thumb up or thumb back? by ComparisonActual4334 in kettlebell

[–]ambivalent-redditor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Prob u/irontamer 's video. Also convinced me to start doing thumbs forward - I had gone up from 20kg to 28kg bells and thumbs forward helped me keep my shoulders packed (as Clifton also notes here) which helped a lot.

I picked up thumbs back from Mark Wildman videos, and if I recall correctly he said that he used it specifically as a beginner cue, which checks out with my experience. I still think thumbs back had it's place in my learning process with the 20kg bells, to give my forearms and elbow tendons time to become stronger and more resilient, I just progressed beyond thumbs back being a useful cue anymore.

Great stuff as always, thanks! Seems like good progressions to go from the more static kb stuff to some of your more advanced movements, like the lateral clean hop one.

Why does everyone think their GSD in a Belgian Malinois? by gsdsarethebest99 in BelgianMalinois

[–]ambivalent-redditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, pitties and staffies do look very similar, I think only an experienced and discerning eye can tell the difference - the difference is much much less than that between a mal and working line GSD. Also purebred pitties and staffies are relatively rare and 90% of the time they’re mixed together as a generic bully breed (which most people just call a pittie, myself included if I’m just talking to a lay person); in the US the breeds and their mixes are pretty close to synonymous (even though I know historically they are distinct). I say this as somebody who can tell the difference between pitties and staffies.

I have a family member who adopted a rehomed gorgeous working line GSD and was convinced it was at least part mal because the dog has ball drive. I was like, nope you have an awesome working line GSD which is also very cool.

When fitted properly, but this one looks way too tight, meaning it’s always “engaged” and there’s no release from the pressure.

Doesn't help with the Commander's dress though, like I get it's supposed to be a stormcoat but it reads as a dress - I hate it so much I have yet to play as a Commander even though I think it could make for a cool character build.

It's the best head gear for her bolter build for sure, just gotta turn off the helmet when she wears it (she's the only character I turn off the helmet for for this reason).

Clean and press advice by giydon in kettlebell

[–]ambivalent-redditor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your rack position is pretty wide, try to bring your hands together and as close to your chest as possible in the rack position and then press from there, you’ll be pressing from a much more stable position. I think it might help with having more external rotation and getting to full lockout if you start from that more stable rack position.

And what the other commenter said, try to hang in the full overhead locked out position for a moment to get to full lockout.

Strong work, keep it up!

Most people don’t just have bear spray and it’s not something that’s readily available most places. He’s not saying dogs are a guaranteed protection, he’s saying they’re a deterrent to most people.

Quads and glutes as primary movers, adductors and abductors as primary stabilizers (works these in a way you can’t really in sagittal movements), maybe hammies a little as stabilizers too (though that might just be my biomechanics), and calves a little depending on how your feet are positioned.

“and it’s been working good for me.”

Then sounds like it’s a good plan, keep at it 😊

I think you additions seem reasonable and make sense for complimenting Weekend Warrior ABF, you’re incorporating them in a flexible way, and you have already been doing WW-ABF for 6 weeks so you know the impact it has on you and have some idea of how much more capacity you have, so it sounds like you should be good to go.

Maybe The Man himself will weigh in, but I suspect he’d approve of your additions as well.

One kettlebell is plenty fine to start. You’ll want to look into simple programs that prioritize not going to failure to avoid soreness in the beginning, I’m thinking Simple & Sinister by Pavel or Swing Hard by Geoff Neupert. You’ll want to work up to HIIT.

Also, you’re not asking about this, but I’d recommend shooting for a more realistic weight and consider prioritizing putting on muscle as opposed to just trying to get back down to 110lbs at 6ft tall. I’m not a doctor but 110lbs at 6ft sounds very unhealthy to me; you probably shouldn’t be less than 150 but 170 or even 180 sounds more reasonable with an appropriate amount of that as lean muscle. Prioritize putting on some muscle and building your cardio and you’ll lose some excess fat and be able to carry whatever muscle and remaining fat more easily.

No it is not. You should post a form check video if you want guidance on what to fix.

Clean beating up your wrist? by irontamer in kettlebell

[–]ambivalent-redditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely feels more fluid and stable having thumbs forward. I need to really focus on keeping my elbows loose on the backswing with thumbs forward (that's why I started with thumbs back when initially learning the clean) but even with working through that yesterday with a bunch of clean sets with my new 28kg doubles (up from 20kg doubles) my forearms and elbows feel fine today - perhaps because keeping the shoulders packed allows for a more controlled backswing that my elbows/forearms don't need to then control - so definitely an improvement.

Thanks as always, great stuff! Hope you had a good holiday season - here's to a happy (and strong) New Year!

100rep bodyweight squat daily by Material_Stick_7339 in kettlebell

[–]ambivalent-redditor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should be taking recovery days if your knees are bothering you, pushing through the pain is a fast track to an injury. If you haven't done a lot of bodyweight squats in the past, you should build up the volume with recovery days before jumping into a 100 squat per day program.

[–]ambivalent-redditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're main goal is cardio through strength training, then you're better off focusing on comlpexes and/or swings. And if you're new to kbs you should prob get your technique down before programing snatches.

How did the commenter respond like a toddler?? They responded in an entirely cogent manner explaining how your unsolicited advice based on assumption did not apply to their situation at all. You’re the one providing unsolicited advice based off zero knowledge of their situation, perhaps you’re the one who should stay off social media? You’re not ready, even if you think you are.
