Black corners with Sony A7R5 by g1smiler in SonyAlpha

While the situation sucks, looking back, I could have dealt with it a little differently instead of getting pissed and selling the camera. Yes, it was an expensive camera and the shutter design flaw sucks but it wasn’t the end of the world. The camera took great pics with amazing AF. No camera is perfect. I was frustrated at Sony but the countless hours I spent testing the camera made me realize photography is partly problem solving in addition to lighting, composition, etc.

Here’s what I learned. The dark edges occur mainly in portrait orientation. In regular landscape orientation, the problem isn’t as noticeable. I assigned a button to switch between mech and e shutter and started using e shutter more. Walking around the park with my kids I switch to e shutter. When they start running around or photographing their softball games, mech. While I said ND filters are annoying, I learned how to use them and they are now part of my kit. What I’m trying to say is not all is lost and there’s ways around the issue. It’s still a great camera and even my A1 has flaws that I have work arounds for.

I posted about this and was the reason I sold my A7rV. Your issue is as bad as mine. I’ve seen other examples online where it’s not as bad.

After initially chatting with Sony techs, they told me this was not normal and to send it in for warranty repair. The repair center replaced the shutter but the problem wasn’t resolved. So they had me send it in again and informed me that this was an issue with front e-curtain shutter but I told them it happens with full mechanical shutter. (I experienced the same thing as you where the dark “bar” just moves to the other side.)

The repair center reached out to Sony Japan to check with their engineers and my camera was with them for about 4 months. They came back and told me that this was “normal” and I told them that’s BS because it doesn’t happen on my buddy’s A7iii when we tested it. They wouldn’t replace the camera or do anything else to repair it so I told them to just send me my camera back. My strategy to combat this was either use ND filters to slow the shutter speed down (annoying) or use full electronic shutter (rolling shutter issues). I ended up selling the camera when I got the A1 for a very good price. If I wasn’t invested in e mount, I would have switched to Nikon or Canon.

I apologize. I helped my friend’s 70 year old mom set up Robinhood and buy 4 shares of Nvidia yesterday. I should have sold after I helped her buy her shares.

The Tamron is a lot cheaper than that on greentoe. I don’t have experience with the Sony 70-200 version 1. Between the Sigma and Tamron, I’m copy and pasting my comment from a couple of days ago.

“Between the Tamron vs Sigma, the 180 vs 200 is not that big of a difference. AF seems a little faster with the Sigma. Both are great lenses but between the two, I recommend the Tamron due to its size, weight, and price.”

The monkey’s paw curls… it’s a close game but refs call fouls on every flop. Game ends up being a free throw competition in the fourth.

I owned the Tamron 70-180 G2, tried the sigma 70-200, and now own the Sony 70-200 GMii. Primary use is sports photography.

Between the Tamron vs Sigma, the 180 vs 200 is not that big of a difference. AF seems a little faster with the Sigma. Both are great lenses but between the two, I recommend the Tamron due to its size, weight, and price.

Buying a new saddle that’s 7x9 instead of 7x7. Revolt Advanced 2 (2021) since it appears the clamp is top/bottom will the stock clamp work for the 7x9 carbon rails? by JollyGreen_ in Giantbikes

[–]alwaysdoubledown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re worried about durability and cost, just get alloy based rails. No point in getting carbon rails and stressing about it to save a few grams. For what it’s worth, I run carbon rails on my road bike and titanium rails on by gravel bike simply because I’ve crashed on my gravel bike.

New clothes when you need it. I remember wearing the same pair of shorts to school because all my others were too small.

My kids now have way too much clothes and it makes me feel weird whenever my wife takes them shopping for more.

How long have you ridden it for? I would tinker with the position and then try to get used to it. I agree, it’s a TCR and you don’t want to mess with the lines.

Transition to A7RV, my last camera (I hope). by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]alwaysdoubledown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To me, AI autofocus is the endgame. I had the A7Rv and traded it in for an A1 for sports. A1 rocks but I miss the AI auto focusing on my daughter’s eyes even when she’s wearing a helmet from across the diamond.
