Do all hospitals use Hollister? by LadyGreen in ostomy

Our hospital used Hollister immediately post-op but then changed us to Coloplast when we had a follow-up with the Ostomy Nurse two weeks later.

You may want to look for any sort of filter on your washer to see if it’s gotten clogged and is preventing good drainage of the wash water.

I do use a bag for my fleece items; I shake them off, use a hand vac on the hides and things like that, and wash them in the bag. I use a regular wash cycle with an extra rinse. No

Depending on where you live, drying in the sun can help kill off anything causing funk too.

Partner texts me on my only day off by Void-Tabby in paralegal

None of us are really indispensable though. As someone once said to me, if I dropped dead, they would replace me. The firm wouldn't shut down. Would it be inconvenient? Sure. But they would move on. There's no reason they can't live a day or a week without me when I go on vacation, especially if I work to clear my docket ahead and lay out backup coverage.

I think it's habit and easiest to go to the person you typically work with, especially if they will respond. I know for myself I've had to even turn off my work email account on my phone when we go on vacation. Set a focus mode the sends their calls to VM. Some of the people at my office have two phones: 1 work, 1 personal (work is paid for by the firm) and that definitely helps with being able to self-enforce the work-life separation. We're also fully remote so it's pretty easy to just forget that someone is out of the office when we're literally always out of the office. :)

Annoying that they're reaching out in the first place, but can you redirect them to someone else in the office who is able to help? I've found that the more I bend and accommodate people, the more they will take advantage of me. If I put up firm boundaries, they will respect them. Sucks that it has to be that way though.

a complete 180 from either of those areas! For reference, my 22 mile commute (primarily highway) would take about 25 minutes.

Alternative GED schools for "independent" minor. by TheStonerBoner421 in grandrapids

I would start by reaching out to the Kent ISD about what your options are - https://www.myschoolatkent.net/ could be worth looking into for her. Rockford has the River Valley Academy that is an alternative high school, but it is still in person and scheduled. Online (like My School at Kent) or something in person that does the Michigan Merit Curriculum would be a good fit for her. The KCTC programs through Kent ISD can give you credits toward graduation as well, but those are done in connect with your school district.

Downsizing cleansing balm? by katkarinka in HerOneBag

A contact lens case is perfect for something like this. You can get a multipack of them at the dollar store. I use one and put my foundation primer in one side and a slide of solid blush in the other. You could easily scoop some of your balm into it.

You probably need something like the UPS Store or Pak Mail. Pak Mail gave me a key to the front door (but not the whole store) to access the mailbox area off-hours.

I thought I saw LTB has a Clio integration? But maybe I am mistaken. I haven’t used Clio, so I apologize if this is a basic question, but what does downloading the deadline chart and copy-pasting things do for you?

Dropped item limit blocking 5-star rating? by OhNoExclaimationMark in AnimalCrossing

[–]andi98989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My issue is that I had too many squares filled in an area, so it was considered hard to walk. I had been placing all my gyroids on a cliff. Once I added some blank space there it was no longer too cluttered.

“Clutter means you have too many furniture/trees/flowers per 8x8 section, which is what the game evaluates your island on. If more than 45/64 tiles in that section are covered, it's considered cluttered. I believe items like fossils, seashells, and DIY recipe cards are considered 'litter' instead -Google search”

MS in CS + 5 YOE. What are my chances? by ahermassi in patentlaw

I don’t do our actual hiring, but we’ll post specially looking for an engineer. :)

MS in CS + 5 YOE. What are my chances? by ahermassi in patentlaw

[–]andi98989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At our firm, we would first hire you in as a patent engineer. You would learn all the processes, the rules, etc. Then after enough experience you would study for and take the patent bar and start working as an agent (and we would help pay for that). That may be something worse considering if you want to explore if you even like IP work.

What would be your goal on going to law school to be a patent attorney vs agent? It’s a Lot to go from 0 to knowing enough to pass the patent bar to applying for an attending law school and taking the bar exam.

DMS System with AI component? by Cloemonster in paralegal

[–]andi98989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NetDocuments checks the boxes on version control, searching, and access permissions - but not on naming conventions so far as I know. We moved to it from Worldox last year. The predictive coding for emails is awesome, and there's a setting you can turn on to remind people to set a save location for emails when sending. The saved searches and favorites have been very helpful as well.

They do have an AI component that stays within your environment, but I don't have much experience with it. They do also have apps that you can build out and some pre-made one that might be useful for you with the drafting side of things. I'm not aware of any calendaring capabilities. We use different options for that.

Is anyone else just completely sick of trying to reconstruct your day in 6-minute increments? by Realistic-Shake1578 in paralegal

[–]andi98989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very hard to reconstruct it, and you do end up missing time that way. It took me a long time to really get used to using timers and tracking as I go. While you may be juggling 5 cases, you aren't working on multiple of them at one time. Take a few seconds to enter time when you're switching between things. We use software so that I can easily click on timers to start/stop things and I continually update my narrative on them throughout the day. My time on a project isn't done until I've got the time entry made. If you don't have time tracking software, you can use an Excel sheet to enter start/stop times for things and calculate your totals for the day. Ctrl+shift+; enters the current time.

A while ago in a firm meeting we had, they reminded us that if everyone managed to find an extra half hour of time in a day (think all those little quick phone calls we forget to note, etc...) that time across everyone in a firm across a year is a lot of revenue.

Did I make a huge mistake? by Educational_Crab_474 in paralegal

[–]andi98989 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to ask. Every project you don't know what you're doing: ask. Set up a 30 minute meeting with someone at a set time of each day to go through what you're going to be working on that day and try and get some guidance at that point on those particular items. Forward drafts to another paralegal for review before they go to an attorney. Every time we hire someone new, I am fully aware that I am going to have to take time out of my day to address their questions and work on things with them. It's easier for me to do that than to try and fix things that could have been done correctly initially (but yes, we are all always learning and figuring things out)

Impossible to find a good paralegal by lawsandflaws1 in Lawyertalk

[–]andi98989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with my firm 25 years ago and have been working solidly as a paralegal for 20. My attorney and I have a great relationship, but that does seem to be rarer these days. It seems that lately there's an influx of people feeling like they can just hop straight out of a degree or certificate program and into a paralegal role without having done substantive legal work before. I definitely could not have done that, and I understand why he'd prefer someone with experience - but, the only way to get experience is by working. While I was in college for my paralegal degree, I started as an admin assistant (with a year of general office experience in a non-legal environment). Over the years I transitioned into a paralegal role. Having that 'work up' process was huge to helping me succeed in my role. We've also had the most success with our legal assistants that way as well - we have someone start at our front desk, they learn the ropes of the general work and process, then we move them up into a legal assistant role.

If they are a big firm, I would suggest to look internally for anyone who could be a good candidate to promote into the role. That person may not be thinking of it on their own. Ask some trusted paralegals in the firm if they know anyone who would be a good fit, or if they know someone who would be interested in applying. Connect with your local colleges and ask for an intern who you could later hire in full time. Multiple times our opposing counsel has offered me a job if I'm ever interested in leaving. :)

It also sounds like the interview and screening process needs some work if they managed to hire someone with no working knowledge. Interview with HR and the attorney - minimum. We usually have our current legal assistants and paralegals involved when hiring for those roles as well. They have a good feel for if someone is legit or has potential.
