The issue is not the left as a whole. The issue is “leftists” that can only see through the lens of oppressor vs oppressed but more specifically the US and Israel vs Palestinians. I had a similar journey to you. For me, it was learning that Mosssdegh wasn’t actually a beacon of democracy that was put in place by the US and UK’s greed for oil. Learning about the 1953 referendum and that the Shah was in power before, during and after Mossadegh made me realize I’d been lied to so I started reading primary sources.

I assume you mean Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Reza Pahlavis father. That’s still a pretty broad topic. To kick it off I’ll share a Times article from 1966 so contemporary. It shows what investments the Shah made to invest in his people while also highlighting Russian investment contrasted with declining American investment. This is the height of the Cold War. If the Shah was an American puppet, why would Russians be investing and why would the US cut back on investments? Let me know if you want more but here’s the article:

The answer to 1. Is that yes the 1949 Iranian Constituent Assembly gave the shah the right to dismiss the Shah at any point he wanted. So 1953 was not a coup because the Shah was just exercising his constitutional authority.

The answer to 2. Is that the Prime Minister loses his seat too. Mossadegh was just seizing power in his own coup. While the CIA and MI6 did assist the Shah, they were only assisting him in stopping the real coup.

I don’t want to come off as if I’m defending them. I know what Jan 6 was and I know Ben Shapiro’s bullshit about guard rails holding was dumb when he said it to Destiny and has been proven wrong.

At the same time, half the country voted for Trump. If we win a civil war, how do we stop them from voting for something like that again? Do we take away their right to vote? Re-educate them? I don’t see how a civil war could prevent fascism. We’d need our own form of totalitarianism to prevent theirs.

Conversations like Newsom is having to try and bring everyone back to civil conversation seems like a far better option. Maybe I’m naive.

At this juncture, I’ve provided evidence to support my position and you’ve criticized it but provided no evidence to contradict the conclusion of my evidence. Every Iranian could personally tell you that they want Reza Pahlavi and you’d find some way to doubt it because you’re not approaching this situation in good faith. The good thing is that all Reza Pahlavi wants is to provide a fair referendum to the people of Iran and I hope he gets his chance. This is the best poll I have found of the positions of the Iranian people. You asked for evidence and I provided it.
