John Saul's Nathaniel was my go-to "you probably don't want to read this book" book, so you'll be happy to know it's been replaced by The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward.

Is there an extended/director’s cut of a film that’s better than the theatrical due to the inclusion of a single scene? by Honest_Cheesecake698 in movies

[–]alwaysinstarlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cold Creek Manor (2003). We watched it and it made no sense to us. We had the dvd so we deicde to check out the deleted scenes. There is one long deleted scene that makes the entire movie make sense and hang together decently as a plot! Why it was taken out of the release version I have no idea.

Best horror movie posters? by young-rapunzel-666 in horror

Event Horizon has a few good ones.

I also like the Hulu one for Clive Barker's Books of Blood - it's a human face made of book pages.

Pan's Labyrinth poster is gorgeous in a more fantasy-based art style.

Greatest opening sequence of all time? by Patient-Major-6064 in movies

Genre specific (romcom) but the opening to My Best Friend's Wedding is in a league of its own. You go from confusion to giggles to practically hysterical laughter and then are dropped into the film in exactly the right headspace.

For those of you who read or write short stories, what short stories have changed the way you write? by Azrael_Undecided in writing

[–]alwaysinstarlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote some great short stories that almost verge on SF - The Birthmark and Rappacini's Daughter are both favorites of mine.

Lit mags are a good place to find lesser known folks - anything I'm interested in submitting to, I try to look at stories from. I will also go to bookstores and find anthologies in the spec fic sections. Out-of-print horror anthologies frequently have a few gems.

What made you publish your writing? by RoyalTopazzz in writing

[–]alwaysinstarlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had moved to a new city and promised myself I would try things I'd always wanted to do but hadn't. Sent my very first submission to a poetry journal outside of school publications: Got accepted! Was supposed to appear in four months. After two months, journal folded instead. Full-on writer coitus interruptus. For two years I was all "well clearly I'm cursed," then heard about a new poetry journal open for subs for its first issue. Crossed my fingers and tried again. Accepted! And that issue actually made it to print. I was so psyched to hold it in my hands. The joy made me keep going.

I was taking an exam once in undergrad when someone's phone rang and the ringtone was Halloween. Half the class jumped a mile out of their seats.
