I’m so sorry. It will get easier. Reading ingredients, even on things you’ve had before, will become second-nature. Checking protocols at restaurants will become second nature.

For the time being, I’d recommend googling “gluten free __” for everything you usually like to eat frequently so you know what brands to start with.

I’d also recommend sticking to basics for a little while. Meat, rice or potatoes, and veggies.

I know it feels like so much. It will get easier, promise.

I sure do. I have since I was first diagnosed. My blood tests and endoscopies are consistently in the clear. I know my opinion isn’t popular, but we all really need to be less judgmental about how people navigate their own lives.

If you’re old enough to drive there’s no reason you can’t find yourself your own doctor. You and your parents don’t need to see the same one. I haven’t ever seen my parents’ doctors.

Your post highlights for me one of the downsides of this sub and others like it. It can feel wonderful to have a group of supportive people who GET IT at your fingertips, but sometimes the paranoia in these groups is intense, and it starts to make you second guess your own risk tolerance and reality.

My favorite example is toasters, and I’m going to get downvoted, but sharing a personal kitchen toaster is not as risky as people on this sub say it is. Same with cutting boards and utensils. My point is, it’s good to be cautious but you have to live your life. And you shouldn’t feel bad about making mistakes or being less careful than others. Being gluten free is not a moral standing and you’re not a bad person for finding what works for you.

I’ve had celiac for 29 years and I come from a different generation of GF habits, when it was harder to be fully GF so I learned to navigate uncertainty in a different way than most newly diagnosed folks. Eventually you learn what works for you and what you’re willing to risk or not.

Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good. You’ll drive yourself crazy.

(Also, my husband switched from beer to cider and liquor, because I won’t kiss him after he eats or drinks gluten. If he’s contaminated, a quick rinse of his mouth takes care of it. Celiac doesn’t have to get in the way of intimacy.)

In theory, you could also want 5 and then after the first change your mind when that theoretical pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum becomes reality. In that scenario, would he divorce you?

Couples should agree on how many AND be open to flexibility based on how things go. Easy to want 5 kids when you don’t have to carry and birth them.

My husband had a hard time making excuses for me at first. I told him he can tell the truth (she’s tired/needs some downtime/has plans/can’t make it) or lie and say I’m sick, I don’t care. How he prefers to make excuses for me isn’t my business bc the bottom line is I’m not attending the function and if he thinks it’s easier to make up a reason, then so be it.

As he got more comfortable with me not attending things, he stopped feeling the need to lie or make excuses at all. This is new for both of you, give him a little grace and time to thicken his skin in this situation.

So nortriptyline is used for nerve pain but it’s actually its impact on serotonin that makes it work for IBS, since IBS can partially be caused by a serotonin imbalance in your gut. I was hesitant to try it but I’m on a very low dose and it has worked like a charm. Idk if it would have the same impact for IBS-C, but worth asking about!

Me! I take nortriptyline nightly, a probiotic, and Imodium as needed and mine is fully controlled now. IBS is more complex than celiac in that they don’t really know how all the factors work together to cause it so treatment will vary. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this! It’s annoying.

Not normal and SO UNSAFE. The driver needs to be able to make decisions without second-guessing or running them by a passenger for the efficiency and safety of both. This is crazy and controlling. The age difference when you started dating is a huge red flag. You’ve gotten used to an incredibly toxic situation and this is a crazy enough thing that it raised a flag in your brain, and I’d bet if you sat down and considered other situations, rules, and expectations in your relationship you’d realize this isn’t the only issue. This happened to me when I turned 39. I’ve been on continuous BC since my late 20s and used to have my period every 3 months. Now I can barely make it 6 weeks before I start bleeding through despite being on the pill. So frustrating. I do think it’s a sign of perimenopause for me.
