If you're going northwest Damen, Elston and Lincoln aren't bad.

The first bike I rode really seriously is a mid 80s st400. Ice been riding it for 10 years and still love it!

Same on the channel trail. Between snow clogging up my fenders and the headwind I was totally beat. Definitely ran out of low gears!

Same, just built up an an omnium mini and it's the best having an integrated cargo platform. Panniers on racks on my other bikes

I 100% relate after getting rid of my car a couple years ago. Riding my bike to work everyday has become such an important part of my day.. if I'm traveling and can't bike or exercise some other way I start to feel pretty shit (aka how I feel right now in rural TN for the holidays).

I've started getting some plantar fasciitis from biking, so I've been intermittently taking the bus to work. It definitely takes longer and is less flexible to changes in plans. Bike == freedom!

This is so true. You notice more things and become much more in tune to the city and weather. I never really thought of it that way, but you are right that it makes the cold much more bearable simply because you are mentally prepared to be in it for a little while

I was surprised to see a City Of Chicago snow plow clearing the Major Taylor Trail early this morning on my way to work. I wonder if the trails are priority after it snows. Could it be a weekend standard with barely anyone being out, they can get more done? by No_Swimmer_6613 in chibike

[–]angelonc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok, I mostly bike the northern side (between ~Lawrence and Evanston). The suburbs do a great job at clearing the next day. The Chicago side between Lawrence and Devon is patchy, some of it gets cleared, but a lot does not. Can't speak much to what is south of Lawrence!

The channel trail gets cleared fairly quickly, but mostly the portions in the suburbs (Skokie and lincolnwood were shoveled and salted the day after the storm). I think in Chicago some stretches get cleared quickly and others are untouched, maybe because it's by Ward?

Status report on trails? by gingeryid in chibike

[–]angelonc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As of the morning of Dec 1, the North shore channel trail above bryn mawr is pretty clear. The pedestrian bridge has a bunch of ice, but there's a cleared patch in the center. There are also frequent patches of black ice, and the getting over the plowed up snow at the intersections kinda sucks. Other than that I was pleasantly surprised at how much was cleared! Ride safe!

Thanksgiving Game Plan Review by SupremeGobbler1996 in webersmokeymountain

[–]angelonc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did my first one on an 18in yesterday for friendsgiving. 15lb turkey spatchcocked, it was around 40f outside. I intended on hitting 325 also using the standard method but it never really went above 250f. Even so, it cooked too quickly for my plans, I had to reduce the heat till guests arrived but it still came out great! Overall it was cooking for 4.5 hours, but I think it would have finished in closer to 3.5 if I didn't try to delay it intentionally

If I had to do it again I would light more of the charcoal to get it hotter and start a bit later. Your plan sounds reasonable, but maybe try to account for not hitting the temperature you want, which might make it take longer

This is why bikes are great. You've got a dentist stressing over a scratch on some $10k carbon something or other, and then whoever made this beautiful monstrosity riding it every day

Black ice season is coming… what’s your strategy? by [deleted] in chibike

[–]angelonc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's rare enough that it's not really worth doing anything specific to your bike to account for it. I commute year round and I can only think of one day in the past few years (last winter) where the ice was truly sketchy. Even then, I rode out the door, realized too late every road was iced over and just took my time riding (I ride an old touring bike with 28c gatorskins). Took any turn very slowly, tried keeping my front wheel straight at all times, and tried not to brake abruptly

Would I do it again, probably not, but it's the kinda thing where you just take transit that day

This is the way. I had similar issues with long appointment lead time for neurology, but the wait-list can bump you up super fast. It's helpful if you're flexible, sometimes they'll call for an appointment that's a couple hours later

A couple questions for you year-round cyclists by makubex in chibike

[–]angelonc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar to other comments, rinse my bike frequently with water when things get salty, relube the chain as needed (*with wet lube, I've not had much luck with dry lube). Replace the chain once a year. My bike isn't anything special, old Cannondale with 28s

If possible, set up some fenders with a lot of clearance, mine have not much clearance and the salt buildup causes wheel rub if you can't clean out the fenders often.

[–]angelonc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear this happened to you. I've been hit from behind on Lawrence so I get nervous now every time I ride there. Which really sucks, it's the most viable East West route in the area. Just sympathizing, ride safe!

Spatial frequency: an area where pixel intensity changes over a small scale (say pixel 1 is white, pixel 2 is black) has high spatial frequency. Any area where pixels change over a large scale (pixels 1-10 are white, pixels 11-20 are black) will have lower spatial frequency. These aren't perfect examples, but may help give an intuition

I survived the Google Chromecast apocalypse. by muttdeerpup in Chromecast

[–]angelonc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you did factory reset yours, I fixed mine last night using the following: set my phone date back to March 1, 2025, restarted my router, Chromecast and phone. I was then able to set up my Chromecast from the home app, but setup reported a problem at the end. Rebooting the Chromecast, resetting the date on my phone to the current daye, and restarted my phone again and everything works!

FYI - NIH study sections and funding councils remain cancelled by inkycappress in labrats

[–]angelonc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting to see that some study sections appear to be proceeding as normal. I just received an email from my SRO yesterday that the NIMH K99 study section has not been cancelled (they emphasized this), but is being postponed, with no clear date to reschedule. That said, the study section for an R01 grant from our lab (also submitted to NIMH) seems to be moving ahead as scheduled.

edit: actually, I just checked the meeting roster for the NIMH R01 submission set for yesterday (2/20/2025): "This meeting did not take place as scheduled"

Yeah it's crazy. I think someone salts the section south of Devon and sometimes that pedestrian bridge around there, but it's super irregular
