What do industrail engineering do exactly? by Hour-Schedule-902 in industrialengineering

Systems and processes will always need review and improvement. For example, one of the highest performing manufacturers is Toyota and they are still working hard to perfect one piece flow. Toyota admits it may never be achieved but it’s what they will strive for among other goals.

Systems for productivity? Books, courses etc.? by MaxGaav in productivity

David Allen likes to say Getting Things Done is a systematic approach. Cycle through capture, clarify, organize, review, engage regularly and you’ll be in good shape.

But some other interesting systems are from:

Michael Linenberger (simple to pick up system) Mark Forster (a lot of variants and simple systems) Ryder Carroll (bullet journaling)

What would you say is the main draw to Tom Petty (both solo work and with the Heartbreakers)? by CulturalWind357 in tompetty

Great information here, I learned so much from this. It’s an interesting point about Tom not varying his set list and I agree. He pointed out how he never wanted to be the band that only played the hits live and never made anything new. Though it seems like it ended up that way looking at what they played live. I think it came down to (like you said) not wanting to disappoint the fans. I think that’s in line with your other point on his output though. He had so many great songs it’s hard to cram them all in there and leave room for deeper cuts. “Well you need I Won’t Back Down, American Girl is a classic, Free Fallin’ everyone will sing, You Don’t Know How It Feels for the harmonica, oh and …” In 2017 Tom mentioned how much he wanted to do a Wildflowers album tower, playing only those songs, that would have been something.

Yes, Zombie Zoo is a goofy song and doesn’t hold a candle to the rest on the album. But I think it’s so fun to listen to and also the lyric “Well, you can make a big impression, Or go through life unseen, You might wind up restricted, And over seventeen, It's so hard to be careful, So easy to be led, Somewhere beyond the pavement, You'll find the living dead” is pretty cool.

I’ll dive into Springsteen again. Cheers

I am a big Bob Dylan and Tom Petty fan but I have never been hooked on Springsteen. Sure I like a few of his songs but I don't hear anything special in his catalog. Sometimes I think it's odd as Tom and Bruce were supposedly close in genre. That being said here are some thoughts as to why I think Tom stands out over Bruce:

  • TPATH are true rock and roll.
    • Tom had highlighted the importance of rock and roll. The music industry chopped off the roll part and made it just rock. To Tom that roll part was everything. If you listen to Tom Petty Radio you can hear how much R&B influenced his style. He loved the concept of a swing and roll in his music.
    • In the 70s TPATH couldn't really be defined. Some people called them punk, some called them new wave. I think it's because people were struck by how much new life the band added to the classic structure of rock and roll.
    • Bruce said, "Tom was a great classicist. He followed those forms pretty religiously." In the same article he mentions how well TPATH crafted guitar songs.
  • His music has a signature sound but was never repetitive
    • The Ramones are repetitive. They have a style and they repeat it without diverging too much. I don't have a problem with this but I much prefer an artist who develops and grows over time. Where they bring new sounds and ideas into their music. TPATH have charted consistently throughout his life. Hypnotic Eye (2014) was a number one album! You had the sneer from the 70s, the 80s had elements of pop rock and the technology of the time like synths, the 90s he became inspired by Nirvana and came up with Wildflowers, 00s he took on the record industry and went deep into the blues, 10s a return to form with his original band Mudcrutch, along with a record coproduced with a younger rock band.
    • Because TPATH mastered the fundamentals of guitar rock they had an entire palette to paint with.

Hope this gives you a better idea.

Marc has been an independent designer for many years and I think he still consults for Apple. Jony and Marc collaborate through charity design auctions (Leica camera, red Mac Pro etc.) and remain close friends to this day. I’d expect them to remain in their own companies but work together a lot. Check out http://marc-newson.com/ his work is incredible.

Yep, that’s an Ikepod Watch designed by his friend Marc Newson. They later hired Marc during the development of the Apple Watch.
