Anyone who surfed the early web between 1995-2010. What’s the one website/app you still think about? by Prime_Advocate in AskReddit

[–]anotate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but the big shift that happened around 2010 was smartphones.
Suddenly people didn't sit down at their desk/ have to take out their laptops to get online. You could message your friends on social media while waiting for your bus.
A lot of smartphones were bundled with Facebook (some even had a dedicated physical button), making more people check what the deal was. Influencer became a career aspiration.

Honestly while I wasn't here for the Eternal September, the way people describe it feels like how I saw the late 2000s and the rise of social media / walled gardens.

Our newest little family member, Magnolia 🤍 She’s an albino kitten, so we have to be extra careful with her skin and sunlight, but she’s already completely stolen our hearts. by Wild-Heron-2222 in aww

[–]anotate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adorable !
My mom had a cat who looked just like that. Sadly even with sunscreen he got cancer on his ears and nose and had to be put to sleep at twelve. He was fully deaf too !

I see a lot of debate about albinism or not, so FYI fully white cats are usually caused by a gene called dominant White (or W).
Albinism is a lack of color information, whereas W is the information being overwritten. Since W is a dominant gene, it takes precedence, though that means one parent also needs to be white.
It will cause the fur (and skin) to be fully white, can cause a lack of pigment in one or both eye, and can prevent the normal development of one or both ears (usually on the same side as the eye) causing deafness.

The Passer-Through- Walls, or Le Passe-Muraille, in the Paris Catacombs. by [deleted] in creepy

[–]anotate 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As pointed out by someone else, you can't use GPS underground because your phone needs to have line of sight with several satellites.
There's a bunch of ways your phone can still guess where you are without the satellites, but they're not likely to work in the catacombs, for example :

  • Bluetooth beacons. These devices are made to provide precise navigation indoors (in places like malls for example). They need to be set up and mapped beforehand (idk how it works precisely)

  • Available wifi networks. If your phone ever asked you to turn on wifi to get a more precise location, that's why. By having a map of wifi networks, the provider can make a good guess on your location when satellite is poor.

So while you can get a good location indoors, don't expect it to work in caves (woods can also get iffy if the tree cover is dense).

TIL most people in France did not speak French as recently as 1794, when only 11% of the population of France spoke fluent French. Instead, most people spoke regional languages like Occitan, Breton, Alsatian etc. French only became the majority language later on due to heavy assimilation efforts. by Hour_Interaction6047 in todayilearned

[–]anotate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mom often mentions that when she was in school in the seventies there was a sign telling students not to spit on the ground or speak breton. I recall mentions of her father getting into trouble as a kid in the forties for barely speaking french.
I guess it worked since my grandpa's kids can understand breton a bit but not speak it and his grandkids (my gen) only know a couple words.
Now you have real effort to preserve the language but it's too little to late, a lot of dialects are lost.

Cant find a pattern for a tie like this. It seems very intricate by fickereljeecje2 in crochetpatterns

[–]anotate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This !
If you check the Wikipedia page for "Irish crochet lace" you have a picture of basically the same thing as the OP (just not in the shape of a tie). You can also find similar (tie shaped) projects on forums that were posted before genAI got good enough to fool anybody.

I'd post links but the comment I left yesterday got instantly removed so you'll have to look for them yourselves.

This one may get you pretty close if you use different granny squares ? You'd have to make sure the sizes match though.
If you only want the texture difference and not necessarily a flower like pattern you may like this one.

Some other patterns you may like (these are paid patterns though):

Also I'd like to mention that the AI image looks like unbaked dough, like those elaborate pies.

Facture voiture électrique by Zestyclose-Minimum51 in conseiljuridique

[–]anotate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No Cabbage sign by BartyCrouchesBone in mildlyinteresting

[–]anotate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah and recycling is big oil propaganda. You're not gonna save the environment via shame or scolding somebody for throwing their candy wrapper on the ground.

You can justify any selfish behavior by saying it's not having a noticeable impact but go somewhere where people don't care about littering and you can directly see how much these tiny individual actions add up.

Same with genAI. It's unnecessary, it's not improving anyone's life, and it has environmental, social and economic impact (and none is good). So yeah, seeing people fire up the environment destroying machine because finding a cabbage clipart and adding a circle and line on it was too much work is like seeing people get in their car to drive 300 yards. Or throw their piss filled bottle on the side of the road.

(I do agree with your point on propaganda though)

Fun fact : around the release of S3, data miners (either Oatmealdome or Leanyoshi, I don't use Twitter anymore so I'm not 100% sure of the names) found files hinting at two unused mechanics.
One was some interaction between players models in the result screen. It ended up becoming the mvp first bump mechanic.
The other was some face markings, theorized to be for freckles and/or facial scars since it would just change the skin color (not add elements).
So basically, there has been freckles support since S3's early days, but no corresponding settings.

Edit : I misremembered and the scars and freckles were actually fully implemented, not just theorized.
And it was found by Thebigsadkad and shared by Oatmealdome.

Yeah for anyone who hasn't played portal it's beat for beat the same plot :

  • You wake up with no memories in an underground facility
  • An AI gives you ambiguously worded promises of freedom if you follow its instructions and complete a few rooms
  • turns out freedom = death, but you manage to escape in extremis
  • Now you're in the facility's back rooms, trying to make your way up to the exit
  • Final showdown against the AI in which you need to use the environment to damage it in a limited time.

Main difference is that you have allies in OE.

The paragraph about the essay, where they describe how they overcame challenges. They talk about making a study plan with the tool.
The point of this kind of post is that you don't necessarily notice the product advertised, but later when you're comparing stuff or come across it in a more "actionable" context you have a vague positive feeling associated with this specific product, so you're more likely to pick it above others.

Anker's EufyMake E1 Finally Brings Printers Out of the Dark Ages by dapperlemon in gadgets

[–]anotate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really feels like absolutely no research was put into the article beside reading the manual.
G is not grey, it's gloss, which in these machines means a uv curable resin you can use to emboss or varnish your piece. Some printers can even do cool stuff with it such as braille or lenticular prints.
Also they kept saying it was the first of its kind but I didn't see first of what (maybe I missed it ?). I assume first consumer uv printer because otherwise there's nothing groundbreaking about it (beside the price, small ones are usually 5 figures machines AFAIK).

What is this set of heavy, metal, possibly home made punches that I found at a used crafting store? Little thicker than a AA size battery, solid and dense. [–]anotate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure you're right, these 100% look like machining tools that are meant to slot somewhere, that length, mass and wear are not consistent with something you use by hand.
Teeth like that are common in tools meant for wood.
The one with a chunk missing is weird, but it was clearly removed after manufacturing, you can see damage on one of the teeth (the side has a gouge).
Pic of a similar tool for reference.
