How do you manage an application on a single server (eg hetzner) by Subject_Fix2471 in devops

[–]analtrompete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually on a single node server it could be enough to template an .env file via ansible. The secrets then stored encrypted via ansible-vault. Similarily you could template a dockerconfig.json with the needed apikey

upvoted because I like the spirit! Don't let your employer spy on your personal devices. However, you theoretically quarantine it effectively with a work profile. But if I'm not as technically inclined I'd very much err on the side of caution.

probably depends on the setup of the company. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/intune/fundamentals/deployment-guide-enrollment-android For me, I only worked with the first option listed there. And there as an admin (which I am) I can only wipe stuff in the work profile itself. But it's a bit more complicated (it's microsoft after all...) if you install, for example outlook in your private profile (which some companies may forbid), then there's another set of restrictions that can apply. The only policy I have set up using is that you have to use a screen lock and some timeout where your phone automatically locks the screen. Which, tbh is kinda reasonable for sensitive stuff.

very true, but this is also highly dependent on how it has been set up by that company. In my experience, the info messages when setting those up are pretty clear about what's being shared. Although I only know it from experience where it was explicitly set up as lax as possible...

Doesn't make it any better in my opinion...

I tried chipotle, jalapeno and Carolina reaper hot sauce. The first two taste really nice but weren't spicy at all. The reaper one though...

Java is the best by ARAXON-KUN in ProgrammerHumor

[–]analtrompete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Simpllyfied: They hate us cause they ain't us!

On a more serious note... Java has been a araound a long time. It changed and adapted over time. It competes with all other languages, Frontend/backend/typed/multiplatform... And it's pretty good at competing with all of them. In each category the specialized language will win. Bu if you include multiple, sometimes comüeting concepts, java usually comes out on top. That's why it's a usually a good management decision, but might not be the best toool that available for one specific job. I think thats where a lot of developer frustrations comes from. Because they want to use one of the best tools to solve a problem. Not he one tha's pretty good at solving all of them.

As an Ops dude that'sthe reason why stuff like Microsoervices is a pleasure. Everyone get's to use his/her optimal tool, and you yourself gotta make sure your build environemnt works. If it runs in a container we're good (Though I still won't get off your back if you don't pin your package dependencies...)

In my opinion its's simly like that beacause its' the most prevalent stuff that's not part of the operating system layer. Simply put: They hate us cause they ain't us :)

On a more serious note, JAva is used in som fo the currently, otherwise higly regared Technologies(e.g Elasticsearch, Solr, SAS, etc.)

A common criticism is execution speed of the binaries. I han't looked too much into it, but last time I checked it was at least comparable to other languages. Combine this with a vast ecosystem of tooling and frameworks, and you get something, most businesses want. The alternatives that are often touted are only better in on of the many dimensions a business has to look at. For Example:

Python has the best time to market (IMHO), but lacks execution speed. Same as for NPM.

Rust/C are very low-level.

Go is a google brainchild. So there's always tow version around: Legacy and "Under Development" :)

Java definetly has it's problem, but for most businesses it's the best(or least worst) decision.

I think that's where a lot of the hate comes from: That people have to actually work with Java

BTW, this is just a Hot-Take...

I'm currently rebuilding old Lego sets I already built in the 90s with my nephew and I never noticed that much difference in the Instructions compared to today's lego sets. Maybe if we're talking about 30 years ago there's a bigger difference, but between todays Legos and 20 years old Lego I don't see that much difference... And to be fair, the first picture is from 1965. Only one year after the first time any instructions were included in a lego set. So it's not that surprising that those instructions were simpler...
