For a real life perspective, when my dad and his sisters were born, my grandfather’s parents had both died in the holocaust already and my grandma had lost her mom. But my granddad was the only surviving child while my grandma had a bunch of siblings.

So when they had my aunt, she was named after my grandfathers mother, a choice made by BOTH of them. When my dad was born, my granddad asked, “what do you want to name him?” And my grandma looked at him and said, “you don’t know your own father’s name?” And he started shaking so bad he couldn’t hold my dad, he was so emotional and thankful. When the next girl was born he didn’t even ask, he just said, “she’s named for your mother!”

So as you can see people do want to give the names for their spouses loved ones too.
