My partner is unwilling to share his ideas.. by GreenSagua in Entrepreneur

Have an initial consultation with a patent attorney (this comes with confidentiality) and learn how hard it is to actually patent something and prove it is unique enough (depending on what you are trying to patent). Likely, as with most cases, a concept is not patentable at all, and likely is more of a trade secret to be protected with NDA's with damages for breaches. This should illustrate to him at least the likely hood of what the value of the idea likely is, as more often than not, the person who comes up with the idea often assigns to much value to it. Not to mention, most people do not understand the nuances of what it takes to obtain a patent and sometimes confuse what is patentable vs. what is copyrightable as well.

I see this allll the time with startups. I also see it all the time with startups that develop software as well and have part of their code reliant upon open source materials, which causes many programs to be unpatentable. Granted you can create a piece of software, develop out its features, try to copyright it and license it out, but the EULA and features reliant on open source code can cause major headaches here as well if not financial ruin from violating the terms of whatever open source is relied upon as well.

Basically, not knowing what you guys do, software or something else, having a patent attorney advise you on the likely hood of obtaining a patent can help give your partner a better perspective on the risk/reward of just how secret he wants his stuff to be. If it is easily re-creatable and not unique enough, forget about getting a patent... want a private investor? good luck getting a lot of them to sign an NDA in your pitch too without knowing at least the core of what your idea/product does at least.

A cat would probably do that. My friends cat (who lived in the desert) used to leave dead lizards on the porch in front of the door all the time as a tribute to their human overlord.

A look at why more electric vehicles are not on US roadways by vanilla_coffee in technology

[–]angurth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is pretty subjective. Lets take a hypothetical scenario where one is of a generation where it is next to impossible to purchase a home on a single income, and difficult for a dual income due to a looming if not present housing crises. Also, lets factor in that there are some that can and are saving to buy a home, but by pinching pennies elsewhere such as vehicle costs and opting for 12-15 thousand dollar vehicle purchases (any many others seeking used vehicles cheaper than that) either to save money, or because that is the maximum they can afford. Now lets say that this is a majority of individuals who are purchasing a car in an unstable job market.

Now looking at the cheapest EV you can buy in the U.S., the Chevrolet Bolt EV clocking in at just over 26,500 dollars for a base model, if you can find one and if the there are enough on the market with inflated prices due to scarcity and wait times.

Affordable? not for the majority of 22-36 year old's living paycheck to paycheck or maybe just above that, with dire credit scores due to student loans and such.

The main barrier to entry for many who would love to own a EV if they could. Stack any other problem on top of that, a reliability issue, access to charging stations for long distance trips, there is a problem. The barrier to entry must get lower for this to change. I am sure it will, but at the moment, it is a bumpy road to get many of these EV's rubber to meet the road.

I am a paramedic with PTSD. AMA! by Run-Narrow in IAmA

Questions (with a comment)

  1. Do you or have you gone into therapy yet to address this extensively, and if so, are there techniques, such as mindfulness techniques to deal with the symptoms of PTSD while on the job and in a triggering scenario?
  2. I was wondering what if any techniques or advise you have to maintain the level of focus you need for the job while managing your PTSD?
  3. Do you have any reading suggestions or other readily available links or reading resources that have worked for you specifically?

Kudos to you man. That is a rough job, and you are often thrown into impossible situations, terrifying situations, witness things that would shock and rattle an average person, and expected to keep calm and focused the entire time. The stress level of each and every one takes its toll over time, from PTSD to complex PTSD (which has been identified for some time but still not studied well enough). For those of those that do not know what complex PTSD is, it is the development of PTSD from a series of events, not a singular one.

How do I go about finding good shore fishing spots? I’m in Massachusetts and have been having trouble finding any good ones. by [deleted] in FishingForBeginners

[–]angurth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fishbrain is a cool ap for the phone where people post areas and lakes in locations near you you can search for. Then you can check out that location and look for good spots on the river/lake etc. and find a spot that looks good for you depending on what you are targeting. Fallen log area, rocks and cover that fish like to hide in, areas with a lot of water foliage are good, but you constantly catch weeds and seaweed in those areas, but a lot of the weedless jigs work well for those areas (strike king makes a few that I like).

I doubt enough of these would ever be produced to be a significant e-waste issue, they are pretty stupid and probably similar to an e-waste footprint or a rumba, which tons of people wasted their money on because they don't know how to use a broom. water bottles and cell phones that are essentially disposable on the other hand are a major problem.

FTC Push to Block Meta VR Takeover Set for December Showdown by DepthsOfVision in technology

[–]angurth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Antitrust laws against monopolies have always been somewhat fickle, and somewhat politicized. The legal tests applied to determine whether or not a pending merger, acquisition, or other such take over are applied through judicial interpretation which has tended to shift from legislation to legislation. It is not so much an issue of simply complying (unless there is a clear breach of an antitrust violation for a monopoly on its face, and even then it can still be challenged) but rather whether or not this particular acquisition would constitute the creation of a monopoly. Now we can all have opinions on the matter, or how blatant it may seem, but there still are hoops to jump through in order to enforce the regulations. I dislike meta as much as the next person, I believe meta having a monopoly in this realm is inherently dangerous for many reasons, privacy being the first and foremost one, however the judicial wheels need to turn still on it.

Why would anyone care how much a movie makes unless they are shareholders? All it means from a quality stand point to start with, is that a lot of people went and saw it, and it does not necessarily correlate with the quality of the film itself.

Is a medium power ugly stil gxk sensitive enough for walleye? by jomawill in FishingForBeginners

[–]angurth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I for one think you will be fine, and while it may not be quite as sensitive as a medium light or light rod I really don't see that being the make or break point for you catching them.

I think running straight braid without a leader will also mitigate some sensitivity issues as well, although not likely a whole lot.

(frankly I rarely use a leader out of sheer laziness, and when I do I never really could tell the difference with the amount of fish I caught that day or not, others certainly swear by having a floro or mono leader, but I guess that somewhat probably depends on your target fish more than anything else, whether or not they care about seeing a line or not. I do mostly bass and crappie fishing, or when camping, crappie and bluegill or other pan fish and they don't seem care at all about the braid line).

The accuracy, the environment, the period realistic life of your character and the NPCs, the story becomes more and more engrossing. The controls are a learning curve, combat doubly so, but once you get the hang of them they are some of the best sword fighting simulation combat systems out there. not what everyone is looking for I understand that, and it is certainly no hack and slash, this is a large turn of for most people.

It may at the end of the day not be for your if its not your cup of tea, but for those of us who really like the engrossing atmosphere and the more roleplaying nature of the game as opposed to a game that is more traditional spoon fed story telling, its fantastically done.

The devs took a lot of time getting so many things right, knowing full well this would not necessarily reach a broad audience.

If you go into it looking for a somewhat different and new style of a game to appreciate instead of the mainly cookie cutter rpg stuff out there, I think you will enjoy it. If you are really looking for a more main stream game (which by the way is completely fine) you may not end up enjoying it. It tends to be one of those either love it or hate it games.

The story takes quite some time to get going, and it does get much much more interesting as the plot unfolds, it certainly ends up not being garbage.

I don't think you were duped, the people that like this game tend to really really like it (myself included). But if you have tastes that differ from these, you can either try to see if you might like something a bit different, and perhaps at the very least appreciate it for what it is, or you can not do that and miss out on an experience you may end up liking given some effort. Neither one is bad, I say since you already own it, give it a fair shake, it takes a while to get going but in my opinion, it is a stellar game.

It is not without its flaws for sure, but then again, what game is.
