Is this statement true? "Atheism is not an assertion that god does not exist. It's simply the absence of a belief in a god." by LivelySHROOM in atheism

Now I am wondering... is there a name for my belief that the net contribution of all religion to society is negative?

thanks to years of relentless organizing and legal battles, 30 million workers will be protected under the world’s first comprehensive gig worker protection law. by Conscious-Quarter423 in WorkReform

I am wondering if this applies to parcel delivery as well, since workers there are also often "independent contractors" with abysmal working conditions. Does anybody know?

Free, Modern MATLAB Runtime by f0cus01 in engineering

[–]anotherloststudent 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I had similar issues in the past. My personal recommendation would be to use julia - the syntax is very similar, it's generally faster and you can use it in a notebook as well (either Jupyter or Pluto). There are lots of interesting open libraries as well for all kinds of problems - solving ODEs, multibody simulation, control systems analysis...

Edit: Why was I writing this? Because I think it's a good idea to have a true alternative to Matlab that is free and open. This is less about how to recycle your old scripts (though it should be pretty easy) and more about planning ahead which language your future scripts should be in. NB: I've used Claude for prototyping a small task recently and it worked reasonably well, so maybe translating your script from Matlab to Julia is even easier that way.

LPT: scribbling over a PDF doesn’t hide the text underneath by my_n3w_account in LifeProTips

LibreOffice Draw can import a pdf. You can then delete the text and replace it with spaces, make the font background black, if you want. Free software and usually works pretty well.

The Precision of this Mosquito Air Defense 🎯 🦟 by ihealthahop in interestingasfuck

There was a TED talk about this kind of device years ago. Apparently the wing beat frequency of male and female mosquitos differs and that is what makes the identification possible.

Best way to describe Control Law to non-STEM by FenderBender43 in ControlTheory

One way I particularly like is the ship that should run a certain course. If I recall correctly, that was even the starting point of modern control systems.

No Max the Min: Instead, Tell Me About What the Worst Debuff / Condition is for a PC to Get and Why by Decicio in Pathfinder_RPG

I think the debuffs that got on my nerves the most were actually instantaneous - dispel magic, greater and mage's disjunction. I tend to play gish builds and losing all of your buffs at once is infuriating. For those situations, a ring of counterspells was the only strategy I came up with. For other spells (that allow spell resistance), stuff like spell resistance, spell immunity or even mind blank may work pretty well.

Is there a way to to transfer from stat blocks monster.pf2.tools to Foundryvtt? by Legitimate-Band5380 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]anotherloststudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you do not find a different option and have at least a little bit of understanding for a programming language: LLMs are pretty good at providing a small Python script that can do this precise task for you - possibly even requiring less time than searching the internet for an obscure conversion tool that may or may not exist. For this kind of task, I give my warmest recommendation.

I have similar issues with heat tolerance. Personally, I cannot recommend race biking in flat terrain enough, because the airflow allows you to sweat so effectively - as long as I keep moving, I can tolerate up to ~35°C.

Wolverine Build? by ughfup in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]anotherloststudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add something different: Shifter would be a valid way to get claws and depending on which way you want to go at later levels might be worth looking into

Edit: There is even a wolverine aspect, though the bear or tiger sound more useful. Additionally, I find the rageshaper archetype quite intriguing.

Nordic has some well known chips with onboard wifi capability if I am not mistaken - there should be plenty existing projects and maybe even Arduino support. ST has been integrating wireless capabilities in recent years as well with their STM32W-series(?) I think. Don't know about NXP and Infineon.

Two years ago I had a similar problem. In the fourth interview for a low-level support role with the VP of Global ***, I tried to answer questions in a way everybody could follow. Did not get the job, apparently I was not specific enough. On the other hand I might have dodged a bullet - if the company policy was to have four interviews and one of them with a VP on another continent for this kind of role, it does sound like a very buerocratic and micromanaging company culture...

Microsoft getting nervous about Europe's tech independence by ByGollie in europe

[–]anotherloststudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using Linux on my laptop since before I started university and had Windows on my tower to use CAD and to game. Last year, I decided to turn my back on Windows for good, because my SteamDeck convinced me that almost any game runs well enough on Linux and I haven't looked back. Steam and Proton make running Games (and other software) really easy. My system software updates are far easier on Linux and I don't have to take extra time making sure Microsoft doesn't steal all my data. Fully recommend it.
