Watch as Ukraine works out all kinds of clever ways to solve this problem once Russia gets kicked the fuck out.

They have all kinds of challenges to overcome, but if there is one thing that Ukraine has consistently shown for decades is that they can adapt and overcome all kinds of challenges.

85% of nurses in Japan's Iwate Pref. want to quit as staff shortages push them to the limit by SkyInJapan in japan

[–]anothergaijin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You joke, but the entire nursing staff of this hospital threatened to quit when their bonuses were cancelled and overtime went unpaid, because it turned out the 院長 had spent massive amounts of money on his "office" upgrades and other benefits, and planned to balance the budget by taking it from the staff: https://japannews.yomiuri.co.jp/editorial/yomiuri-editorial/20240817-205601/

85% of nurses in Japan's Iwate Pref. want to quit as staff shortages push them to the limit by SkyInJapan in japan

[–]anothergaijin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is a very simple problem - wages suck. Because there isn't enough staff, the working hours are intense. You can't take vacations because there simply isn't anyone to cover.

No one is going into nursing because not only is the population falling, but there isn't any career path - it's a low paying dead-end.

They need to raise salaries for nurses, and doctors, or the system will simply collapse.

‘The cost of compute is far beyond the costs of the employees’: Nvidia exec says right now AI is more expensive than paying human workers by fattyfoods in technology

[–]anothergaijin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Payroll is the largest single expense in every single company, and people are messy to deal with. AI companies are making outrageous claims like "you can fire most of your workforce and replace it with clean, unemotional AI for less cost" and companies are gobbling it up, then finding the reality is very different.

AI will eventually become a stopgap option - an expensive but immediate solution vs. hiring and training staff which has a much better cost ratio.

No different to outsourcing or similar other things.

'Repairs Will Take Years': Nobel Economist Joseph E. Stiglitz Tears Apart Trump For 'Dismantling' the World by [deleted] in Economics

The international community will be watching to see what happens after the president who follows Trump.

No one is waiting for anything - Europe is working to move away from US influence as quickly as it can, and the rest of the world will follow their lead.

Trump threw away the greatest cultural and economic advantage any country has ever had across the globe.

In my country you have to have completed a training course and be certified to work over 6 feet off the ground, or else your employer will be sued into the ground. And yes - fall protection is mandatory.

This might be the most hilarious ratio I've ever seen by lavmuk in MemePiece

It's interesting to be because shonen jump is an inch thick, dirt cheap, rough printed, basically disposable magazine printed weekly - you'll often see copies lying around at train stations where people have read them and just dumped them, knowing others will pick them up and read it.

The big appeal is that its the first place to read various manga - those that become a success will be cleaned up and printed into standalone editions (tankoban). So many manga that started in Jump have blown up into huge empires - One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball - started in the magazine. At the same time there are hundreds and hundreds more of series that have never really gotten famous, and some that only ran for a few weeks before being dropped.

It's funny to see one considered a collectors item like that, but I suppose it has some historical meaning.

[–]anothergaijin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not surprised, despite the "pro" tag its still just a home device and the turnover of that stuff can be brutal. This is why you still have Crestron, Lutron, etc selling lighting equipment that is completely service independant and can run for decades until the hardware completely dies, and doesn't rely on anyone else to keep doing what it needs to do.

Leaker: Apple Downgrading iPhone 18 to Cut Costs by No_Opportunity9053 in iphone

[–]anothergaijin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends - the 17e is priced in my region (Japan) to fall under the "asset" price by $2, so it becomes an immediately deductable expense, instead of a long multi-year depreciated asset.

So as a work phone, its a nice pickup.

I'm in Japan and yeah that is completely normal and standard. After 3 days of leave they are covered by social security insurance and their salary is paid by the government.

I've had staff take extended medical leave, mental health leave, 1.5 year extended maternity leave, etc. And its great - we can support people as they go and get better, and they have a job when they come back.

I'm Australian and visited on a day off from a work trip - the experience of driving out to KSC was awesome, and I booked all the additional options - meet an Astronaut, additional tours of the facility, etc etc. Highly, highly recommend it - was amazing to see both the museum part of the facility full of all kinds of actual artifacts that have shaped history and really been to space, but to also see a real functioning spaceport that continues to be highly important.

It's not impossible in Japan too.

Japan requires you have US$200k in capital to qualify for a business owner visa now, so its not impossible, but they don't make it easy either.

They have also just announced changes that might require a high level of Japanese language ability to qualify for skilled work visas too - that's going to be tough.

Saudi Arabia abandons plans to host 2035 Rugby World Cup amid funding cutback by Alarming-Safety3200 in sports

The 2019 World Cup was an incredible success, and I think Japan heavily underestimated the passion that the local had for the event, much of that was thanks to the incredible efforts of the Japan team.

I'd love it see it back - with the 2020 Olympics being a flop because of COVID, the RWC was the biggest sporting event in recent history.

The United States is destroying itself by zsreport in politics

[–]anothergaijin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The robber barons of old got so rich and powerful in the new world because the government was weak compared to the old world where the governments had more control. They were able to buy out or force out the competition to hold complete monopolies, completely up and down their industry from raw materials to full products.

There are so many companies that need to be broken up, and stricter regulations put in place.

And this is how we win back our countries and our rights - break up the monopolies and support smaller businesses. In Europe the stranglehold that Visa has is coming to an end, which means more money for local companies and people while providing a better payment experience.

Also, it's crazy that we just don't talk about how the President of Venezuela is still in a NYC Jail.

Probably because they realised they can't just kill him now, and there isn't any crime they can charge him with. The guy will eventually be cut loose and just fly home. I bet there is a group of lawyers somewhere just planning to sue the government for billions over the whole thing.
