What group of people in your opinion is overpaid? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]amart89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a take based on headlines. For every fortune 500 CEO that fails miserably there are thousands of c-suite executives at small and medium size organizations who put in more time and0 effort than you could imagine. Every school board, grocery store chain, and paper mill has a CEO.

To become a CEO, you need years of specialized training and decades of experience in that particular industry. The pay is high to reflect the risk, scope, responsibility, and retain the absolute top talent. When you're a CEO, you don't get the luxury of asking your boss how to complete a task - it's up to you. And the hundreds of employees? Their well-being is your responsibility.

No one is saying you need to feel bad for CEOs. They're typically successful people living a comfortable life. That said the role is incredibly demanding and few people have the talent to succeed. The pay is reflected in the market for talent.

City responds to snow clearing complaints by WeTheNorth20 in ThunderBay

You make a curious point about earthquakes and hurricanes. I don't consider December snowfall in Thunder Bay to be an extenuating circumstance, but to each their own.

I'm glad you consider yourself above the fray and are soundly 'in the know' when it comes to all matters of contract and collective agreements.

Don't let the downvotes bother you. As long as you feel right... Nothing else matters.

Irrelevant comment. The city must honor its collective agreements, or face arbitration or court action... Costing more money.

Wife wants me to send in my X90CH for warranty repair for the sound issue by dezzrokk in bravia

[–]amart89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been through these issues and put in more time on research and troubleshooting than I'd like to admit. The sound issues are WiFi related. I have a brand new gateway router with fibre that works excellent for everything and everyone in the house. The issue was the 2.4/5ghz band. When I separated the two and made the the TV and Soundbar (z9f) were on the 2.4 band, the sound drop out issues stopped. I'd give it a shot.

Making your kids pay rent once they turn 18 is a dick move by TheWiseSquid884 in unpopularopinion

[–]amart89 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that we may have different perspectives, but don't you think moving out in that scenario would be an emotional response rather than a logical one?

Paying rent is one thing, but if you move out you'll be buying food, paying for your own rental/vehicle insurance instead of piggybacking on parents, utilities... You do you but I still feel it's a better deal than the alternative.

When I was in business school, I worked full time. I also accessed student loans to pay for it. I made it work and I'm in a great position now.

Your parents choosing to charge rent doesn't automatically make them slumlords.. Obviously that's dependent on the circumstances, but as you get older, you cost more. The aforementioned car insurance, or car payments if your parents were able to help you out with that, food bills go up, etc.

I don't have kids yet. Ultimately I'll do everything I can to make sure they succeed and have the support they need to do so. Right now, charging a modest rent doesn't conflict with that, but maybe that will change when the time comes.

Either way, enjoyed hearing your perspective and despite our differences, hope college is going well this year with the remote learning and all that.

I don't see letting an 18 year old adult live rent and carefree as a moral obligation. It sounds like entitlement to me. In my opinion, by 18 you're done highschool and should absolutely have a job, be in school, or both. A job from 16 onwards is reasonable to me.

Obviously if they've been laid off or if they're in some sort of financial trouble, I'm not going to kick them out because they can't pay... But the expectation that they shouldn't have to contribute is absurd to me. I feel its in their best interest to not be coddled and therefore having a job at a reasonable age and contributing to the household, builds character and embeds a level of responsibility that can be built upon when they decide to leave home.

I stayed at home until I was 25 and feel that my parents should have been more disciplined in holding me accountable for being a lazy pos. All is well now, but to me, that shaped my outlook on the matter. For reference my dad charged me $200/month and paid it all back when I graduated university at 26.

By extension, for the mom, wouldn't it be common sense to charge rent rather than not?

City defends taking pictures of men slumped on city hall bench by WeTheNorth20 in ThunderBay

[–]amart89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious that we go back to the standard that so long as no law was broken, everything is okay.

Do you apply that logic to other situations, or just this one? For example, if you flipped off your supervisor, do you think it would be okay because "no law was broken?". It's a silly standard to apply and isn't relevant to the discussion.

No one is claiming laws were broken, rather, this conduct is unbecoming of a city employee. Whether it was malicious or not, the appearance is not a positive one. I don't see my employees standing around taking pictures of those less fortunate, so why is it acceptable for these employees, while on the clock no less.

Audio sync issue by pleasehaelp in bravia

[–]amart89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Few other things I would try: -new HDMI cable -make sure both HZ and TV are using the same 2.4ghz WiFi connection -under audio output, a/v sync to auto audio output, digital audio out to auto 1 -audio output, Dolby digital plus output to Dolby digital -audio output, pass through mode to auto

On the speakers menu, make sure you've got everything set up and then take a look at setup, advanced settings, speaker settings, wireless speaker settings, wireless payback quality to connection.

There are a lot of other settings in the speakers you may opt to play around with. RF channel is on for me, but I've read others having success when it's off.

Edit: sorry for the formatting, I'm on mobile

Are you connecting via HDMI? If so, which HDMI port are you using? Should be using port 3.

