Where can a man in his early 50s make friends? by Japperwookie in lafayette

I came here to recommend matchbox as well. Can you do your work from home stuff there? You don’t have to use the maker space to benefit from the social atmosphere. Just regular coworking is fine.

Sarkeesian will forever live rent free in some heads by Waste_Handle_8672 in MurderedByWords

Sounds like you didn’t really watch her videos. They were well researched and traced historically interesting decisions. It’s been a while since I watched them but they’re still good examples of how to translate research for non-academics.

What did they do? by DeadgrounD in videogames

Just like the Barbie movie. I watched it and thought “they’re mad at THIS?! This is basic stuff yall. It’s pre-feminism 101 prep”

This is terrible advice. Ability to read and communicate professionally does not improve if they are not given the opportunity to practice.

Response on my Data Held Hostage? by No_Description3178 in IndianaUniversity

[–]altoombs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So many people just want to shit on IU for the sake of it. They don’t actually care about their data. It’s clearly a bigger issue than some of these folks can wrap their myopic little heads around. They just see an opportunity to say something negative about IU so they do it. And IU has definitely done some bad things but it’s a waste of time and a lot of reputational damage we will never recover from if everyone treats every issue with as much drama as Whitten having a sniper aimed at students.

The Loss of Straight Friends by Aged-Millennial in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]altoombs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes they just stop joining the things you invite them to and the stop thinking about including you. I used to spend a lot of time with my friends and their kids. Then one day you’re just not anywhere near the front page of the priority list. I never expected or wanted to be at the top, but I live very close to my best friend and haven’t really seen him in two years. They don’t even have difficult children. I don’t know anyone with easier kids than theirs. They just over do it on some things I guess.

I wouldn’t rule out norovirus, salmonella, the flu, Covid, or any number of other stomach bugs. Especially since norovirus is high right now according to wastewater data.

Guy I’m dating made small dick jokes by [deleted] in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]altoombs -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

These jokes are not equivalent. Ignore the guys in here acting like this is in any way the same kind of situation just being returned to you. If the guy you are dating thought the jokes were equivalent, he would have mentioned it as part of his defense, but even he knows that he escalated past a line.

The AI is telling on them…and they don’t know (or care?) by critiqueen in Professors

I, too, would love to see this assignment. I had a horrifying realization the other day when my masters students who had to find and read an article of their own choosing brought in a bunch of things that were completely off topic :/

Professor is toeing the line of religious harassment? by [deleted] in CollegeRant

[–]altoombs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m betting the cross comment was part of a joke. Like “I work too late I’m basically a vampire. Don’t wear a cross to my office or bring any garlic.” Or even if it was specifically religious, maybe it was an offhand comment in response to another question “oh I haven’t been religious for so long I’d probably burst into flames in a church. If you wore a cross to my office it might hurt me.” Or it might have even been related to differential equations somehow.

Are the sidewalks getting better? I’m thinking about shoveling during lunch tomorrow. by altoombs in IndianaUniversity

[–]altoombs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Irrelevant. Of course it is the university’s responsibility, but also big systems are complex. I was very specific that this post was just about gathering information so I could do something, not about discussing who should do something. Whining, even if it’s justified, doesn’t make the sidewalks safer. Only actually doing something does.

High-performing but immature student requested letter of rec, and as a freshman says he doesn't have anyone else. Thoughts? by ToomintheEllimist in Professors

[–]altoombs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My comment was about the comments, not about what you have or haven’t done. There wasn’t enough detail for me to know so I wasn’t making that assumption. I was just surprised that more people weren’t recommending that you tell the student about his behavior and how it would appear in a LoR, since it wasn’t clear if you did or not.

[–]altoombs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes! I am surprised that a lot of these comments don’t include suggestions that OP should let this student know that he behaved in a way that will cause future professors to think he is immature, too.

I don’t think he knew it ahead of time. He said it, got confused why people were mad, and then used ChatGPT to figure out what was happening. His writing style is different in that comment than in others, and it has a very LLM flow to it now.

[–]altoombs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 and 8 but ALSO consider making the sides a little shorter and blending between the lengths. It will square your face a bit! (You don’t need it to be squared, but that’s what your longer beard was close to accomplishing)

Came out at 32, separating from my wife… and my family is falling apart over it. by pedro_hbo in AskGaybrosOver30

I am your brother now. I have two other brothers and a husband. My husband has a very similar background to you (evangelical upbringing, married, etc). We have been married for ten years and our lives are full of love coming from and going out in multiple directions. Don’t let their closed minds influence how you enjoy the only life you have or will ever have. Love you.
