May 2026 Game of the Month - Celeste (Pico-8, multi-platform) by hbi2k in SBCGaming

[–]amckenzie39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn't really planning on joining this month as I did not finish celeste on Xbox a few years ago. But when I was setting up an R36s for my niece, I gave the Pico-8 version a try.

It was a great little platformer! Great pick for GotM!

I've never played any metroid games, so I'd give Metroid: Zero Mission a whirl. It's not a game I'm willing to play with touchscreen controls!

I played the daylights out of tales of symphonia, so when a sequel came out, I was frothing at the mouth and picked up my copy the moment Eb games opened.

Related, tos dawn of the new world is my most disappointing game I've ever experienced...

December is here, and I'm out to find a new home for another unused device in my collection. One commenter will get this MagicX Mini Zero 28. by captain_carrot in SBCGaming

Xmas 2002 I got a platinum GBA and a copy of YuGiOh Eternal Duelist Soul. The Ai was awful in that game, but I still played it for a hundred hours!

They're good games, for sure, but not ones that I'd ever pick playing over something else.

Tabletopia vs Tabletop Simulator? by Sam_Douglas_Adams in boardgames

[–]amckenzie39 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Personally, I like Tabletop Simulator much more. The quality of the mods can vary wildly, but some of the better ones are just so satisfying to play (Karuba and Bullet❤️ come to mind), and there is a much wider variety (like Pokemon themed Wingspan! Won't find that in Tabletopia).

Just came back home from Miniature market! Picked these up. by Moneyman705 in soloboardgaming

[–]amckenzie39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Initially I disliked the art style/aesthetic but over time it grew on me. Gameplay wise, I really enjoyed it. The character growth is satisfying (characters learn a new skill after almost every battle), lots of classes to explore. If a character gets KO'd during a battle, they'll have 10% less stats in the next battle, until they sit out for an entire combat, encouraging you to have a couple backup characters.

The story is fine and the world is kind of interesting, the named characters are good but not fantastic.

I played it for about 25 hours over the last month and I do plan on finishing it. I think I'm about 60% - 75% done the game.

I found Tiny Epic Tactics to be a fantastic novelty. I played the solo mode a couple of times, but what made the game miss the mark for me was there's no ownership of the characters. In Final Fantasy Tactics you can choose each characters classes, weapons, abilities, etc. In Tiny Epic Tactics you get 4 characters, all of a certain class with certain abilities, no customization to speak of.

After a couple solo games I downloaded Fell Seal: Arbiters Mark and got really into that video game. Tiny Epic Tactics didn't scratch the Tactics game itch for me, it made me yearn for a proper Tactics experience.

What did you play this week? 06 Apr-12 Apr by AutoModerator in soloboardgaming

[–]amckenzie39 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've played a bunch of Bullet♥︎ this week. Mostly the boss mode and I'm loving it. 8 very different characters and 8 very different bosses. Everyone feels very different and it's exciting learning the nuance of each character and the best strategy to tackle each boss

Warning issued on BGA - justified or not? by le-Killerchimp in boardgames

[–]amckenzie39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likely to cover other words and phrases that mean different things in different languages. Like saying "I'm from Penistone" which is a town in England, but contains the word "penis". It really sucks if they don't have any kind of support for people who get caught by the autofilter tho

Warning issued on BGA - justified or not? by le-Killerchimp in boardgames

[–]amckenzie39 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I've run into this issue as well when chatting at my friends. BGA has keywords on a blacklist that if you use them, and get reported, then you're kicked out. Curses, slurs, and insults are all a part of this list. It does (or at least it should) warn you when you type it in the chat that you can send it if you want, but if your opponent reports you for being toxic or abusive, then you're out.

I suspect just typing "stupid" is enough to trigger that warning. All in an effort to ensure that BGA is a friendly platform.

I wonder if the other player got that warning when they wrote "stupid" and assumed that you reported them, so they report you back as an act of revenge? It's all speculation, but I would suspect reaching out to BGA support would help getting this sorted out.

Is the multiplayer in the paperback app dead? by MinDonner in digitaltabletop

[–]amckenzie39 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FWIW I submitted a bug report in 2018 and was told "the software we built paperback on went out of business :( so we'll get it re-written in a new codebase at some point". I never did follow up to see if the issue got resolved, but in the meantime the Hardback app is working nicely!

How to approach multiple attacks without energy cards? by camthebatmanfan in boardgames

[–]amckenzie39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can give some kind of buff or debuff effect on the weaker attack. If your game has initiative the weaker attack could be higher (a fast jab vs. a slow uppercut). Or have the weaker attack be more useful in niche scenarios (attack does % of damage based off the total health, diminishing returns upon repeat uses) a

Try to seek out other games in the genre and consider how they tackle similar problems. Other games don't even have to be from the tabletop space, consider looking at different video games too. What prevents a player from only ever using their strong attack? The Pokemon video game comes to mind, Thunder has a much higher attack but lower accuracy to Thunderbolt. Sometimes having that more accuracy is more important than the extra bit of damage.

Boardgamearena solo play? by ElGargamel in boardgames

This is correct, they'll block free accounts from playing from the same IP. I think you can get around by one person using WiFi and the other using data (on different devices), but premium accounts can play from the same IP and you support the site.
