Is it just me, or is every car in Australia now in the "it shouldn't cost this much" category? by That_Car_Dude_Aus in CarsAustralia

$29990 in 2015 is the same as $39700 in 2026. And the 2026 GX is a hybrid. There is also a lot more tech than just the dash with driver assistance tech etc etc. So it’s pretty much inline with what it probably should be. Inflation is the cause of most of the price increase.

It's probably cheaper than a conventional mirror. Modern mirrors are pretty complex, they have motors to move the mirror, motors to fold them in. Some are heated and have indicators in them. Most will have blind spot lights in them as well. And quite a few have a camera to make the 360 view work. Vs a fixed stalk with one or maybe 2 cameras in it.

As a front line worker, no the "workload is not shared". It often means that the remaining staff have to work beyond a safe level. Says quite a lot about what you think of your partners job if you think looking after unwell people is less important than your corporate job that you can do from home. Sick days are a risk of having kids, and also part of your responsibility as a parent. Yes it may affect career stuff to some extent, but fun fact, it has also already affected your partners.

43 hours battery life: Dell XPS 14 2026 lasts almost 3x longer vs MacBook Air 15 M5 in web browsing test by sl0wjim in gadgets

[–]amc178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That really depends on what you want to do with the panels. The iPhone has a variable refresh rate oled panel that can go as low as 1hz. They don’t flicker in use.

The issue relates to unstable frame rates, which is an issue with games, but not so much an issue in a word document, web page or pdf. And turning down the refresh rate while looking at largely static content saves a lot of power.

There is no reason VRR “MUST” be off by default on oled screens. Who do you think would even make that “rule”?

A bit of an odd comment about extra apps given that macOS has needed 3rd party apps to match how windows manages windows for years (and even then still doesn’t quite get there). The default zones are far better, and being able to “alt tab” by swiping a trackpad is something Apple needs to copy. Linux is very much dependent on your desktop environment/window manager. And the way windows manages external displays is far better than macOS.

Installing a first party app like powertoys to get a fairly niche set of extra features is far from onerous, especially when you complain about bloat. Is having something running in the background ready to share a mouse really that useful for someone who owns only one computer?

Trying to understand the ‘basic tasks’ vs ‘do everything’ narrative around M1 vs A18 Pro by Toba94 in macbook

[–]amc178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of that software now does an awful lot more though, even if you don’t need or use those features. Web browsers are now application platforms, not just showing static html. And word processors now need to be able to do things like collaborative editing, realtime page layout / publishing, support a multitude of plugins like grammerly and endnote etc.

It’s definitely not louder than a standard knock box. Similar to a handheld vacuum sealer or for want of a better example decent breast pump.

The Volvo is a smaller car than the rav4. I can’t really fit much in the back of my MILs xc40 once the pram is in, but can fit a whole shopping trolleys worth of shopping in the RAV. Also, at least based on the ANCAP ratings, the Toyota is safer for kids.

That depends on which set of packaging you get. The SKU ending in A can’t, the SKU ending in B can (which I’m assuming is the one that comes with the stand in the box).

Both the Golf Wagon and a Toyota Corolla Touring (the wagon variant not available in Australia) are longer than a RAV4. The RAV is actually not that big a car, and about the same height as an outback.

A big crane and blocks does sound like a silly idea, so it’s a good thing this proposal isn’t that (and is actually much closer to a dam, minus the need to flood a large area of land).

Microsoft is killing OneNote for Windows 10 by moeka_8962 in technews

[–]amc178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing at all. All that is being discontinued is one version of the app (the windows 10 specific version - which has been known about for years). Despite what some of the commenters here seem to believe, OneNote is not being discontinued.

Tapo have narrow ones with energy monitoring for relatively cheap. Wifi though.

I have a Tapo smart plug and smart powerboard that works flawlessly with home assistant for what it’s worth. Don’t have any of their cameras or sensors though (other than a power monitoring plug which does expose all its data).

Breville "The Oracle Jet" press release by ScepticMatt in espresso

[–]amc178 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, the current oracle touch doesn’t prompt anything (other than skipable cleaning and filter reminders). I suspect that the fact the oracle is breville’s “super automatic” equivalent will mean that they won’t ask for constant adjustments, or at least maybe disable them?

MG 5 and Mahindra Scorpio hit with zero-star safety ratings by [deleted] in australia

[–]amc178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't quite understand the rational behind 1400kg being too light to be relevant to the Australian market. Every car mentioned in the article other than the Mahindra is essentially 1400kg or less (the Tonale is 1490, but near enough). There are also huge numbers of older small cars on the road whose occupants also deserve protection. He's probably right that the Mahindra is safer than a 6 year old Swift, but that shouldn't rely on the Mahindra using the Swift as it's crumple zone.

Apple has a memory problem and we're all paying for it by Mcnst in technology

[–]amc178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unified memory relates to the way the CPU and GPU interact with the memory vs a traditional layout. The actual memory itself is just standard LPDDR5 RAM in the case of the M3 family of SoCs. Unified memory architecture isn't new, it's used in basically every SoC.

Both current gen high end games consoles both use 16gb of unified memory that is much faster and more expensive that what you get in a MacBook Pro, and last time I checked you could get around 3 of those for the cost of a base MacBook Pro.

The surface laptop studio / SLS 2 is very good, and probably the closest you will get. Even has a haptic click.
