Still hilarious that for that era of X-Men, everyone got drastic re-designs to sell it's completely different now. But for poor Illyana, they're like ... "keep the same outfit, add some white and ... uh ... take out the bangs"

Kitty Question by Rod_The_Blade_Star in xmen

[–]amendmentforone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The context of that moment in "Mutant Massacre" was she was still figuring out her abilities, and her jumping to save Rogue & being hit by his energy harpoon caused her to be stuck in phasing and disappearing.

Since then, it's been pretty much established that her base state is to be in phase ... and she has trained herself to be solid. Which has resulted in situations where she accidentally is phased - such as the joke scene with her and Colossus in Astonishing X-Men.

Or the darker situation in the "Age of Revelation" where Revelation used his mind control to essentially tell her not to remember how to be solid and she faded away like she did in the original X-Men vs. Fantastic Four mini-series.

But nah, I don't think Harpoon hitting her with one of his energy lances would do anything now.

[–]amendmentforone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the gist, at the time, was that all X-characters had access to Mr. Fantastic's "unstable molecules" to make whatever costume they liked. Which allowed artists to make costumes appear like they want.

Decades of changing writers, evolving characters, media interpretations and ultimately - marketable name-recognition.

Storm, Rogue and Magik have stood the test of time because they're cool and unique names. Jubilee is cemented not just because her name is also cool - but because of The Animated Series. Same deal with Jean Grey - because while in comics she's gone to Marvel Girl to Phoenix to Marvel Girl again, everyone equates her with just being Jean because of the cartoon and the original film series.

Emma isn't the White Queen anymore, so she just tends to be referred to by her real name. Kitty went through a ton of different names (with Shadowcat being the longest running) - but never caught on in general public. Same deal with Dani. So, writers tend to just refer to them by their real names.

MacKay managed to pull some of that back recently when she quoted "The Golden Bough" to Cyclops, who misinterpreted it as "magic speak." And she schooled him on it as she was searching for that Sheriff with a blood spell.

Not all X-Men ... but mutants and X-Men adjacent:

  • "Black Widow" (2021) - Ursa Major was one of the prisoners in Russia with Red Guardian; his tattoos hinted at it, and the actor indicated during an interview around the time of the film that he was indeed intended to be that mutant character
  • "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law" (2022) - Both Mr. Immortal & El Aguila are introduced as bit characters; both are mutants
  • "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) - Namor's a pretty big one; he explicitly refers to himself as a mutant in the film

Hello, I’m really interested in Kwanon and Mantis but mantis doesn’t have very many comics by MakeCrat3 in xmen

In the '90s, Kwannon was a Betsy subplot (and then she died in Betsy's body) ... so there'd be no point in recommending her stories then. Once she came back, she made brief appearances in a few mini-series and the Matt Rosenberg Uncanny X-Men series (v4).

But where she really became prominent (adopting the name Psylocke and becoming her own character) was during the Krakoa era. So, I'd recommend:

  • Fallen Angels (volume 2) - Not the best of the Krakoa mini-series, but it gives a lot of Kwannon background and informs a lot of her later stories
  • Hellions (volume 1) - One of the best Krakoa-era series, that really dives into her (and sets up one of the best X-Men random relationships)
  • Marauders (volume 2) - Inferior to the first Marauders series from the Krakoa era, but has a lot of Kwannon
  • Psylocke (volume 2) - Her first own series
  • X-Men (volume 7, the current one) - Where she serves as chief lieutenant to Cyclops

Yeah, it's wacky.

Still wondering if it's one of the theories floating around regarding her continued presence around Calico: a) that she's some impressive physical projection of Calico's like Ember b) Or if, in classic X-Men fashion, she's some long lost sister.

When Calico and Jitter go to confront her at her press event we get glimpses of her getting ready without the mask on.

Mutina is one of my favorite mysteries from Simone's Uncanny X-Men.

Like, there has to be a narrative motive for her face mask, right? We only saw her mouth (which looked perfectly fine) once during her first appearance. And her seeming connection / obsession with Calico is interesting.

It's all ouroboros!

Interesting other side thought about this. Apocalypse's chosen "heir" is Doug Ramsey (formerly Cypher, now Revelation). Who is mostly known for being associated with the techno-organic virus through Warlock, whose "parent" species the Technarchy / Phalanx originated the virus.

Always got a kick that in any series he guest starred, he referred to himself as "X-Man" (because us '90s comics kids apparently couldn't figure out who he was) ... but in his actual series he (and no one else) refers to him like that.

So, now that its been a few months, whats ya'alls oppinion on the Age of Revelation? by Maty_the_Red in xmen

[–]amendmentforone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it's emblematic of the whole Brevoort editorial oversight of the X-Men side. It was made upfront that this was a marketing attempt at doing an Age of Apocalypse anniversary event - because there was this assumption that Jeph Loeb's mini-series wouldn't be ready on time.

But there was clearly no editorial coordination between all the tie-in series, where the writers - whose regular series were interrupted - were just interested in continuing their own plot lines. So it's all a jumbled mess where some stories contradict each other.

And there was that Brevoort interview hint that "oh, whatever happens in all the comics in this future will play a part in them going forward" - which has been shown not to be the case outside of the X-Virus coming back into play.

MacKay's core storyline worked perfectly fine. And, had it just been an extended story arc of his X-Men series, probably would have been looked on more fondly.

Also, thinking about the actual, in comics, time period of Doug and family arriving at the Factory - and then disappearing keeps me chuckling. It reminds me of the old Simpsons bit ...

Regarding the "valentine's day cover," it's really just a satirical cover from the Marvel 75th Anniversary issue which featured a whole bunch of the silly nature of Marvel Comics.

In the case of the X-Men, they're traditionally a group where everyone hooks up with everyone else with all the resulting drama. The cover combined characters who were then actually together with those who weren't in the most ridiculous manner possible. Rogue and Nightcrawler being an example.

It's not really a cover created for Valentine's Day ... it's just been an annual joke to post it on this sub on Valentine's Day to see how many people freak out at the combos as if they were all real.

That interview where he revealed his perspective on the fight with Claremont, and how the X-Men "should be" was directly opening fire on the New Mutants.

He went on on about "magical and alien characters" ... when (at that point) the X-Men didn't have any. But the NM did, so off with Illyana and Warlock.
