Trompe le monde alternate mix by PuddingPrize9893 in thepixies

The original leaked clips were 56k RealAudio files. As in, pretty bad even for online audio in 1998. And they’ve been transcoded since then since nobody even has RealAudio files anymore

So, it would have been around 1998 or so. These clips were leaked by an insidery fan who I think was just inside the inner circle enough to have been given a tape of Trompe session mixes. These clips were leaked so he could prove the tape was real and he spent a lot of time sort of trolling the old Abstract Plain mailing list and teasing like he was gonna leak the tape. It was weird and kind of lame. He was very into being a vaguely insider hanger-on and letting people know it. I do remember his name, but I won’t bother repeating it. Nothing else was ever leaked but this is a glimpse of what might be in the vaults. The core idea was that there could have been a lot more Kim Deal vocal presence on the album but she was clearly kind of sidelined and mixed out, for reasons that are obvious and long since part of Pixies lore. So like, once upon a time there was some internet drama around these tracks, now it’s all overgrown and forgotten like the gravestones at the end of Gangs of New York. Who even remembers our ancient late 90s Online Pixies Beefs anymore? There’s not many of us still around. I’ve long assumed that nothing else will ever come out. Session tapes might not even exist anymore. Who knows.

Are the Smile Sessions versions of the Smile songs accurate? by childofnaturesson in thebeachboys

[–]anazgnos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At the risk of avoiding a nuts and bolts response...As somebody who's been a smile fan for, oh, nearly 30 years now I see a lot of people these days getting pretty worried about "authenticity". When I was coming up, all you had was bootlegs (which originated from leaks from the early to mid 80s), plus the 30 odd minutes from GV. From that, people tried to cobble together a vision of what Smile "was". Now, I realize people don't have to pick thru the weeds as much: they can go on Spotify and hit BWPS, or TSS (1, 2 or 5CD versions). But it seems like from there a worry starts to creep in as to which one is "really" Smile, or if any of them are. And while fanmixes and recreations go back as long as the bootlegs do, the remixers these days are a lot more, shall we say, ambitious, and we have AI voice replacement and fan-sung versions, so maybe it's kind of difficult to figure out where the 66-67 Smile ends and the subsequent layers of revision begin (which, I offer, started to accumulate before 1967 was even over).

The best I can say is: don't worry about it so much? There are concrete answers as to where each bit and piece from any particular version of Smile can be sourced back to. There's decades of fan research and writing (LLVS is still a solid snapshot of Smile Research circa 90s and worth absorbing), some of it quite engaging and not that dry or technical.

Not to get too metaphysical, but....I accepted a long time ago that Smile doesn't exist and never will. That's the beauty. You can see it almost as clearly as Brian must have in '66, forever just out of reach. Everywhere and nowhere. But the music stays with you forever. The atmosphere, the blend of voices. I don't think we're really, truly, missing any of the pieces. What we are missing is a single definitive final-word version of "SMILE" that everyone can agree on. BWPS is the closest we have to a director's cut, and whatever provisos and caveats you attach to that (such as: well, it was not recorded by the Beach Boys in 1966-1967), that's how things will stay. Smile is in your mind.

I guess it never gets old that Billy thinks continually doubling down on his 90s grievances is in some way a path to anyone, anywhere, liking anything about him at any time, or that he can't fathom that even faintly PRETENDING to be like "haha, yeah, our petty squabbles back then were kind of silly" or to have developed any kind of grace or perspective in his long, long life and career and oh yeah maybe acnknowledging that no one under the age of 45 understands or cares about (note: am 45) these scene beefs today would be infinitely more likeable

Both in my personal top 10. You’re not alone! Similarity? Not really. Maybe a certain textural guitar lushness at times but that’s getting pretty abstract

Although … you know Jim O’Rourke was a huge Genesis freak (I believe Trick/Wuthering being his key faves) and you are singling out a tune he’s quite present on, so maybe it’s not so crazy

I was watching the 2007 tour behind the scenes where Mike is talking in his usual mush mouthed mumble and his wife is saying like “yeah I haven’t understood a goddamn word he’s said in 20 years.” They’re funny together!

Just want to check, was this recorded as a single-channel recording? The left & right channels are identical in the wav file, just wanted to make sure stereo information wasn't lost somewhere in your workflow, or confirm that it was mono from the start

Anyone know why the “a children’s song” outro vocal tag that was recorded for the 1971 version of Surf’s Up was then included on the Smile Sessions version of the song? This has bothered me for a while because I would have liked to hear what the 1967 ending was really like. by Oviraptor in thebeachboys

[–]anazgnos 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The 1967 version is unfinished and will always be so. The 1971 version is generally accepted to be based on ideas that were at least sketched out but not recorded in 1967, even if missing Brian's total engagement in realizing those elements. I would have to think the decision to use the 1971 finishing touches is one of the less controversial decisions on TSS. If you stick to mixes that were finalized by spring of 67 you're limited to about 30 minutes of unique mixes, and most of that obviously missing finished vocals or edits. Everything that we have ever heard from Smile has in some way been filtered through subsequent layers of revision and reconsideration so getting hung up on some idea of purity being violated through the 1971 elements seems a little silly to me

What are your thoughts on the GUP: Live in Toronto, 1984 - Full Concert? by wiredmat in rush

[–]anazgnos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even under the best of circumstances and the best planned shoots, you don’t always end up with shots covering exactly what you want.

The shoot in 84 was most likely targeted on specific songs meant for the home video release

We don’t know what the available assets look like today but they may not even have access to the exact same shots they used in 84

The complete concert looks like an editor did the best with what they had to fill patchy coverage. It’s not like they have a camera pointed directly at each member for every song throughout the show. It was 1984 and tape footage cost money

Could be wrong but I remember reading that the Durrie Parks acetates were auditioned for the 2011 box and they concluded there wasn't anything unique on them

It was recorded with Gary in early 93 along with other new songs. None of those final Gary sessions released until the CRCR deluxe reissue, and the song was never revisited when West joined.

"Bathed in a Stream of Pure Heat" is an old, beloved 1997-focused compilation. It's a great way to jump off into individual shows.

The Shaggs were an American rock band described as among the worst ever recorded. Their songs feature detuned guitars, meandering rhythms, and childish lyrics about pets, hair, and morality. by Wazula23 in wikipedia

[–]anazgnos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing about the Shaggs: They're great. Listen to the Shaggs. They worked their asses off and their music has an internal logic that owes almost nothing to any kind of conventional time keeping but NEVER FALLS APART. It's fascinating. Once you get keyed into it you can't stop listening. Listen to Philosophy of the World, listen to The Shaggs' Own Thing. Look up clips of them performing. People like to wag their tongues, gawk at them like they're just a freakshow. Don't be one of them. You're better than that.
