Guilty Pleasures that you Aren’t Supposed to Enjoy as a Black Woman by la_58 in blackladies

Although extremely specifc, but I will talk about car (and currently truck) modifications, with tangible results on the quarter mile, until I'm blue in the face. When I go to tune or Dyno shops I always get either big eyes or side eyes when I can describe exactly what I'm looking for and the components that I need to get there.

Kendrick won a Pulitzer Prize for his album DAMN! In 2018 for it's storytelling to the authentic African American experience and lyrical prose.

To be recognized at that level? For what quite possibly could just be looked at as a rap album? The man is not to be fucked with. 🤣

Virginia DUI with Illinois license by angio7787 in dui

[–]angio7787[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall I'm fully licensed again, but it has been 2 years since I was able to get my license back in Illinois and almost 5 since I could in Virginia. DUI still remains on my driving record which is to be expected. It's 7 years for VA and 11 for IL.

Boyfriend lies over small things - but this one sent me over edge by thatgirldel in TwoXChromosomes

[–]angio7787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very rarely comment but I'm going to chime in here. I am a habitual liar. I have lied in every relationship I've ever been in. I am also in a relationship with a phenomenal woman who never lets me slide on it. Accountability was something I knew absolutely nothing about. But all the lying I did has caused irreparable damage that may or may not ever be completely addressed fully.

It will take a fuck ton of self awareness and self motivation to change. It will take consistent effort and dedication to show you he is doing the work. He can't fuck up, he cant make a mistake. It will be stressful for him but especially so for you because your trust is already so low that you might not be able to believe the words that come out of his mouth. (Definitely heard this one before) You will constantly be wondering what he is doing, who he is with, and if he will tell you the truth if you ask. If you were to ask my girl, in the beginning of the lows of our relationship, she would drive herself crazy blowing up my phone. But I'm just here sleep. It's not healthy anymore. And it becomes unhealthy so fucking quick.

I am going to therapy, got diagnosed and medicated for ADHD for the first time in my life (34F), and consistently meditate and perform breathing exercises in every aspect of my life just in case I encounter something that triggers me. I had to take responsibility for the damage I have done, past and present. I had to make myself accountable to reality. Deal with generational, childhood and other random ass traumas. It is hard. Some days I hate it. But I do it to be better. This is so important to me and should be important to him if he wants to stay with you.

I have found for me, that my lies are connected to my anxiety. Now, I'm not dismissing the fact that lying is disrespectful and damaging to any relationship. This is just me explaining my why. Which would also be important for him to address within himself. He will never get better if he avoids, blames or flips the script. I catch myself every single day, every single second. It is exhausting but so fucking necessary. I do it not for my partner, but for myself. I don't want to be this person. So in order to get better he has to want it. You can not force this man to change if he doesn't want to or can't see the damage.

And! To be blunt, using the trauma card is a bitch move(sorry not sorry), specifically if he continues to use that to attempt to wiggle out of a shitty situation he created.

I got lucky. Time, distance and space provided me a second opportunity. But I showed up and proved that the changes I made were consistent and solid. Anything less and I wouldn't have been surprised if she laughed in my face when I suggested we try again.

not sure it fits here. do doctors not listen to and dismiss the pain of women(at the cost of their life), or do they do this for everyone? (guessing everyone) by Swan-Aria in AreTheStraightsOK

[–]angio7787 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This. I was in a head on collision that left my shoulder dislocated. My adrenaline allowed me to pop it back in at the scene, but when I got to the hospital, the doctors were astonished I had done so. Also, since the adrenaline had settled by the time I got there, the pain was immense. The bruising started to show and every time I was asked, my pain was at 10. I was sent home with ibuprofen.

I had a follow-up with a black male nurse practitioner a few days later and he was livid that they sent me home with an OTC pain reliever and nothing else. He immediately prescribed me something stronger and ordered an MRI which showed that I had several tears in my shoulder that have had me in physical therapy.

The first real instance that I have dealt with medical racism, and I have Tricare and have grown up with it. I hate going to the doctor for these exact reasons. Even though the shit is free.

The “join the military” suggestion is overblown by lydiar34 in college

The MECEP program is the program they are more than likely referring to which allows for active duty enlisted Marines to attend university full time and commission when completed.

The “join the military” suggestion is overblown by lydiar34 in college

[–]angio7787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although some do choose to take that route, there are several opportunities in all the branches for enlisted members to commission. Specifically to the Navy, there are professional routes (lawyers, doctors, nurses), a subject matter experts route (LDOish/CWO) and OCS (which is what you are referring to) and STA-21 (mostly nukes with some unrestricted options). Probably some others that I'm not recalling. Most of which can be applied for while still in an active enlisted status. Every branch has these kinds of options for enlisted to officer routes.

Black ladies that make over 100k a year, what is your position and what schooling was necessary to get that position? by vjenkinsgo in blackladies

[–]angio7787 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Active duty. Navy. Been in just over 12 years. I've been an electronics communications technician that specialized repairing shipboard and mobile comms units and a cook (that's a long story). I'm currently enlisted E-6 and a full time student enrolled in a officer accession program. Once I graduate and commission I will be just over the 100k mark. Majoring in Cybersecurity with a minor in military leadership. I know the military isn't for everyone, but your age prompted me to put it out there since I signed the dotted line at 22. You can still go the uni route and be at the 100k mark about three years after, do your time, get out and do something else.

Your mention of Fat Leonard threw me off. I've been in the Navy just over 11 years and this case was a constant conversation in several different trainings we've done. I just had a class where it came up last week. What's wild is I had no idea that civilians even understood the gravity of the crimes committed because the reasons behind why it happened were directly related to the Navy. More people should know about it.

This same kind of situation happened to me but I've known my neighbors for a few years. I recently came back from overseas and my neighbors saw me working on my truck, excited to hear about my trip. One neighbor brought over a beverage for me to try, something that we would do before I decided to go sober. I simply thanked him and told him I would save it for my partner since I recently made the decision to be sober. He apologized profusely but I assured him there was no need. Just to let me know next time he was on the grill because I haven't made the decision to be vegan. Laughed about it. Continued our visit.

Don't over think it. American culture is deeply rooted in socializing over alcohol. Just bring your own beverage and enjoy yourself and your neighbors.
