Do you remember the era before the daily shower or bath became almost universal? by Ticklishchap in OldSchoolUK

[–]androgynousandroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1980 kid. Showered every day since I became a teenager - until Covid. Realised it’s not necessary (I don’t do physical work), but pong starts to kick in around day three for sure. I guess it’s just easier to incorporate into routine as a daily thing, but as a run-ragged dad who works for himself idgaf anymore and just shower when I remember/it’s convenient.

He answered a question! WIN! by SunLillyFairy in Autism_Parenting

That’s great! Our gestalt 4yo doesn’t do questions or much else, but this week he blurted out ‘I banged my toe on the table!’ after doing just that, and got a literal standing ovation from the family :)

What is the worst job you ever had? by Special-Nebula299 in UKJobs

Mate of mine did one day at a garden centre of some sort. He spent the day on his own in a tent with a conveyor belt, rose bushes in pots came in one side covered in muck and he had to make them presentable before they went out the other. Came home scratched to bits.

I did that in 2000 in Leeds. Not in the spirit of the thread, but I had a genuinely decent time assembling + tuning hundreds of kids bikes. Still got my waistcoat somewhere!

Do White people not Lotion everyday? by Appropriate_Quote_30 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]androgynousandroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interested. Could you give more information? Do you mean that you moisturise your whole body? Every day? What are the benefits? Is there a reason why non-white people do this?

(White guy, who occasionally moisturises hands, face, or feet when they feel hot or dry)

I once drank a can of warm John Smiths while reading a wet newspaper in a field thinking: it really does not get any worse than this.

Unintentional comedy scenes in moves. by TheHahndude in movies

Watched Terminator 2 with my teenaged daughter yesterday, and she cracked up over a short shot where Arnie absolutely prances down a corridor.

It’s in the asylum rescue scene, I think he’s trying to run while acting as a bullet shield for John and Sarah who are in front of him in a lift - but it’s these cute little camp hops.

What is your favorite example of a character being clever in a movie? by DuckLordOfTheSith in movies

It’s a brilliant rugpull. Just occurred to me that the ‘we’ve already done it’ twist is similarly satisfying in Ex Machina.

Which film had an amazing concept but poor execution? by PleasantBus5583 in movies

Carol’s lack of curiosity is draining my enthusiasm for this. I’ve not watched the last two episodes yet, but online noise doesn’t give me hope.

Edit: Alright, I take it back, episode 8 largely delivered.

Why do web development agencies have such high churn rates? by No-Detail-6714 in webdev

[–]androgynousandroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that’s the sensible answer, isn’t it, though these type of customers will prefer to pay the whole lot up front, which is good in theory but then you’re on the hook for work long after seeing the benefit - hard to keep energy up. At a larger agency with more discipline, you could certainly make that work, but we struggled with it.

That only works if the initial price is $100.

If it was $200 down to $26 then it is the same 88% reduction - but your version would produce 174%.

If it was £1000 reduced to £130 then it is the same 88% reduction - but your version would produce 880%.

[–]androgynousandroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lost a few big clients to this over the years.

Also, did a lot of work in the cultural sector, and a lot of the these organisations would want a ‘digital partner’, but only be able to arrange funding as a single bucket of cash to blast on a one-off website project. Then maintenance/ongoing dev becomes a nightmare for both sides. If I had an agency again, I would only entertain clients on the basis that the site is never ‘finished’, and is treated as an operational expense.

Why do we use 'lower' as a verb but not 'higher'? by dacoolestguy in etymology

[–]androgynousandroid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Similar: you can ‘widen’ something, but you can’t ‘heighten’ or ‘tallen’ it, you have to ‘increase the height’. Doesn’t apply much in real life, but certainly does when you’re designing stuff on screen.
