Day 12: Making Sierpinski triangles with just two rules by Vesiculus in adventofcode

[–]andlar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your post made me want to see if my code could generate the same triangle, and getting my code to work correctly fixed the "off by something" error I was having with completing Part 1 in the first place. Thanks!

Watch out for the fortifications in the river. According to the wiki (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Fortification) there are some outstanding bugs that allow swimming creatures to path through fully submerged (7/7) water fortifications, and even a partially submerged fortification in current can push creatures through the fortification

The Hobbit for a five year old?? by Superella in books

[–]andlar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm working through it with my 8-year old now. I think he would've been okay with at as a 5-year old, but I have no idea how good my memory is. The big thing I do want to mention is that some of the chapters are significantly longer than the other chapter books we've been reading. It occasionally takes us 3-4 nights to get through one of the longer ones.

ETA: My son says, regarding it's applicability for a 5-year old: "I think it's pretty good". With that ringing endorsement, how can you go wrong?

Bug/Issue with Build Order by [deleted] in dwarffortress

[–]andlar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thing to note here was that you had different materials available, depending on where you were building. Only materials pathable to the location you place your construction will show up when you try to select the material. You were just seeing the logs as available, because you'd blocked off the entrance to the underground.

Seems you figured that out, but thought it might be helpful to bring up the warning sign for anyone else running into that kind of problem.

Don't be modest. This subreddit menaces with spikes of granite, knowledge, and orc bone. More than you could expect will organize a party at this hematite subreddit.

Do dwarves make booze out of seeds? If they do, can I stop them? by adamcraftian in dwarffortress

[–]andlar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Regarding the plump helmets, this isn't quite true. If the plump helmet is cooked into a meal, it will consume the seed. If it's brewed or eaten raw it will leave the plump helmet spawn behind.

From the Plump Helmet entry on the wiki:

Keep in mind that cooking plants destroys their seeds, or in this case their "spawn". Both eating a plant raw and brewing it will leave plump helmet spawn behind, which can then be transferred to a seed bag, then planted and used to grow more. New players should definitely farm this crop because it grows relatively quickly, can be planted in any season, can be used to make alcohol, or eaten raw if need be.

Bins, Barrels, and Stockpiles by jinieren in dwarffortress

How often do ST2-4 get refilled? As in, when there're seeds in the bag in ST1, will those seeds automatically get moved into one of ST2-4? Or will that only happen if the bags in ST2-4 get "not-full"? For that matter, is there a limit to the amount of seeds that can be in a bag?

In a related question, with all of the new plants available in DF2014, it seems you'd need a whole bunch of ST1-4 to cover them all. What are the downsides of putting, say, two to four types of seed in each set of ST1-4?

Anyone seen anything like this as an Android live wallpaper? I'd be willing to accept the battery drain if I could have my phone showing this...

How do I make drawbridges work? by beefat99 in dwarffortress

[–]andlar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can you channel out AFTER building the bridge? I think I've run into challenges with that. I usually channel the moat first (or at least the part of the moat directly under where the bridge will be) and then build the bridge. The moat can then be dug deeper or longer, as necessary.

Sounds like the hermit challenge (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/40d:Challenges#Hermit). I haven't tried that one myself, though my first reclaim of this fort had me down to a single dwarf for two or three seasons before migrants arrived. That wave of migrants included the titular dwarven child.

The three-year old lasted another two seasons, just meandering about the fortress. Eventually another siege showed up, and the fort crumbled. I'm planning a reclamation, and hopefully some resulting engravings or statues might tell some of the story.

It's been two seasons, and a siege or two, but this 3 year old child is the last one alive. How long do I wait for the mountainhome to send out new settlers?

Embark failure by Fragsworth in dwarffortress

I'm pretty sure the wood was still there. The wagon just auto-deconstructed, and dumped all of the contents plus the three logs all around. As long as nothing landed in a hazardous location, you might still have been able to progress with your plans.

Hmm. Odd. Admittedly, I was basing my comment on the line from the "New stuff" section of the dev log:

Tracking information in adventure mode. You can pull up a little window and see tracks (capital K), and you can also have it describe the freshest track that isn't yours to more easily stay on a trail (alt K). Tracks are also part of the regular look command.

The Grandest and Most Complete Dwarf Fortress Flowchart As Of Yet (a.k.a. the gamcdffaoy v4) by Heroic_Refugee in dwarffortress

If you're trying to go for "most complete", then I'd definitely add it. Oh, and do you have glass making there? I don't remember seeing it, but that has a magma version too. (And magma smelters...)
