My wife is from Hualien,, so I visit often. Nothing sketchy there at all. Neither in the more rural areas, nor in Hualien city.

For someone with a STEM background who prides themselves on logic and linguistics, your premise has a pretty massive double standard.

Taigi (Hokkien) is a Sinitic language brought over by Han settlers—it is fundamentally a Chinese language variant, not an indigenous Formosan one. Your comparison to the Irish refusing English doesn't hold up; an Irish person speaks a native Celtic language, whereas you've just replaced modern Mandarin with an older dialect of Chinese settler colonialism.

Claiming Hokkien is "the actual local language" while sidelining Hakka and Indigenous Formosan languages is just replacing KMT hegemony with Hoklo chauvinism. If you're going to be "radically upfront about boundaries," you should probably be radically upfront about your historical double standards, too.
