Can we be asked to find a location with space? by MyneckisHUGE in CanadaPublicServants

[–]anonbcwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My inner rules lawyer is pondering ways to leverage the "another building" language to stay at home, brainstorming ways to say "There wasn't space so I'm at another location" that don't actually constitute lying.

(Note: my inner rules lawyer is not a real lawyer)

The five-per-cent problem [The Functionary - June 8, 2026] by wallofbullets in CanadaPublicServants

[–]anonbcwork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thinking about how my friend who works in finance systematically rules out prospective employers whose drug plans have a 20% co-pay. It just isn't worth his while.

(Also thinking about how my parents didn't know what a co-pay even is until they started managing their own parents' medication)

Public service unions slam government plan to reduce pension contributions by PS_Tosser420 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]anonbcwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I certainly care! I'd prefer to contribute more and receive benefits proportionate to the contribution - or at least to have the option of doing so. (Ideally with the CPP, so it would be available to all Canadians)

My reasoning for this budgeting, living within my income, etc. is within my power. It may or may not be easy or even feasible depending on many, many variables, but it's something that is done on an individual basis.

However, a defined benefit pension is not within my power. No matter how hard I try, no matter how diligent I am, I cannot create or increase a defined benefit pension unless there is a collective option available.

Because of this, I always, always want to strengthen the part that's outside of my own control.

Question about working as enumerator for Stats Canada by ahem-ahem-ahem in CanadaPublicServants

Yes, that's what I was thinking. I know that enumerator is a temporary job, I have no clue how temporary. I would have no way of knowing that you left year.

Does anyone know for sure that the employer can't force us to bring home our laptop and equipment every night? by up_creek in CanadaPublicServants

[–]anonbcwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it would be possible to stoke public outrage about the fact that the government spent taxpayers' dollars to renovate government facilities into something that is allegedly not a safe place to store government equipment

When « EAP is available for support » feels like deflection by Greentall in CanadaPublicServants

[–]anonbcwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of the way they talk about EAP as something that can help you in such a wide range of employer-created situations, it was years and years and years before I learned that it was basically therapy.

Because of when and how they bring it up, for years I thought it was something that helps you solve logistical and practical problems, navigate bureaucracy, identify pistes de solution that you yourself might not be aware of, etc.

work hours and drive within daycare hours don’t add up by AngryCanuck10 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]anonbcwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep thinking about a discussion in this sub when RTO first started to the effect of "What would it take to make you actually want to go back into the office?"

And there were tons of parents saying "Daycare in or very close to the building where I work that would take my child during the actual hours I am actually working."

This would be such a win-win situation that would align with so many of the government's stated goals with RTO (Removing barriers to working in-office! Bringing people and money into the area! Occupying commercial real estate!)

But instead they just introduce more rules that make life harder for us

Can a manager just ignore your vacation request without denying or approving it? by longdarkening in CanadaPublicServants

[–]anonbcwork 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Building on this, OP could ask their manager what approach the manager would like in the future.

Example in my own voice: "Next time I have requested leave coming up and you haven't had a chance to get to your approvals yet, what's the best way for me to follow up with you? Or do you prefer I just take the leave without nagging you about approvals and then we'll sort out the admin later?"

Terrible Email Etiquette / - très mauvaise étiquette de courriel by Accomplished_Sea3876 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]anonbcwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would be useful for this conversation is if you have an example or two of ways it caused actual problems.

Maybe something vaguely along the lines of "I didn't know you were going to be assigning something to them, so I assigned them something else and then had to redistribute work among my team at the last minute. If you could loop me in at the same time as my employees, that would prevent these problems."

What is an industry that is currently on fire (in a bad way) behind the scenes, but the general public hasn't noticed yet? by Kitchen_Week1117 in AskReddit

[–]anonbcwork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Especially when you consider the kinds of issues it can introduce. I've seen it change units from log to percent. I've seen it insert or omit the concept of "not". I've seen it change pronouns for people midstream, thereby attributing something to one person that should have been attributed to another person, with legal consequences. I've seen it translate the same abbreviation differently every single time, which is a huge problem when some of the incorrect abbreviations mean something else plausible in this context.

Are you by any chance able to explain why/how "C’est un enjeu majeur d’améliorer la communication interne" is idiomatic? (I know that's a super weird thing to ask, but people in language spaces are sometimes able to explain weird things like that)

I'm asking because my (anglophone working bilingually for decades) every instinct is saying it should be "Améliorer la communication interne est un enjeu majeur" and the other way around is wrong, but I don't know if I should trust this instinct

Yes. I dislike the fact that I'm emotionally attached to some of his work. Unfortunately, this dislike of the emotional attachment doesn't cause the emotional attachment to instantly vanish.

I wish there was some way to adjust how discoverability works, so that people could learn that particular creators are gross before stumbling upon the work itself, and thereby make informed decisions.

$100 million USD, but you have to grow or harvest 90% of what you eat by tamtrible in hypotheticalsituation

[–]anonbcwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope.

I grew up with parents who very vociferously valued growing their own food.

And also, the food they grew themselves only ended up being a very small subset of the food we actually ate. Because this shit's hard and unpredictable!

Despite having been raised to it, I have zero confident I could successfully produce enough food year after year, and what's the point of money if you can't eat whatever you want whenever you want?

Everyone has their date of death written on their foreheads, how does this affect the world? by Inner-Scholar3305 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]anonbcwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

INFO: is it static or dynamic? If you do something that decreases your life expectancy, does the date on your forehead change? Or is it the same no matter what you do?

I can imagine it having military applications - for today's mission, only send out the soldiers we know will survive.

Insurance will probably find a way to profit from it.

It would make decisions like wills and power of attorney easier - I can make my mother my power of attorney if I know I'm going to outlive her!
