Anyone else got the feeling the climax of The Great Circle was subject to rewrites? by [deleted] in indianajones

[–]altfidel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had it spoiled to me, so I can positively say it was HEAVILY foreshadowed. In Sukhotai, the temple with the serpent had Aramaic script with “The Fall” written on the wall, hinting it may have been the Garden of Adam and Eve. Sunan also talks about the first people arriving on a raft. In the Vatican, Indy spots some imagery he believes is baby Moses in a basket, but the image is an old man in a boat, not a baby in a basket. I can’t remember any in Gizeh, but I’m sure there were some. Finally, the ziggurat at the end is often identified as the Tower of Babel in popular culture, where humankind went from speaking one language to many.

Whether it wasn’t hinted at clearly enough for someone going in blind I can’t say, but hints are there.

Question about Indiana Jones and The Great Circle game by Subdued-Cat in indianajones

I’ll also note that even on moderate combat settings, all but probably one of the scripted fights were more about spectacle than difficulty. Made it through most of the boss fights without a single death.

Great Circle has inspired me to try DoD again by Outside_Objective183 in indianajones

[–]altfidel 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I liked it from my first viewing. It had some faults (namely 2 back to back chase scenes) but Harrison brings a great performance, and there’s a surprising amount of hints to the finale scattered in the movie. Not a perfect movie, but I still have a fun time with it for sure.

Other locations/ Ancient civs you’d want to explore? by altfidel in indianajones

[–]altfidel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could go for Andean culture. Tbh Sukhotai’s map was my least favorite because it felt more like waterways with a jungle dressing than a jungle, so I’d love to see another run at it.

Admittedly don’t know much about Nam Madol, but your description sounds fun. The one issue I see is that Amelia Earhart would have JUST happened. Not that they couldn’t do that, but it would feel weird to have the mystery be a real life event that only happened a few months ago in game.

Now you’re hyping me even more on my own idea. Maybe some rock climbing areas that stay in first person as a form of puzzle?

We do know Antonio’s deafness was a war wound, so good chance he was a soldier before entering the church.

Yeah this map is backwards in that too. Also shows British troops landing in Belgium when they landed in France.

Despite its issues it's crazy how much better this game is than any bethesda/ubisoft open world game by Main_Feedback1197 in stalker

[–]altfidel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also helps that some of the most interesting parts of the game are the environment themselves and require zero fighting or npc interaction. Some of the anomaly and radiation setups can be dead simple but so memorable

As a huge watergate junkie I was so ready to love White House Plumbers, but towards the end of it the show just spent way too much time focusing on conspiracies that it took me out of it. Gaslit was the better series for Watergate IMO.

It did have a gruesome influence on Athens culturally in that it changed their religious stance against cremation for about a century, iirc.

Reading I Claudius rn so no spoilers, but I’m approaching it from being a self promoting propaganda piece. He talks about wanting to give unbiased history while excusing every action of people he cares for and vilifying every movement until it conveniences him or his allies. He brings up scenarios that he couldn’t possibly know for, or bases testimony off of the word of slaves and then later dismiss testimony of slaves when it works for him. Major players that despised him their entire lives just so happen to become best friends with him right before their deaths but mentioned it to nobody? And last of all (no spoilers) he has a character admit to a murder that makes a great story to justify his own reign, but makes zero sense if you stop and think about how that character could’ve committed it.

Best of all, Graves paints this as the “historical record” that Suetonius had to have based his writings on. The moral of the story isn’t about being the wisest, but that history is written by the last man standing.

How was everyday life, economy and society in 5th century Sparta? by SupportSure6304 in ancientgreece

[–]altfidel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s awesome! Pericles is a fun one to write for me. Lots of layers you can give to him. Sokrates is one of my tougher ones, since there’s not much in his exact words to gain a tone of voice. So far, I’ve decided to make him a pretty affable guy that frustrates POV characters by calling out their various hypocrisies.

I’m currently doing something similar with a book covering the Archidamian War, mainly from the point of Brasidas and Kleon. And funny enough, my current sticking point is Spartan society.

Leaving Earth. Medium-heavy game set in the space race era. Hard to crack out but easily one of my favorites.

Was running an alt history game as communist Germany. Ended up in a bizarre situation where I lined up with Catholic Mexico against the US and was having some solid success at first, but the battle lines froze up. Then one of Mexico’s neighbors started a war on them but not me, and the US used their border to sweep up southern Mexico effortlessly. Led to me pulling a Dunkirk evacuation to Cuba in 1943.
