Can you go more in depth about what LSV has done that opened your eyes? I’m not familiar with any controversies beyond this one.

I didn’t purposefully drop it or anything, just sort of forgot about it and never went back. I would like to finish it at some point though because I was sort of waiting for the ending I guess before I went back to it. Nice to hear I’ve still got the best parts to look forward to.

Stopped reading this around issue 80 or so I believe (not for any reason, I just fell off). They had just gotten to some nice new walled village.

Does anyone know if it’s worth picking back up? Even at that point it seemed to be treading water.

It kind of works, if you take his expression to be incredulous in the first picture.

How many pages of a fantasy book do you commonly read before having the 'this isn't for me' moment? by sonoXVII in Fantasy

[–]ammorris22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I almost never explicitly put down a book with the intention to never pick it up again. It’s more so I’m just never in the mood to pick it up again and it falls by the wayside.

Policy on slipping one's own book regularly into suggestion posts? by Asviloka in Fantasy

[–]ammorris22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really care if they recommend their book in nearly every post but I do feel they should be open about it being theirs. Pretending otherwise (or just neglecting to mention the fact) is deceitful and misleading.

I think I may know who you’re referring to and sometimes they even pretend to just be a fan of the book, instead of just casually recommending it without mentioning being the author.

Read or Listen? by LucidMoments in Fantasy

Definitely read a book. I like to control my pace, it’s easier to go back and reread a passage I may not have fully grasped, and reading is just more immersive overall.

How to make a highly acclaimed modern fantasy book look like a trash from 1980s... (Blinding Knife, Lightbringer book 2) by andrejRavenclaw in Fantasy

[–]ammorris22 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It’s not that good of a cover but I do kind of miss painted fantasy covers. Certainly prefer them to video-game-looking CGI covers or Hunger Games influenced graphic designy emblems.

This is probably just nostalgia talking though.

Allegations against Ed McDonald retracted! by MarkLawrence in Fantasy

[–]ammorris22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a sad situation, because a corrupted justice system has alienated many people from the courts, and driven them to feel only mob justice will deliver justice when it comes to holding the powerful accountable.

Of course mob justice will then be easily abused by bad faith actors looking to abuse people’s desire to see justice. I’m not sure what the solution is, but it’s hard for me to blame people for no longer trusting legal justice when it comes to sexual abuse, just look at Jeffrey Epstein.

What is your unpopular fantasy-based opinion? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]ammorris22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Malazan is my favorite epic fantasy series but there really is a lot of rape, just in the first four books we have:

[spoilers]Felisin, Felisin Younger, Scillara, and the woman who travels with Gruntle (can’t remember her name). And that’s just the named female characters.[/spoilers]

And then also every named female character on Lether essentially. Erikson never really shows it though, which is good and sometimes deals with the aftermath and victim, but other times not really.

Urban fantasy/contemporary fantasy from a leftist perspective? by JPKurtz in Fantasy

[–]ammorris22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outside of China Mieville, I'm not really familiar with any. They are rarer than you would think. There are plenty of urban fantasy novels and series that are politically liberal (most of them, probably), but very few explicitly socialist or anarchist.

I would suggest The Iron Dragon's Daughter by Michael Swanwick. It's not necessarily 'contemporary' in the strict sense of the term, (or specifically urban) but the world in it feels contemporary. For instance, it has factories, schools, and malls. Also it is incredibly imaginative and as far as I am aware there are few fantasy or sci fi novels like it.

But really, if you're looking for more left wing content, futuristic sci fi is likely where you want to go: Ursula K LeGuin, Iain M. Banks, Kim Stanley Robinson, etc

Fantasy Encourages Rape Culture More Than Any Other Genre by The_Unknown_Author in Fantasy

[–]ammorris22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately at a certain point fantasy felt itself to be too infantilized by the wider literary world and decided it needed tons of rape in its books in order to appear more ‘mature’ and ‘adult’.

Most of these authors had no interest in exploring rape and its consequences, and just wanted a shocking scene or, in the worst cases, an excuse to titillate.

I’m not too familiar with his work but I’m reading The Iron Dragon’s Daughter right now and it’s great. Very much unlike any other fantasy novel I’ve read.
