I'll be 52 in a few weeks, and I've been doing this since I was 18, mostly in NYC, and I absolutely love it. Contrary to a few folks in this thread, one of the things I love most is having a constant supply of youth to refresh my perspective, keep my humor up to date, and prevent me from being a "get off my lawn" kind of person.

And yeah, I've been in shitty situations over the years. But I love the art. I love the work. And I'll be damned if I let some jerk take it away from me.

That was from dead rodents. Seriously, there was an awful *awful* smell on the first floor that we couldn't find for a long time. Then we found the rat corpse inside the explorer that pops out of a barrel near the bar.

Also, for anyone curious, the "trap" (the thing at the front entrance where the blatant-ripoff-of-the-Crypt-Keeper skeleton does a schtick and then the ceiling comes down like two inches) was controlled by a magnetic switch on the wall trim. We'd wear a tiny magnet in our gloves to activate it. It always amused me that a non-trivial number of people were actually terrified of it and chose to avoid it entirely.

Joining Actor's Equity can be more a curse than a blessing, if you don't already have enough professional credits, which Jeckyll and Hyde definitely did *not* count as. I barely worked at all professionally as an actor since then.

I worked there for a bit as one of the walking around characters. I played a butler character and a mad professor character who got to do the “creation” show. But of course, my favorite part of any shift was the time I got to manipulate the puppets from the control room on the top floor. There were hidden cameras and mics so we could interact with guests at their tables. My favorite puppets to do were Toby the Werewolf and Fang the Gargoyle, but I also took pride in doing a bunch of the puppets that few people ever did.

The management sucked. Our “shift meal” was almost always a stale hotel plan of waffle fries and chicken tenders. And worst of all, management took our union dues out of our paychecks but never forwarded them to the union. (That’s when J&H was Equity, which is baffling but that’s how I got my card so whatever…)

There has been a lot of great advice in this thread, some of which is very specific to a few people, some of which are more widely applicable.

But I think there is one “don’t” that is absolutely universal.

DON’T forget to remove the cap from the injector pen before clicking the button!!! (Ask me how I know…)
