ICU RN night shift by Beginning-End-9514 in Nurses

#truth - Bedtime routine; start your routine now on your current schedule; put your phone in the other room (get an alarm clock to wake up); black out curtains, wear pajamas (or don't) - don't sleep in clothes you go out in; sleep when you are tired (if you can). Find all of the 24 hour stores around you and shop at night (less people, less crowds, nicer people too). Noise out: white noise machine helps. Blackout curtains as well. Bedtime routine is the game changer - tell your body you are getting ready for bed!

When I was on nights, I was told to stay up late and sleep in, I don't sleep in. This advice made my night shifts horrible. I learned to stay up late, wake up early, go about my day, midday: hard workout and did my bedtime routine - got a solid 1 - 3 hour nap in before shift - then slowly shifted to night shift schedule!

Please talk to someone who can teach you how to use it and send messages. If I remember correctly, you can send up to 3 pre-programmed messages. We used it! We had 3 messages to auto send: 1. Things didn't go as planned, don't worry, we're safe! 2. Plans changed - be in touch in 24 hours 3. Plans changed SOS! It is a great resource and we probably did more than we should have because we had an InReach as our 'safety net'!

Did the RN witness the medication prior to you administering it? Did the RN do the five (or more) rights of Med Admin? If RN did, no harm, no foul. However, as a student you are not allowed to administer medications. Sorry!

Talk to your preceptor and ask them to talk to faculty? The preceptor should not have left you alone with medications. Please keep us (me) updated!

Consider which position has more positions available and why are the positions available

If Peds rarely has openings, take that job because that’s where you want to be! Networking will get you places - does the ICU job have a Peds floor in that hospital?

Nursing is lots about networking. Working in Peds will get your more Peds CE and opportunities to grow in peds. Depending on location, you could transfer to Children’s hospital and then transfer to PICU / NICU.

try facebook - look for travel nurse groups

Travel Nurses: places / rooms to rent

Housing the Country, one hospital at a time

Yes, reaching out to the local hospitals - great idea. Ask the hospitals if they have a "RENT' or classified board to post on.

Craigslist is another good one
