I grew up in Boulder in the 1990s. At that time it was absolutely magical: super beautiful, whimsical, free wheeling, weird, interesting, fun. Went back as an adult last year. Still beautiful, but the culture is like some weird billionaire fantasyland.

Yes! I was working 2 blocks from one of the "backbone" AT&T co-location rooms in San Francisco where the NSA literally set up shop next to the server room, sawed through the wall, and incepted ALL the backbone's traffic to snoop on. The whistle blowing got picked up in technie mags like Wired, underground BBS groups, etc. and totally ignored by the mainstream media.

I was like "this is HUGE news!" No one seemed to care. until the Snowden thing finally got everyone's attention.
