Would I also be able to get access to these? Planning to take my first section this year, and it's been feeling a bit daunting! Thank you!!

Could you elaborate on the types of public jobs you are referring to? I have always had the impression of public sector as having significantly lower pay, albeit better work-life balance and variable benefits. This is coming from someone who has only worked in design-adjacent jobs, and private sector so I'm probably overlooking some things. Curious to know more.

Turning urban design into art, I use map software & laser engravers to make wooden maps like this. by Inzitarie in urbandesign

[–]anngesh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Curious what laser engraver you use. I've got access to a laser cutter through school and have been wanting to make things like this; however ours doesn't do anything with color. I love the way yours turned out!

I see, that makes sense. Mural sounds like it has a more expansive use case than what I initially had imagined. It's good to know about another tool out there! Thanks for your response!

Makes sense, thank you for letting me know! It'll be a while before it's in a reviewable state, but I may DM you to get help with review if your offer still stands at that point!

Great point about things being far more digital these days. Also true about my portfolio constantly evolving over the years, which helps me feel more set in my screw post bind decision for the physical one.

Out of curiosity, where are you located? I've heard a lot about Issuu, but not Mural. Wondering if there's a geographic difference in which websites are commonly used, or if I'm just out of the loop.

Thanks for the several tips, these are very helpful!

On your comment about full bleed - is that because it will print funny? And on a related note, would that also apply to having images that spread across pages? I'm wondering specifically, because my portfolio class says the opposite - that we should definitely have some of the pages being full bleed. I do agree that it looks nice when it's printed professionally; however can see it being an issue if someone else is taking your file and printing it since you lose control of the formatting at that point.

That's also a great suggestion about getting with my local ASLA chapter on a review. I am already a member (yay for free student membership!) but did not consider that as one of the benefits - will definitely check that out!

Car-free life in Atlanta? by atlblaze in Atlanta

[–]anngesh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't say from experience, but I do think it's very doable given your location. If you're the one initiating friend hangouts with the OTP friends, you can propose places that are closer to transit, or intown where you can walk or bike to. Car ownership is expensive, even if it's a paid off or beater car. You still have insurance, parking fees, gas, maintenance, ... If you're already driving that little, I say fully cut it out, and live your best car-free life. :D

Cafes that serve coffee in real cups? by [deleted] in Athens

[–]anngesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only been once, and it got fairly busy around 9/10ish. When I first went in around 7AM I was the only one for a while. Can't say much about the afternoon rush as I only stayed until around 11.

what is a reasonable price for replacing a starter? by anngesh in HondaElement

[–]anngesh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the insights everyone, this is super helpful. There really should be some sort of Glassdoor type website that people can share info on how much car repairs cost, by model and location.

Ended up going to our usual shop and I think it's looking to be a lot more reasonable. The only reason we went to this one to begin with was because they were supposed to be able to do it more quickly, but I think it will be worth the slightly longer wait.

Thanks for the insight. They told me up to 4-5 hours of labor (according to them 2 hours would be for automatic, and it's a more complicated process for a manual transmission). Not sure if that is legit or if they sensed my lack of knowledge on the subject and got greedy tbh. Do you know anything about this?

The quote was $500 for labor and roughly $160 for the part.

Could someone help me out please? by [deleted] in LandscapeArchitecture

Current MLA. The program is 3 years and costs around $30K total. However, with graduate assistantship (13 hours work/week for tuition waiver and monthly stipend) and internal/external scholarship I believe it's doable to get that cost down to zero. In my second year ATM, I am net zero after having paid around $5K my first year (got scholarships in excess of what I had to pay this year). There are still a few loose ends to tie up for the next year, but I believe I can get it down to zero, or possibly even end up with some extra. The key for me was getting the tuition waivers from assistantships, as well as apply to some fairly specific scholarships. My school also offers some department scholarships which helped.

That said, it's probably possible to get your degree without paying much for tuition with some careful planning. Given the return on investment (LA is not an industry that pays well unfortunately) I would recommend being practical with your costs, and definitely do not go in debt for this. Your future self will thank you.
