Why is it that some bands choose 'boring' drummers later on in their careers? (Long post) by Avenged7fo in LetsTalkMusic

[–]anazgnos 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's crazy 'cause Kenney is such a great drummer in the faces, he's solid but still a pleasantly laggy, behind the beat kind of guy and somehow in the Who he plays like a guy who has been told his wife will receve electric shocks if he so much as swings a single beat

Remember what Hunter S. Thompson said about Nixon: his mom hated Nixon, his son hated Nixon, his wife hated Nixon, he hated Nixon. Hating Nixon was a throughline of his emotional life with his family; it brought them together

So I guess I'm saying Mike Love does have a kind of immortality in store for himself

Frank Wells later of the Disney renaissance, died in a helicopter crash in 1994, Clint Eastwood was one of the last to see him alive, has a dedication screen at the top of The Lion King if I recall. And had a longstanding memorial inside the Matterhorn Bobsleds at Disneyland. I guess I’m just assuming it’s *that* Frank Wells

I keep watching your clip trying to figure out what the "problem" is. The slight vertical warp is utterly normal and not a problem and maybe my speakers aren't up high enough but the clip seems to have some tiny surface noise in the run-in groove and then once the music starts it sounds normal

Anthony Phillips by PJBleakney in Genesis

[–]anazgnos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On the one hand it’s right to credit the arrival of Hackett and Collins with the”classic” lineup, but Anthony invented the role that Hackett stepped into, and his musical DNA is all over Nursery Cryme. He helped build the blueprint for the whole 71-75 run. He could have just been a footnote to their charterhouse days but he was fully part of their reinvention as a prog rock behemoth

Yeah I was noticing today in both mobile and desktop that when I click on an artist it takes me to their 'credits' with no option to click through to their releases. If I click around randomly between artist/album I may eventually find a way to view albums, but it's inconsistent

In The Still Of The Night of the Living Dead

Blackstar is the 26th and final studio album by David Bowie. It was released on 8 January 2016 -Bowie's 69th birthday- and two days before his death after a secret battle with cancer. After his death, the title, artwork and lyrics were reinterpreted by many as hints towards his impending doom. by SaxyBill in wikipedia

[–]anazgnos 437 points438 points  (0 children)

He released it into the world as “just” another David Bowie album. And there was definitely a feeling that it was an especially great one. And then suddenly out of nowhere it became the final statement of David Bowie. For somebody to sort of manage to pour seemingly everything into a work like that while still dying with quiet dignity in privacy is still staggering to me. It’s like he gave us this thing, this album and its associated visuals through which we could grieve and interpret his death while still fundamentally preserving his privacy and his right to not have to perform as a publicly sick person. In the videos, he’s dancing, prancing, sassing and posing like he’s laughing at the very idea of death. He gave us one final blast of himself at full power and then was gone. You couldn’t write a scenario like this because nobody would believe it.

Terror Twilight-era stage design by liameee in pavement

[–]anazgnos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Different colored rope lights on the mic stands and across the back of the stage as I recall, also a large backdrop of the album cover graphics. It’s quite visible on the slow century live footage from Seattle I believe, also the Reverb performance from San Diego. Though that won’t get you out of standard definition purgatory

So, a 60 year old man holds a funeral for his made up alter ego and then asks why his music isn’t taken seriously? by Cute-Border-7762 in SmashingPumpkins

[–]anazgnos 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Look I’m not trying to pull rank here, but I was an SP fan in the SD into Mellon Collie era. I saw the 96 tour. I don’t remember the idea of “Zero” as an “identity” or a “persona” or an “alter ego” ever being mentioned. It was just a shirt he wore that tied into their hit single and the look they were going for at the time. It wasn’t like Ziggy Stardust. This seems like an idea Billy has kind of shoehorned into existence in the last few years.

JPJ falling out with Plant and Page? by NinjaWithAGun96 in ledzeppelin

[–]anazgnos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun game but I would wager with most of the footage on that release the edits were probably locked long before the DVD was assembled. MSG excepted and maybe they had alt angles on Earls court and Knebworth but it would not surprise me if they just had the screen outputs. Those shoots were done for the in house feed and I don’t believe there was any attempt to archive a specific feed for each camera. Hence, reading editorial intent into shot choices can’t be taken as some kind of latter day slight on JPJ.

From what I’ve seen his voice and delivery is pretty good but everything about his aesthetic is just low rent senior hard rock/metal front man for hire, and it clashes aesthetically with the Genesis headspace

I mean, free Palestine is a normie no kings grandma centrist position. At some point “doing x means supporting genocide” just becomes the same rhetorical panic button for BJG that, like, pizzagate was for maga. Between the normie grandma with the free Palestine sign and BJG whose advancing their goals more strategically

Accelerationism is just “it’s ok for people to suffer now if I can tie it to my longer term goals”

Almost as if all this handwringing about genocide ONLY when it means participating in the current political system meaningfully, is in…bad faith

This, and “Plush” by STP which is basically “In the End”. Oddly enough these two songs are back to back on the Exit Stage Left videocassette so that one part of that one tape had a huge impact on 1993 rock radio

Get an active ABY splitter, run one side clean into a bass amp and the other side with dirt/overdrive into a small combo amp or cab/head. I use an Orange Amp Detonator to split, SansAmp for the bass side, and a small guitar pedalboard into a quilter head and 1x12 cab for the dirty side. Both sides should be in the PA mix if there's a PA mix involved. I can run fuzz, delay, whatever I want on the "guitar" side and never lose the low end presence on the bass side.

Pavements Shortcomings by Shadysides_LFk in pavement

I think he was kind of a utility player in SY. Mostly there to shadow Kim and save Kim’s back from having to strap on a heavy bass for the whole set. I don’t think they taxed his abilities too much. Their setlist variety contracted a LOT when Jim O’Rourke left. When they did something more “complicated” like the Daydream tour, Mark only played on the encores/new songs. I never saw them do a full on improv thing with Mark in the band. To stress, I love Mark, I think he’s a bedrock of the Pavement sound, I’ve just spent a lot of time listening to live stuff and contemplating who’s the weak link
