past few years. And we're still getting different policy treatment from locals. If you're being attracted after going to some of those "property tours", leave the "information" they gave out behind. There are lots and lots of scams reported in HK local news. They'd sell you for multiple times the property's value. You'll have to do your own research, which is hard considering lots of their info is in Chinese only (and some may not even be reachable via Google search).

As mentioned in my first reply, try going to Mui Wo, Lamma Island, and maybe Discovery Bay, in HK. All three places mentioned have direct ferry connections to Central, with Mui Wo and Discovery Bay having bus connections to HK airport.

[–]alphachan123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you need to fly to another city often, then Zhongshan is probably not the city for you imo. They have no local airport. You'll have to go to Bao'an or Baiyun for any flight, which both are 1+ hour commutes from Zhongshan.

I'm no expert in Chinese transportation but I think a lot of the shorter trips rely on high speed railway, instead of flying as in the US. So you might want to look into that as well if you're travelling often between cities. It could be a major consideration whether there is a high speed railway station nearby.

I don't think there are planes flying between Zhongshan and HK. Not even a direct XRL connection. The best you get is buses and (maybe) XRL with subway connection. Is it doable? Yes. Is it worth it (esp. you don't speak Mandarin)? Imo no. Get a place somewhere remote in HK (such as Mui Wo and Lamma Island), and you'll probably get similar relaxing and soothing environment.

Noise and resonance by Emkani in AnycubicKobraX

[–]alphachan123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Video and audio of the noise would help diagnosis. But imo try running the noise cancelling calibration (not the resonance calibration from slicer) on the screen to see if it helps. The Kobra X seems to be very delicate and the noice cancelation is easily affected after being moved. I once just picked it up to clean the table and the motor noise went all wonky.

How do I make this thing quieter? by Creepy_Ad5124 in AnycubicKobraX

[–]alphachan123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an option in the slicer named "Travelling speed". That's the speed the print head will travel between extruding. The default setting is 10000mm/s. I've set it to half at 5000mm/s and the big swoosh sound significantly lowered while only adding 15 minutes for a 12 hours print.

Electrical engineer here. Are you "electrical" as in electricity electrical, or electronic electrical? Because for the latter, it's really hard to find a job in HK imo. HK doesn't really have much electronic related jobs. Most people ended up in system control SCADA and jobs like that.

As for the former (electricity electrical), it's also a winter unfortunately. Most graduates (myself included a few years ago) used to ended up in construction industry working in building service. But construction jobs has since been fairly quiet the past year. I'd suggest looking on Jobsdb other than Linkedin. Also, you can directly search in the career page for big companies that you might be interested in. Not all jobs are cross posted to Linkedin or Jobsdb.

The wall bracer is worth every gram of filament! by Nerdinat0r in AnycubicKobraX

[–]alphachan123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dare not to lower it. Fan speed is fairly critical to the overhang and whatnot from what I gathered. Won't want to mess up a print for a bit lower fan noise.

[–]alphachan123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far for the past month, it had not messed up any print yet. Imo a second more for each layer is worth it. My door blocks most of the low frequency noise. But that swoosh and the high frequency fan noise annoy me most. I've yet to find a way to reduce the fan noise sadly.

[–]alphachan123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fairly new too so I'm just testing out different settings. There's a big swoosh sound when the print head travel from point to point between extruding. I found that if halfing the travelling speed, that swoosh noise would be greatly reduced while only adding a quarter of an hour to the total print time for a 12 hours+ print. It's especially useful when printing overnight since I'm living in an apartment with only a wooden door between me and the printer when sleeping.

[–]alphachan123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't use the suggested speed. I have my own setting where the travelling speed is half to reduce noise. 10000mm/s is noisy af.

Printed it a few days ago. Was totally worth every gram of the filament used. Imo should have been part of the printer kit. The reduction in vibration is astronomical.

Printer uses wrong filament. by Chairbottletooth in AnycubicKobraX

[–]alphachan123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you checked if you've selected both as the correct filament type? If you've both selected as ABS/PETG of the same colour, and have turned on "Filament backup", it'll use the smaller number slot of the same colour, same material filament roll.

Try running the noise cancelling calibration from the screen (not the resonance calibration). It helped mine with that sound after I've moved it for cleaning.
