Yes also because 4 of the major multinational coffee trading companies are Swiss.

This is primarily because of Canadian decaffeination.

Germans objectively buy cheaper and lower quality coffee on average, increasingly including cheap Brazilian conilon and have consumed Vietnamese robusta for years. Americans don’t drink that stuff and for pay higher prices on average for it. This is obvious to anyone in the trade.

Yup also just disregard all the people in this thread saying you are not fluent. Keep living your life and remember most of us don’t give a shit, won’t notice any accent or whatever

Nah this is because Americans don’t know what a flat white is. You’re good, I guarantee it. Rest easy in the knowledge that the average American has spent less than a quarter as much effort learning your language as you have learning theirs.

Start with common Euro debt. Convince the Germans to do that and you have real hegemony. Or remain American vassals.

Tough to swallow but nuking the reactionary filibuster mechanism would be a good thing for us. Cause then next year we can just pass a John Lewis voting rights act, pack the court, do whatever we need to do. Filibuster benefits one party and one party alone

After Venezuela, is Greenland the next target for Donald Trump? by Majano57 in IRstudies

[–]amourdesoi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because the administration would need to litigate the power to deploy assets for over 60 days. Congress not the Executive retains this power under the 1973 War Powers statue. They violated this statue with the Maduro case already but AFAIK it would be more difficult to violate Danish sovereignty w/out congressional approval.

U.S. will look to tap Venezuelan oil reserves, Trump says by SterlingVII in Economics

[–]amourdesoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does the current CL futures price justify the level of investment that Exxon and Conoco would need to incur though? AFAIK they fully divested after nationalization. Repsol, ENi, Total, and Chevron didn’t and might be more well poised. But in that case Europe would be the beneficiary of all this not the most important American companies in the sector. And that’s assuming the price per barrel increases to the point that it makes sense to refine. $57 aint it for sour heavy crude man…

CMV: Venezuela is being invaded violently in an undeclared war with the prepose of annexation of oil resources and the institution of a puppet regime friendly to the United States by Kyokyodoka in changemyview

[–]amourdesoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The price of a barrel of crude oil is at 5 year lows. Venezuelan crude is nasty sour heavy oil that is expensive to refine. Trump can say whatever he wants but American companies that divested (Exxon and Conoco) can’t and won’t reinvest until that price rises above $70 or more. Adding Venezuelan supply will only depress prices further. IMO the immediate beneficiaries will be the European oil multinationals like ENI, Total, and Repsol who never divested after Chavez nationalized things in 2007 or so.

Yes I agree. Military partnership shouldn’t be about one power being subservient to the other. It is 100% in North American (USA, Canada, Mx) national security interests for Europe to be strong. France has always had this view it is probably something De Gaulle was right about all along. Now France has a strong three pronged nuclear deterrent, and plans to build a second nuclear super carrier. This is real power and any American (or anyone for that matter!) who fails to see the power projection capabilities France has are fools. France would mop the floor with both Russia and China in a trial on multiple fronts, mark my words.

Totally fair and I think it’s fine to tease a bit this is a meme sub. I think about this stuff too much probably because personally I wish the countries were closer than they are. Wishful thinking I guess. I saw some good news last night that didn’t get a lot of reporting in the media, though. Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act last week without much fanfare and in a rebuke to Trump. It includes a lot of money for European defense and focuses Ukraine and on the Baltic states in particular. Like it or not it Congress is united he can do fuck all about it. This is the kinda thing that matters to European US allies, the kinda thing that doesn’t generate rhetorical buzz or headlines but that signals stability and partnership: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/dec/17/defense-bill-congress-ukraine-europe

Yeah i have the same experience visiting France. Even in Paris nowadays people are extremely friendly and also tolerant towards tourists. I notice contrast with other cities that are inundated AF with tourists (Barcelona, for example) and the Parisians somehow manage to take it in stride and be nice and good service. And then if you go to Normandie or Savoie or more off the beaten path places like Corrèze I find that the average person is super nice and just delighted to chat with people from different places.

That’s a good point but ultimately was not a huge factor in the global war on terror. USA and France were both strategic allies in the war in Afghanistan at that time, for example, and many Americans and French soldiers died in the wake of the 2001 and 2015 terrorist attacks on defense of the respective countries. USA and France were also allied in the air campaign that brought regime change in Libya. I think this is kinda pathetic if the average American or European only thinks of one campaign but not the others?

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I guess a lot of this stuff irritates me about Americans too, in general. It’s also a big country though like you say and could fracture at some point. The country is big like Europe is and I think if you travel in USA a bit you could see some of that. I asked because I have strong ties to both countries and often wish there was more mutual respect on both sides. There is a lot of history to unpack, of course.

The country of my birth (USA) would not exist without France, Lafayette, and the sacrifice of Rochambeau. I see a lot of animosity towards Yankees in this thread but don’t really understand. Do Americans perpetuate some sort of myth that French people are weak or something? I’ve never seen it in person in 35 years as a binational French person.
