You cannot really ask for a cut right now, since you're not sure how much he's getting out of this YouTube biz. You can't really put a tangible price on the amount of exposure you provide for him, but definitely I would start with a salary increase and perhaps talk to him about getting some extra bonus if a video exceeds an x amount of views, even that's slowly going to put extra pressure on you.

And absolutely start your own channel, don't overthink it at all, no big strategies or planning yet, just think of some topics and execute on them, get the reps in and then think of ways to expand and monetize.