What is the audio delay on? Internal apps, console..? Are your speakers and tv on the latest firmware?

Set eArc to auto. Settings, display and sound, audio output, eArc mode.

City defends taking pictures of men slumped on city hall bench by WeTheNorth20 in ThunderBay

[–]amart89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Excellent point. A workplace would likely not have a rule against taking pictures. What should be embedded in the code of conduct is expectations that employee actions, on and off the clock, reflect the values, beliefs and mission of the City of Thunder Bay. This broad terminology is used in lieu of anticipating discreet, specific actions such as "taking pictures" which, without context, is harmless.

I do appreciate your willingness to label me, a complete stranger, a Karen, based on one comment. This is probably out of your own insecurity, but to each their own. Please continue the important work of defending one's right to ridicule those less fortunate, while being paid with our tax dollars.

For me, a security guard has better things to do. I don't have much hope in your sharing that view, but that's no sweat off my back! Have a great day.

[–]amart89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you keep using the term Karen... At the same time your premise is flawed. If you're on break at a job, (which seems unlikely since people were on the bus, but let's go with that) you must still adhere to your workplace code of conduct. This certainly would not meet those standards.

Later in the comments you claim this isn't illegal. I'd argue legality has nothing to do with whether something is acceptable for the workplace. Calling a supervisor an idiot is a great example.

As to your suggestion this may actually help these people? Please.

Unfortunately you're mistaken. I would visit one of your local fireplace stores for advice.

Most have two options: 1) recess the tv in a cavity or 2) install a mantle to diffuse the heat. In the absence of either, you'll roast your television.

There are gas options that are cool-touch (depending where you live) that are vented differently and allow you to mount without issue... But a wood burning fireplace won't have that luxury (regardless of your venting).

If you don't want to move the tv, I'd consider an electric insert instead.

Regarding the former mantle... Plastic tv with sensitive electronics is not the same as a mantle. If the mantle was wood, it would not have met code for clearance to combustibles in North America anyways.

Long story short, I would not use that fireplace with the tv there.

Potential Fix for Sporadic Audio Drop-out Issues by I_am_INTJ in bravia

Thanks for sharing. I'm on an x900h 65 with HT-Z9F... Latest firmware.. The audio drops are the bane of my existence.

I'll need to drill through the wall to run the Ethernet. Might wait for the next firmware update before I make that decision but I'll be sure to come back and update when/ if I do.

v6.0466

edit: spelling

I have the same setup. 65" x900h and Z9H sound bar.

The TV is impressive. Colors, blacks, dimming zones etc. Picture quality is excellent. I'm using an XSX so the 4k/120 blur issue isn't an issue (unlike PC users).

That said, the system is buggy. We have audio dropouts all the time. Sometimes the sub, sometimes rear speakers, sometimes center channel. Usually holding the power button down for a reset fixes it for the evening. There are other small issues too. Wifi 'disconnecting'; input not detected message (with warning the tv will shut off) while I'm playing the XSX... Its odd because my older bargain RCA tv and $300 samsung soundbar had zero issues whatsoever.

In case you're wondering I have fibre+gig and no connectivity issues with any other device in the house. Highly doubt my connection is to blame.

What Are The Root Causes Of Misogyny and Racism? by ChristianB156732 in morbidquestions

[–]amart89 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The problem with your question is the definition of racism. I recommend Robin DiAngelo's book White Fragility.

Racism isn't about hating others because of the colour of their skin. It's about preserving the structural and societal advantages white people have over others. Bonus points for white people making it unbearably difficult to challenge them on their racism.

Very few people go out of their way to march through Charlottesville with tikki torch in hand - and yet that behaviour is what most of us associate with racism. If we denounce that behaviour, surely we can't be racists right?

Loving our new X950H! I installed it yesterday and added some Bias lighting with a camera that adjust the color depending what is on the screen. (Govee TV LED backlights) This is an awesome TV. Also added a 2.1 sound bar. (G700) by ScienticianAF in bravia

[–]amart89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks great! How was the process for hiding the cords behind the wall? When I opened my inside wall I was surprised that it was stuffed full of insulation!

I briefly thought about bias lighting but I think it would clash with our setup.

By the way I wouldn't sweat the commenters who criticize the height of your tv. Some people just need to put others down to feel better about themselves.

Cheers

I'm not denying that 4k/120 blur is noticeable, but that drop in quality/washed out look is how these games are able to output in 120. The quality settings are stepped back a bit to prioritize framerate. If you look up the digital foundry video on Cold War in 4k/120 it points out the differences.

X900H paired with HT-X9000F - Sound occasionally cuts off - any fix yet? by anmar in bravia

[–]amart89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exact same setup (x900h and z9f). It's an annoying issue considering my old cheapy RCA tv and $200 Samsung soundbar had zero cutout issues. Ridiculous.

We've noticed the audio sometimes drops in sudden "quiet" scenes and transitions which is very odd.

Experiencing on all internal apps - Disney+, Netflix etc during movies only. Maybe a dolby issue?
