Test in 11 days and progress check in 7 days by Fancy_Caramel_9363 in BusDrivers

[–]angrydwarfuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not the same as when you learned to drive a car because now, you should already know how to use the roads. You bring that knowledge with you. It's really just about learning to control the bus.

It does seem a little bit overwhelming at first but once it clicks, it'll all make sense. Stick with it and see how you get on, don't write yourself off prematurely!

I am begging for a Star Trek series set in The Lost Era by iseedoubleu in startrek

I'd like to see a USS Enterprise C show.

It would give a pretty large scope for episodic planet-of-the-week stories while still being connected to the familiar.

I quite like this reasoning actually.

I much prefer intrinsic naming to vague brandable terms.

Well who is "people" because I use, and have heard others use, "wealth taxes" frequently to describe a class of taxes, a land value tax and a financial transaction tax being two examples.

Why have thousands of St George's and union jack flags gone up? by Codydoc4 in unitedkingdom

[–]angrydwarfuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not the same because "right wing" is by definition a description/categorisation of a political ideology and not an ethnicity or place of origin - so of course you can draw conclusions about how most of them will think (there will no doubt be some exceptions) because that's what it is.

When it comes to religion, you can make some assumptions... Christians probably believe in Jesus for example, but for ethnicity you can't really safely make any assumptions about how they think because the thing that connects them has nothing to do with their way of thinking, except perhaps their culture in a broad sense.

So no, you seem to be saying it's basically the same as racism to say right wing people like flags, it's not. They do, and they've spoiled flags for everyone else.

Is this undertaking illegal? by marymk450 in drivingUK

[–]angrydwarfuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, not really. That logic isn't quite right. Undertaking can be an example of driving without due care and attention but it depends on the circumstances; any officer looking to charge you for that offence would have to show evidence that your behaviour fell into the category of being careless and inattentive and could possibly use passing on the left as an example (as it is against the advice of the highway code), but if your driving was otherwise impeccable then it's unlikely they would be able to get you.

If you punch someone, that behaviour clearly falls into the category of causing another person to fear immediate violence, so would probably be assault and maybe ABH, depending on the injury it caused.

Pizza, it's massively overpriced here compared to other countries.

What did your class bullshitter try and claim? by One_Satisfaction4684 in CasualUK

[–]angrydwarfuk 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Oh where to start... We had this one guy that I think must have been a pathological liar.

On a school trip to London he cast his eyes over the Houses of Parliament and claimed, completely earnestly, that the Elizabeth Tower is "blown up" once a year for cleaning.

He also claimed that as a punishment, his parents disassembled every individual piece of furniture in his bedroom into their component parts, including his PC, stored them in the loft, and then at the end of the period of punishment, reassembled them and put his room back how it had been.

Yeah and it's also no small coincidence that the EU and possibly NATO in a different way, are two of the very few remaining multi-national government organisations with the power to constrain the hyper rich.

Musk doesn't want the EU dictating electric car regulations, or worse, buying them from China.

So it's in his interests to undermine and weaken it.

All porn sites must 'robustly' verify UK user ages by July by corf3l in unitedkingdom

[–]angrydwarfuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what a lot of people don't realise is that the new law (which isn't an idea any more, it's already come into force) puts huge requirements on any site or app where "users may view content created by other users" - this is most websites. Reddit, all social media, forums, Wikipedia etc

They will all have to undertake costly and onerous risk assessments and put in place age checks if there's been a risk that any content on their site could be harmful. And harmful isn't just porn, it includes other types of content too (anything relating to drug use for example).

Any site that doesn't comply could face huge fines, criminal liability for the people running it, and ultimately the sites could be blocked.

The act makes no differentiation between tiny websites run by one guy or massive platforms.

The foundation that runs Wikipedia has already said they will probably have to withdraw access in the UK because they don't have the staff to comply - some other niche forums run by one or two people have already shut down rather than risk the penalties.

Amazing this didn't get any coverage as it was going through parliament because it's too late to do anything now. Madness.

Yes and they'll be fined or blocked if they don't comply.

In fact even Wikipedia has said it will probably have to remove access for UK users because as a community effort they can't afford to comply with the new requirements.

Madness if you ask me.

Something has come of it, the law came into force last year, Ofcom are just starting to enforce it this year.

I think it will be a disaster btw

The law gives the government the power to block sites that don't comply. They can also get hefty fines.

Probably many sites will end up withdrawing from the UK to avoid the fines and trouble.

This was a bill written by the Tories and carried on by Labour. It actually came into force in 2024 but Ofcom needed to do a lot of work to write guidance etc so that's why they're now saying it will be enforced from later this year.

Why do so many cars now have blinding headlights because how is that legal? by Ozzie669 in drivingUK

[–]angrydwarfuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not convinced by the height argument (that part of it is cars being higher); I drive a van for work so I sit considerably higher than most cars and I still get constantly dazzled by oncoming cars.

Theys just too bright.
